What changed with YouTube Music lyrics
Historically, many users could view synced lyrics inside the YouTube Music player without paying extra. The current behavior (as seen in app prompts and lyric screens on multiple devices) indicates that lyrics access is now tied to a YouTube Premium subscription in more situations.

Who is affected and what you’ll notice
Most commonly, the affected users fall into one or more categories:
- Non-Premium accounts using YouTube Music on mobile or desktop.
- Free-tier accounts that previously had lyrics visible but now see a lock/prompt.
- Users traveling between regions (for example, a home subscription vs. a different catalog availability behavior).
What you’ll notice in the app is usually straightforward: the lyrics button doesn’t open, the lyrics panel shows a subscription message, or lyrics stop mid-song and are replaced by an upgrade screen.
How to confirm whether lyrics are locked on your account

- Open YouTube Music on your phone or tablet.

iPhone and iPad
Most iOS Premium subscriptions are managed through Apple’s subscription flow.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select YouTube Premium (or the YouTube subscription you want).
- Choose Start free trial (if available) or Subscribe and confirm.
After subscribing, fully close and reopen YouTube Music, then check the Lyrics panel again.
Android
On Android, subscription management typically happens through the Google Play Store.
- Open Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon (top right).
- Tap Payments & subscriptions.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select YouTube Premium and tap Subscribe or Upgrade.
- Confirm payment details when prompted.

Troubleshooting when you have Premium but lyrics still don’t show
It’s common for the UI to remain locked briefly, or for the app to be logged into the wrong account. Use the checklist below in order.
Check these account and subscription basics
- Confirm the logged-in account in YouTube Music: profile icon → check your email.
- Confirm Premium status in the YouTube app or on the web: sign in to youtube.com/premium and check whether you’re active.
- If you have multiple Google accounts, repeat the login check—lyrics gating is account-specific.
- Make sure you’re not on a work/school-managed profile if your device uses restricted accounts.
Update and reinstall steps by platform
Outdated apps can fail to recognize feature flags tied to membership.
- iOS/iPadOS: App Store → search YouTube Music → update.
- Android: Play Store → search YouTube Music → update.
- Desktop/web: hard refresh and sign out/in if needed.
If updates don’t help, reinstall the app, then sign in again. This forces the app to rebuild its local settings and feature access.
Cache, permissions, and app state fixes

- Fully close YouTube Music (remove it from the app switcher) and reopen it.

- Free trial vs. active membership: if you’re in a trial that ended, the app can still show cached lyric UI until it refreshes.
- Family plans: your household members may need to be explicitly included, and the YouTube Music app must be signed into the correct Google account.

- Open the song on YouTube.

This won’t guarantee synced lyrics for every track, but it can be enough for casual listening.
Search lyrics on the web
If your priority is reading lyrics (not necessarily syncing), use web sources that display the text. Search with the song title plus artist and the word lyrics.
- Use multiple sources if one looks incomplete.
- Be aware that some lyric sites can be noisy with ads or pop-ups.
Switch to a different music app
Other streaming services may provide lyrics inside the player (availability depends on track and licensing). If YouTube Music lyrics are a must-have, testing a competitor’s lyric feature can be the fastest workaround.

Use device-wide accessibility options (where supported)
