Choose YouTube Live if you want live broadcasts to sit alongside your YouTube videos and to use its horizontal or vertical live formats. Choose Twitch if you want to build around a livestream-focused channel and Twitch’s Affiliate community and monetization tools. Neither platform’s documented features establish that it will bring you more viewers or income; the better fit depends on your format, audience, eligibility and replay needs.
How the platforms differ
| What matters | YouTube Live | Twitch | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Formats and discovery | YouTube supports horizontal and vertical live streams. Vertical live feeds can appear in the Shorts feed; horizontal streams include features such as clickable links in chat and the description, live pre-roll and mid-roll ads, 4K bitrate broadcast, Premieres and Live Redirect. | The Twitch documentation covered here focuses on broadcast tools and Affiliate and Partner programs; it does not establish a comparable Shorts-style surface. | Choose the format and discovery surfaces that suit your content and where your audience already watches. The available documentation does not establish a reach advantage for either platform. |
| Ways to go live | YouTube documents mobile, webcam, encoder and console methods. A computer webcam is one option, not a requirement. | Twitch provides broadcast tools; the reviewed material does not establish a directly comparable list of setup routes. | Start with the equipment and workflow you already have. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide and Twitch’s broadcast and on-demand content guidance. |
| Viewer interaction | Live Chat, Super Chat, Super Stickers, memberships and gifted memberships are available subject to eligibility. Chat is limited to YouTube watch pages. | Affiliates can use subscriptions and Bits, with creator settings for subscriber and cheering controls. | Think about which interaction features your viewers will actually use, and check feature availability for your account and region. |
| Replay retention | Creators can post a live replay or highlights. The YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a directly comparable universal retention period. | VOD storage must be enabled. Twitch’s help page lists 7 days for other broadcasters, 14 days for Affiliates, and 60 days for Partners, Prime and Turbo users. | If you need long-term archives, verify current storage settings and your export workflow on each service. |
Which platform fits your content?
YouTube Live fits a video-library approach
YouTube is a natural option if you want live broadcasts connected to a channel that also holds your other videos, or if you want to choose between horizontal streams and vertical live feeds. The formats do not have identical features, so decide which presentation and interactions matter for your broadcast rather than assuming every feature works in both orientations. YouTube’s live-stream feature guide describes the available formats and chat experience.

Twitch fits a livestream-centered approach
Twitch is worth prioritizing if your plan is to develop a channel around live broadcasts and make use of its Affiliate tools, including subscriptions and Bits. Affiliate status is a specific eligibility program, not a guarantee of viewers or income, and it is distinct from Partner status.
Let your audience and format decide
- If your viewers already follow your YouTube channel and you want live and uploaded video together, start with YouTube Live.
- If your community is organized around Twitch streams and its subscription and cheering features, start with Twitch.
- If mobile-first vertical presentation is central to your format, consider YouTube’s vertical live feed and its Shorts-feed placement.
- If replay access matters, check retention and export options before choosing; the published retention information differs in scope between the two services.
These are workflow and feature considerations, not evidence that either platform will produce a larger audience. The official information cited here does not compare audience reach, channel growth or typical creator earnings.

Monetization: compare eligibility, not promises
YouTube’s published eligibility thresholds
YouTube’s current published eligibility page, retrieved in 2026, lists a lower access tier for features including memberships and fan funding: 500 subscribers, at least three public uploads in the previous 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public long-form watch hours in 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Its higher threshold for Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads and YouTube Premium is 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified long-form watch hours in 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Feature-specific requirements, country availability, policy review and acceptance of relevant terms or modules also apply. These are YouTube’s published conditions, not an estimate of how quickly a particular channel will qualify. See YouTube’s monetization eligibility details.
For live streams, YouTube documents live ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, memberships and YouTube Premium revenue, subject to the applicable requirements. YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

Twitch Affiliate requirements and revenue features
Twitch’s Affiliate FAQ, retrieved in 2026, lists four achievements within the same 30-day period: 25 followers, four streamed hours, streams on four different days, and an average of three concurrent viewers on four days. Two-factor authentication is required for onboarding. The viewer measure is average concurrent viewers, not total views. Once onboarded, Affiliates can access subscriptions, Bits and ad revenue, subject to Twitch’s terms. See the Twitch Affiliate Program FAQ and Twitch’s Affiliate joining requirements.
Partner status is separate from Affiliate status. Twitch’s Partner documentation says participating Partners receive one cent per Bit used to Cheer; subscription revenue may vary by the subscriber’s country. That rate and variation do not establish a creator’s overall earnings. See Twitch’s Partner Program overview and Affiliate settings guidance.

What these programs do not tell you
Feature lists and eligibility thresholds do not support a reliable comparison of what creators typically earn. Actual access depends on program, account, policy and regional conditions, and YouTube ads may not serve in every slot. Treat monetization as one factor in platform choice, not a forecast.
Plan for replays before you stream
Twitch requires VOD storage to be enabled for broadcasts to be retained as on-demand content. Its current help page lists retention periods by account status: 7 days for other broadcasters, 14 days for Affiliates, and 60 days for Partners, Prime and Turbo users. Confirm your current account settings before relying on those periods, and export anything you need to keep beyond the available window. Read Twitch’s VOD guidance.

YouTube lists webcam streaming as one computer-based option, so a USB webcam can be useful if you want to appear on camera from a computer; it is not a platform requirement. A microphone or dedicated hardware encoder may suit a particular production setup, but neither is established as necessary for every creator. First choose your streaming method, then identify what your existing equipment does not provide. YouTube’s setup guide describes its available routes.
