There is no universal cheaper option. To compare a home server with a cloud VM for a 24/7 YouTube loop, measure the home machine’s average power draw at the wall, apply your own marginal electricity tariff, then compare that result with a current all-in VM quote for the exact configuration and location. Include the costs and practical trade-offs beyond electricity and compute: hardware, traffic, storage, VAT, maintenance, upload capacity, and recovery if the stream stops.
Calculate the home server’s monthly electricity cost
For an always-on machine, use 730 hours as a practical average-month estimate:

Monthly electricity cost (€) = average wall power (W) ÷ 1,000 × 730 × your marginal electricity price (€/kWh).
Use your own tariff rather than a generic German electricity figure. Your marginal price is the amount that applies to additional consumption; the relevant figure can depend on your contract and bill. No representative German household tariff or typical home-server power draw is established here, so a single euro estimate would be misleading.

Measure the whole setup, not the CPU specification
A server’s advertised processor TDP is not a measurement of what the complete machine draws in use. Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to measure the equipment at the wall, ideally over a representative period that includes the encoder and other hardware required to keep the stream running. Include the router or other equipment only if it is an incremental cost caused by this setup. The monitor is a measurement aid, not a substitute for your own reading.
Example using your own inputs
If your measured average is W watts and your marginal tariff is P euros per kilowatt-hour, calculate W ÷ 1,000 × 730 × P. Substitute your measured wattage and bill rate; do not treat an example based on someone else’s machine or tariff as a German average.
Build a complete monthly cloud VM figure
Do not compare home electricity with a provider’s advertised starting price. Obtain a current quote for the instance and German or other intended region you would actually use, then add every relevant charge. Cloud compute billing and purchase options vary: AWS lists On-Demand, Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, Spot, and Dedicated Hosts, while Hetzner describes monthly caps and hourly billing for shorter use. Hetzner says a cloud server remains billable while it exists.

Items to check in the quote
- The exact VM size, its current rate, and the purchase or billing model.
- Storage needed for the video files, operating system, and any working files.
- Included outbound traffic and the price or rule for traffic above the allowance.
- Public address charges, if applicable.
- VAT and whether the displayed price includes it.
- Backups, monitoring, or other services needed for your setup.
Hetzner announced updated cloud-server pricing for new orders and rescales from 15 June 2026. Older comparisons may therefore be stale. A current suitable Germany VM total, including all relevant charges, is not established here; check the provider’s live pricing and billing information before deciding.
Compare like with like

For an energy-versus-VM arithmetic break-even, compare the home electricity total with the VM’s complete monthly total. If electricity is lower, the home setup is cheaper on those two line items only. It does not establish that home is cheaper after hardware and maintenance, or that it offers better continuity. Add any incremental home costs before deciding.
Check that the stream can stay live
The cheaper host is not useful if it cannot sustain the chosen stream. YouTube’s official encoder guidance provides recommended bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate, recommends RTMPS, and advises testing upload bitrate. Check the current guidance for your chosen output settings rather than assuming one bitrate fits every video.

Home upload capacity
YouTube’s streaming tips say the stream bitrate should ideally be 20% below available upload bandwidth. Leave that headroom, and test the upload path under realistic conditions. If other people or devices share the connection, the bandwidth available to the encoder can vary. A home stream also depends on local power, router, ISP, and your ability to respond when something fails.
Cloud availability is not broadcast continuity
Hetzner’s Cloud Server SLA says it will use “commercially reasonable efforts” to achieve monthly availability of 99.9% for Cloud Servers. That is a provider-published service commitment with conditional remedies, not a guarantee of uninterrupted YouTube broadcasting or zero lost viewers. The stream also depends on the VM, its operating system and encoder, network path, and YouTube ingest.
Plan for encoder stops and archives
YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says a live stream ends when the encoder stops sending content and that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. It also lists CamStreamer as supporting continuous streams; that describes that vendor’s product, not a blanket guarantee that every 24/7 stream will remain live indefinitely. Plan to monitor and recover a stopped stream rather than assuming one broadcast will run or archive without interruption forever.

Choose based on your break-even and operating needs
- Home may cost less on the recurring energy-versus-compute comparison when measured electricity is below the complete VM quote. Account separately for incremental hardware, maintenance, and connectivity costs.
- A cloud VM may suit you better if you do not want a home machine and connection to be part of the stream’s operating path. It still requires you to manage the VM, encoder, and stream recovery.
- Prefer a measured answer to a guessed one: gather the wall-power reading, your marginal tariff, and a current all-in provider quote for the intended region and configuration.
- Consider recovery effort and interruption tolerance alongside cost. Neither a home setup nor a VM price alone establishes that a 24/7 broadcast will be uninterrupted.
