A YouTube channel can have up to 10 active streams, and a single stream key can have up to 3 active streams. Both limits apply at once: reaching either cap prevents another stream from starting. YouTube does not spell out how every OBS-and-backup configuration is counted, so do not assume that a standby encoder is exempt—or necessarily a second active stream. Test the handoff in your own setup before relying on it.
How many streams can one YouTube channel run?
YouTube’s current Help guidance sets two simultaneous ceilings: 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions). The applicable limit is whichever you reach first. For example, if a stream key already has three active streams, you cannot start a fourth with that key even if the channel has fewer than ten active streams overall.

These are limits on active streams, not a stated limit on how many encoders you may configure. YouTube’s published guidance does not explain how every arrangement involving a primary encoder and a simultaneously transmitting backup is counted. Do not infer from the cap alone whether a particular backup setup consumes another active stream.

The public limit guidance does not settle that question for every configuration. YouTube does recommend testing encoder failover: stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup (YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder). The practical answer is to test your specific encoder, key, and ingestion setup in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assume the backup will switch automatically or that it is excluded from the active-stream limits.

A second encoder is a continuity measure, not a way around YouTube’s channel or stream-key caps. If you need multiple streams, keep track of which are active on the channel and which are using each key before starting another.
Test the primary-to-backup handoff before the event
- Configure both encoders for the intended event. Confirm that each is pointed at the right YouTube stream and ingestion details. Keep the stream key private; YouTube supports custom keys for reuse and lets you reset a key if it is compromised (YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings).
- Allow time for setup and preview. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before the event and starting them at least 15 minutes ahead. In Live Control Room, preview the stream, check that the viewer page is accessible, and monitor audio and video (YouTube Help: Live streaming tips).
- Simulate primary failure. Following YouTube’s test guidance, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable. Confirm that the viewer’s player rolls over to the backup; do not treat a successful encoder connection by itself as proof viewers received a clean handoff.
- Check the result and recovery path. Confirm picture, sound, and stream status in Live Control Room. Check any local archive files as part of the event checklist, and establish how you will restore the primary or stop the backup after the test.
Professional-grade hardware encoders are one option for higher-production events, but YouTube also describes software encoders such as OBS. The right choice depends on the production and whether the exact software or hardware supports the protocol and workflow you intend to use; a second hardware device is not a universal requirement (YouTube Help: Choose your live encoder).

Budget bandwidth and match encoder settings
Upload capacity for two feeds
YouTube recommends upload capacity for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate, with an additional 20% headroom. This is a recommendation for a primary-and-backup setup, not a guarantee that a shared connection will remain reliable. If both encoders depend on the same home network, internet service, power, or computer, a failure of that shared dependency may affect both paths.
Resolution, bitrate, and keyframes
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and protocol rather than choosing a bitrate that exceeds sustainable upload capacity. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions). Make compatible settings on the primary and backup, then verify the actual output in a preview. A target resolution or frame rate does not make an unstable upload connection dependable.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
RTMPS or HLS
YouTube recommends RTMPS for general ingestion. OBS is among the encoders YouTube lists as supporting HLS output; for HLS backup ingestion, YouTube’s instructions say to copy the Backup server URL. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP, so choose a protocol supported by your intended workflow and account for the delay (YouTube Help: Use HLS for live streaming). These instructions do not establish that every OBS version automatically monitors a backup encoder and switches to it.
What a relay does—and does not do
YouTube describes cloud encoder services as a way to distribute one high-quality feed to multiple channels, resolutions, or platforms (YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder). That is a distribution option, not evidence that a relay raises YouTube’s active-stream limits or makes a particular primary-to-backup configuration exempt. Check the service’s destination limits, failover behavior, and plan terms before depending on it.
