YouTube Music has started rolling out a new experience on artist pages: Samples. The goal is simple—help you preview an artist faster, without forcing you to hunt through tracks one by one.
If you’ve noticed a new “Samples” row or module on certain artist profiles, this guide explains what it likely is, how to use it on iPhone, iPad, Android, and desktop, and what to do when you don’t see it yet.

What are Samples on YouTube Music artist pages?
Samples on YouTube Music artist pages are a dedicated preview area that surfaces short, curated snippets or an easy-to-skim selection from the artist’s catalog. Instead of starting from a single “Popular” track, you get a more guided entry point for discovering songs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn practical terms, Samples usually appears as an additional module on an artist’s profile page. When you tap or click a sample item, YouTube Music begins playback or routes you to the related track/preview behavior depending on how the feature is configured for that artist.

Why YouTube Music added Samples
Artist pages are where intent is highest: you’re already interested enough to seek out the artist. Samples reduce friction by letting you preview multiple tracks quickly and make a decision sooner.
It also helps YouTube Music better match listeners to the right content earlier in the session—especially for discovery when “Popular” doesn’t tell the whole story.
What you can expect to see (and what you might not)
You might see Samples as a row near the top of an artist page, similar to how other modules (like popular tracks, albums, or related artists) appear. However, rollout tends to be gradual.

- Your app version hasn’t received the feature yet.
- You’re on a platform or region where the rollout is delayed.
- Your account is excluded from the test cohort.
- The artist’s page isn’t configured for the module (varies by catalog and rollout).
How to use Samples on an artist page
Use Samples like a quick preview carousel. You’re looking for a Samples module on the artist profile, then tapping/clicking a sample item to start playback or open the associated content.

On iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS)
Follow the steps below to locate the module and play a sample.
- Open the YouTube Music app.
- Search for an artist name and open their artist page.
- Scroll until you find the Samples row/module.
- Tap a sample item to start preview playback.
- Use the player controls to pause, skip (if available), or switch to full tracks from the playback screen.
On Android
The flow is similar on Android.
- Open the YouTube Music app on your Android device.
- Search for the artist and open their profile.
- Look for the Samples section on the page.
- Tap a sample to play the preview.
- If you want more context, use the “Up next”/queue behavior from the player or open the track/album page from playback.
On desktop (web browser)
On desktop, you typically interact with the same module via clicks.
- Go to YouTube Music in your browser.
- Search for an artist and open their artist page.
- Find the Samples row.
- Click a sample item to start playback.
- Use the on-page player controls or mini-player controls to manage playback and queue.
How Samples typically behave (playback, queueing, and links)
While the exact behavior can vary by device and experiment design, you can generally treat Samples like a preview entry point. Expect one of the following outcomes when you tap/click a sample:
- Playback starts immediately in the player.
- You’re routed to the associated track/preview page, where you can play the full content.
- The item adds to “Up next” or influences the upcoming queue depending on your player settings.
If you prefer uninterrupted full tracks, watch for UI hints like track titles and “play” icons tied to the sample items. If the preview feels too short, open the underlying track from the playback screen to continue into the full version.
Prerequisites and eligibility
You don’t need YouTube Premium to use YouTube Music’s core features, but feature rollouts can still vary. Samples availability is often tied to:

- App version: update the YouTube Music app to the newest release available for your platform.
- Platform: iOS/iPadOS, Android, and desktop may receive the module at different times.
- Account cohort: A/B tests and staged rollouts commonly affect whether you see the module.
- Artist page configuration: the feature may not appear for every artist immediately.
If you want a concrete starting point: update your app using the App Store or Google Play, then restart the app and check the artist page again.
Troubleshooting when Samples don’t show up
When Samples are missing, it’s usually one of four things: you’re not on the latest app version, the module hasn’t reached your region/cohort, the artist page isn’t eligible yet, or the app is caching stale UI.
Step-by-step checks
- Confirm you’re on the right artist page: open the artist’s profile directly (not a search result snippet).
- Update YouTube Music: check for the newest YouTube Music version in your app store.
- Restart the app: fully close and reopen YouTube Music, then re-check the artist page.
- Test a different artist: if Samples appear on one artist but not another, eligibility and rollout are likely the reason.
- Switch platforms: check the same artist on desktop or another device to confirm whether it’s account/device-specific.
- Log out and back in (if needed): this can force account sync, but only do it after the simpler checks.
Cache, permissions, and account factors
For mobile apps, clearing cache can help if the UI isn’t refreshing. On Android, you can also try clearing cache for YouTube Music (without uninstalling), then reopen the app and sign in again if prompted.
- Android: Settings > Apps > YouTube Music > Storage > Clear cache.
- iOS/iPadOS: there’s no direct “clear cache” button inside Settings; reinstalling the app can help, but it’s a heavier step.
- Desktop: hard refresh can resolve stale scripts (try Ctrl+F5 / Cmd+Shift+R).
If you’re using an ad blocker or aggressive privacy extension on desktop, disable it briefly to test whether it’s interfering with module rendering.
Privacy, copyright, and content expectations
Samples are designed to preview an artist’s work without requiring you to immediately commit to a full track. The content you see should reflect what’s available in the YouTube Music catalog for your account and region.

As with other music previews, remember that availability can vary by licensing agreements. If you can see Samples but a particular track won’t play, it’s often a rights/region availability issue rather than a client bug.
For artists and labels: what to verify
If you manage an artist page and you’re trying to understand whether Samples are “working,” treat it like a catalog/metadata verification exercise.
Catalog and metadata consistency
- Confirm the artist’s name and channel/artist profile mapping is correct.
- Check that major releases and tracks are properly attributed to the artist.
- Ensure album/track pages aren’t split across multiple near-duplicate artist profiles.
Release availability and regional differences
Some preview modules can reflect regional licensing. If a listener in one country sees Samples that appear different in another, it’s consistent with how music rights are usually handled across markets.

Start a radio from the artist
On many artist pages, YouTube Music offers a “radio” or similar autoplay mode. That can act as a substitute for previewing adjacent tracks quickly.
Search within YouTube Music
If the artist’s page is missing the module, use YouTube Music search for a specific era, album, or track name. From there, you can queue a short set of likely matches and refine based on what plays next.
Common questions (FAQ)
Will Samples work the same for every artist?
No. Rollouts and eligibility often vary. Some artists may show Samples sooner, while others appear later depending on configuration and staged testing.
Do Samples require YouTube Premium?
YouTube Premium isn’t strictly required for YouTube Music browsing, but playback and certain preview behaviors can vary by account type and licensing. If playback fails, check your plan status and region availability.
Why do I see Samples on desktop but not on mobile?
That usually points to platform-specific rollout timing or a mobile app version that hasn’t received the module yet. Update the app, restart it, and test a different artist to confirm whether it’s cohort-based.
What should I do if a sample item won’t play?
Try another sample item first, then hard refresh on desktop or restart the app on mobile. If multiple items fail for one artist, it could be a rights/availability issue for your region.
Bottom Line
YouTube Music adding Samples to artist pages is a practical shift toward faster discovery. If you see the Samples module, use it as your first stop for previewing tracks before you commit to full playback.
