Neither platform is better for every creator. YouTube Live is the stronger fit if you want encoder-based production, searchable video, and a choice of horizontal and vertical live formats. Facebook Live is worth considering when the people you want to reach already gather around your Facebook profile, Page, or groups. That is a practical audience-fit test, not a promise that either platform will give you more reach.

YouTube Live vs Facebook Live: Which Is Better for Streaming?
Choose based on your audience and workflow—not a blanket claim about reach. YouTube documents several ways to go live, including encoder streaming and horizontal or vertical formats. Facebook Live may make sense if your intended viewers are already active in the Facebook spaces where you can share the broadcast.

YouTube reported that, on average, over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That is YouTube’s own platform-wide statistic, published by Aaron Filner, Senior Director of Product Management, on September 16, 2025; it is not a Facebook comparison or a forecast of how many people will watch a particular channel’s stream. How to choose for your audience and discovery goals
Start with where your intended viewers already are
If your community follows your YouTube channel and searches or browses YouTube for your subject, YouTube Live is a natural place to test a broadcast. If the people you want to reach are organized around a Facebook Page, profile, or group, assess whether Facebook Live suits the way that community communicates and shares events. Existing connections are a reason to consider a platform, not evidence that it will distribute your stream more widely.
Do not treat one platform statistic as a head-to-head result
YouTube’s Q2 2025 live-viewing figure describes logged-in YouTube viewers. The evidence here does not establish a directly comparable Facebook Live audience statistic, nor does it show which platform produces more views for an individual creator. Compare your own audience activity and results rather than assuming a universal reach advantage.

YouTube’s live setup requirements include channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Its guidance also says creators must be at least 16 to livestream. Check the current page before scheduling a first stream, because account status and platform rules can change.
Horizontal and vertical streams are not feature-identical
YouTube describes horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) live experiences. Streams launched from Live Control Room can, by default, be delivered in both formats; the vertical version is centered-cropped unless you adjust the layout. A crop can cut off text, gameplay details, or people near the frame edges, so preview the vertical composition if you plan to use it.
Vertical live streams may be discoverable in the Shorts feed, but YouTube’s feature comparison lists some capabilities for horizontal streams that are not listed for the vertical live feed. Horizontal streams support clickable links in chat and the channel description, live pre-roll and mid-roll ads, 4K-bitrate broadcasting, Premieres, and Live Redirect; memberships are listed for both formats. Feature access can depend on workflow and eligibility. Confirm the current details in YouTube’s live-streaming guidance before choosing a format.

Monetization: compare eligibility, not earnings promises
YouTube live revenue options
YouTube Help describes ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as ways to earn from live streams. These options are subject to eligibility. Eligible monetized streams may receive pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads, but YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Neither access to a feature nor a specific amount of revenue should be assumed: check the requirements for your channel and region in YouTube Help’s live-stream monetization guidance.
Facebook Live monetization availability
Meta’s March 2021 announcement discussed expanding access to in-stream ads for Live and paid online events, among other creator revenue efforts. That historical announcement does not establish what programs are available now or whether a particular account or country qualifies. Check Meta’s current monetization guidance for your location and account before treating Facebook Live income as part of a plan.

A simple decision framework
| What matters most | Better starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder workflow, overlays, or a documented choice of horizontal and vertical live formats | YouTube Live | Channel verification, restrictions, age requirements, format behavior, and feature eligibility in YouTube’s current guide. |
| Reaching a community you already engage with on Facebook | Facebook Live is worth assessing | Your audience’s actual activity, current production requirements, and available account features; existing connections do not guarantee broader reach. |
| Live-stream revenue | Neither by default | Which monetization features your specific account can use, in your country, and their current terms. |
| Long-term replay access | Neither without checking policy | Current retention rules and how to download or keep a separate copy of important recordings. |
If you are unsure, try a comparable stream on the platform where your intended viewers are easiest to invite, then review who joined, how the format worked, and whether the replay meets your needs. Do not interpret one broadcast as a universal platform verdict.
