YouTube’s 12-hour guidance is about saving and rewinding a stream—not a documented automatic cutoff for the live broadcast. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its archive, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. Its Help pages reviewed here do not establish a maximum live duration or say that a scheduled stream is forcibly stopped at 12 hours. If you plan a longer event, arrange a separate local recording and check that it is being saved.
Does YouTube stop a live stream after 12 hours?
YouTube’s official Help documentation does not establish 12 hours as a hard limit on how long a broadcast can stay live. The documented 12-hour threshold concerns what happens to the stream afterward: whether YouTube captures an archive and how far viewers can rewind.

That distinction matters for long scheduled events. The reviewed guidance does not promise that a stream will continue past 12 hours, either; it simply does not document an automatic stop at that point or specify a universal maximum live duration. Avoid treating 12 hours as either a guaranteed cutoff or a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting.

YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be archived in every circumstance, nor is a complete archive assured for a longer broadcast. The guidance applies to encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

For a long event, record a separate local copy instead of relying on YouTube’s archive as the only copy. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. A local recording is not a guarantee against problems with the encoder, storage, power, network, or recording software, so check during the event that the file is actually growing.
Can viewers rewind a long or 24-hour live stream?
DVR lets viewers rewind a live stream while it is in progress, but YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. It also notes lower limits on Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions. Consequently, viewers may not be able to rewind the full length of a long broadcast, even if the live feed is still running. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams

How to prepare a long scheduled broadcast
For an encoder-based broadcast, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use the lead time to check the preview and monitor stream quality, rather than waiting until the advertised start to discover a configuration problem. YouTube Help: Streaming tips

- Set up and test the encoder early. YouTube recommends doing this at least two hours ahead. Confirm the encoder is sending to the intended stream and that the stream appears in the preview.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Check the preview and monitor the stream-quality indicators before telling viewers the event is underway.
- Start a separate local recording. Choose storage based on your encoder settings and intended recording duration. YouTube does not specify a universal storage capacity or recording format for this backup in the guidance cited here.
- During the event, verify the recording is still growing. A local file that has stopped updating will not provide the intended backup, even if the live feed appears normal.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is one option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera, and it does not change the separate archive and DVR cautions described above.
