The often-cited 12-hour threshold is not a stated cutoff for going live: it is a warning that YouTube may not capture an archive for streams longer than 12 hours, and that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. If you stream prerecorded video continuously, plan separately for live availability, replay preservation, viewer rewind, content rights, and monetization.
Does YouTube limit how long a channel can stay live?
The official YouTube pages reviewed for this article explain how to start and end a stream and describe live-stream terms, but do not state a universal maximum duration for a broadcast. That means the 12-hour warning should not be treated as proof YouTube will stop a stream at 12 hours. The documentation reviewed also does not establish whether account status, location, software, or a particular continuous prerecorded-video setup changes the maximum permitted duration.

What changes after 12 hours: archive versus live broadcast
Replay archives
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” This is an archive caveat, not a stated 12-hour broadcast cutoff. The guidance covers encoder, webcam, and mobile streams and does not announce a separate archive exemption for prerecorded playback. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
If a replay matters, keep a separate local recording. That gives you a copy under your control; it does not change whether YouTube captures its own archive.
Live rewind (DVR)
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream. YouTube warns that, for very long streams, viewers may only be able to rewind up to a limit because DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. This affects rewind during the live broadcast and is distinct from whether a post-stream archive is captured. See YouTube’s DVR explanation.

Can you stream prerecorded videos continuously?
The reviewed YouTube guidance does not identify prerecorded playback as a special exception to the archive warning, nor does it settle every continuous-playback configuration. Treat the 12-hour archive and DVR caveats as relevant planning risks, but do not infer from them that a prerecorded stream must end at 12 hours.
Whether to run continuously depends on what you need:

- A YouTube replay: streams over 12 hours may not be captured, so preserve a local recording if you need a backup.
- Viewer rewind: DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours.
- Monetization: assess originality and repetitiveness separately from whether the video is prerecorded.
Rights and monetization matter independently of duration
Clear the rights to everything in the stream
YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for the content, including music licensing rights, and to comply with applicable rules. A video being prerecorded does not remove that responsibility. Review the livestream terms and conditions before broadcasting.
Prerecorded does not automatically mean ineligible for monetization
YouTube’s channel monetization policies say monetized content should be original and authentic, rather than mass-produced, generic, or repetitive. They do not declare every prerecorded live stream or every loop ineligible. The policy applies to live streaming and says reviewers may consider a channel’s main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, watch-time share, metadata, and About section. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 update renamed and clarified its repetitious-content policy as “inauthentic content”; the page says mass-produced, generic, or repetitive content was already ineligible. Check YouTube’s channel monetization policies for the current wording and assess the channel as a whole.

How to plan a continuous prerecorded stream
- Decide what must survive. Separate the goal of keeping the channel live from the need for a YouTube archive or live rewind; the 12-hour warnings concern the latter two.
- Keep a local recording if replay preservation matters. YouTube says an archive may not be captured when a stream exceeds 12 hours. A local copy is a backup, not a way to change YouTube’s archiving behavior.
- Check DVR expectations. If viewers need to rewind far back during the live broadcast, account for the possibility that DVR is limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours.
- Confirm rights and review monetization suitability. Make sure you have the rights needed for all video and audio, then evaluate whether the channel’s content is original and authentic rather than mass-produced or repetitive.
- Use YouTube’s setup guidance for your chosen method. Its encoder and webcam instructions cover starting a stream, but the reviewed pages do not promise a specific maximum duration for continuous prerecorded playback: encoder instructions and webcam instructions.
