YouTube Loop Stream Goes Offline After Renaming a Source File? Fix the OBS Media Path

A renamed or moved video can leave OBS pointing to its old local path. Update the Media Source or VLC playlist entry, confirm local playback, then check YouTube ingest separately.

If your YouTube loop stream went offline after you renamed or moved its video, first check the file path saved in OBS. A Media Source or VLC Video playlist may still point to the old location. Edit that source to select the file where it is now, then verify playback in OBS and the stream status in YouTube Live Control Room.

Fix the renamed or moved video path in OBS

  1. Find the source that plays the video. In the OBS scene you use for the stream, identify whether the video is a single Media Source or an entry in a VLC Video playlist. OBS describes these as different source types: Media Source is for a local file, while VLC Video can play a playlist (OBS Media Sources; OBS Sources Guide).
  2. For a Media Source, point it to the current file. Select the source, open Properties, and use the local file picker to choose the renamed or moved video. If the source should repeat one video, leave Loop enabled. OBS defines Loop as replaying the file when playback completes (OBS Media Sources).
  3. For VLC Video, update the playlist entry. Open the source properties and replace the entry whose path changed, or remove it and add the file again from its current location. If the playlist should restart after its final item, enable Loop Playlist. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC (OBS Media Sources).
  4. Test locally before checking the broadcast. Confirm the intended video appears in the OBS preview and that its audio is present. Then open YouTube Live Control Room and check its preview and stream status. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality (YouTube live streaming tips – Computer).

The documented OBS source settings point to local media files; the stale-path diagnosis is an inference from that design, not a special OBS rename-recovery procedure. If the file itself is still available, selecting it at its current path—or restoring its old name and location—addresses the likely problem.

Choose the right OBS source and loop setting

Source Best for Loop control Dependency
Media Source One local video or audio file Loop repeats the file after it finishes Built into OBS; supported formats include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM for video and MP3, AAC, OGG, WAV for audio. Source: OBS Media Sources
VLC Video A sequence of local files in a playlist Loop Playlist restarts the sequence after it ends VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Source: OBS Media Sources

Loop and Loop Playlist govern how media plays locally; they do not repair a renamed file path, set YouTube credentials, or guarantee that a live stream remains online. Keep the video in a stable folder after configuring the source. If you move or rename it later, revisit the source or playlist path; this prevention advice follows from the local-file reference behavior documented by OBS.

If OBS preview works but YouTube is offline

A working OBS preview confirms local playback, not the encoder’s connection to YouTube. If the video is visible and audible in OBS but the stream is offline, stop changing the media path and check the outgoing connection instead.

  • Check OBS connection status and look for dropped frames or intermittent disconnections. OBS identifies these symptoms as network issues between the computer and the remote ingest server: Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
  • Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and status, then the public watch page if you need to confirm viewer-facing playback. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream’s audio and video quality: YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.

Keep OBS settings and media paths backed up separately

OBS Profiles save most output and stream settings, while scenes are stored in Scene Collections. Exporting and importing a profile can help transfer settings, but it does not establish that OBS will relink a moved media file. Check the source path on the system where the scene is running (OBS Profiles).

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos without leaving OBS or a home computer running, StreamNeo is a separate cloud-planning option—not a repair for the existing OBS path. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera.
