What’s actually slowing this PC down?

An OBS “Encoding overloaded” warning is a clue, not a diagnosis: it does not by itself prove why a YouTube live stream stopped. Check the final OBS session log and separate encoding lag or rendering lag from dropped frames and connection stalls. Then fix the category the evidence points to and test again before going live.
Check the OBS log around the stop
- In OBS, open Help > Log Files > View Current Log if the affected session is still the current one. For an earlier session, use Help > Log Files > View Last Log or Upload Current/Last Log to review the session. Menu labels can vary by OBS version.
- Find the final streaming session and note when it stopped. Read the surrounding messages, including reconnect, shutdown, and error entries—not just an isolated “encoding overloaded” warning.
- Look for which kind of problem appears in that period: encoding lag or skipped frames, rendering lag, dropped frames due to connection stalls, or a YouTube stream-health warning. More than one can occur in the same session.
- Change one relevant setting at a time, then repeat a test with representative audio and movement. This makes it easier to see whether the change addressed the issue.
OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide treats performance overload separately from the connection failures covered in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide. An encoding warning and a stream interruption can coincide without the warning being the only cause.

What the log evidence can mean
| Evidence | What it suggests | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding lag, skipped frames, or encoding overload | The encoder or available system resources may not be keeping up. The specific cause depends on the encoder and computer. | Reduce competing GPU work, cap the game’s frame rate or use V-Sync, lower output resolution or frame rate, and simplify scenes and sources. |
| Rendering lag | OBS may not have enough GPU time to compose and render the scene on time. | Reduce GPU competition and scene complexity; lower output settings if necessary. |
| Dropped frames or intermittent disconnection | The connection to the ingest server may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. | Check upload stability and bitrate; try a lower bitrate or another server, and investigate network software, drivers, Wi-Fi, or router problems. |
| YouTube stream-health warning | YouTube is reporting an ingest or stream issue. The actual warning text matters, and should be considered alongside OBS’s log. | Test before the event and monitor YouTube’s stream-health status and messages while live. |
OBS needs GPU time to render and composite scenes. A game can appear to run smoothly while leaving too little GPU capacity for OBS. Its performance guidance, dated June 12, 2021, identifies competing GPU use and scene complexity as possible contributors; it does not establish a single cause for every overload warning.

When the log points to encoding or rendering performance, reduce workload before considering new hardware. OBS recommends reserving resources for the stream; the most useful first changes are:
#1 Best Overall
- Legend perfected: Modern design with a matte basalt black finish in an optimized chassis with customizable AlienFX lighting zones, including the striking stadium lighting.
- Game changing graphics: Step into the future of gaming and creation with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 graphics, powered by NVIDIA Blackwell architecture.
- Marathon gaming unlocked: This high-performance technology ensures clean energy is consistently available, unleashing the top-level power of Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor as you game, livestream, and multi-task for hours on end.
- Total command: Alienware Command Center software allows you to create and edit AlienFX lighting across the ecosystem, choose and monitor your performance mode across distinct power states, and create custom gaming profiles for your whole library.
- Dell Services: 1 Year Onsite Service provides support when and where you need it. Dell will come to your home, office, or location of choice, if an issue covered by Limited Hardware Warranty cannot be resolved remotely.
- Close other GPU-intensive programs, including a second game or GPU-heavy background task.
- Cap a game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync so it does not consume GPU capacity unnecessarily.
- Reduce OBS output resolution or frame rate, then test whether the stream remains stable.
- Simplify scenes and sources. Expensive filters, browser sources, and large scene collections can add load.
- On Windows, OBS’s performance guide also suggests trying to run OBS as administrator.
Apply one change, run a representative test, and check the log again. A lower output setting is a trade-off in image detail or motion smoothness, so use the least reduction that resolves the performance evidence.
Fix dropped frames and connection stalls separately
If the log chiefly shows dropped frames due to connection stalls or intermittent disconnections, treat it as a connection-to-ingest problem rather than proof of encoder overload. OBS’s connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, recommends checking the connection and configured bitrate. Possible steps include:

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
- Use a bitrate the upload connection can sustain reliably; lowering it can help if the connection is unstable.
- Try another ingest server if available.
- Check network software and drivers, as well as router or Wi-Fi issues. Use wired networking when Wi-Fi is unstable.
A higher bitrate is not automatically better: the connection must sustain it throughout the stream. Likewise, buying a GPU will not resolve a network stall unless the log also points to a performance constraint.
Check YouTube’s encoder settings and stream health
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance makes recommendations conditional on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, its table lists the following for 1080p at 60 fps:
Rank #3
- 【POWERFUL PERFORMANCE】 – AMD Ryzen 5 5500 6-Core 12-Thread Desktop Processor (up to 4.2GHz). Effortlessly handle 3A games, 4K video editing, and multitasking.
- 【SMOOTH GAMING】 – Equipped with GeForce RTX 3050 6GB GDDR6 Graphics Card. Experience high-frame-rate 1080P gaming with ray tracing.
- 【FAST & AMPLE STORAGE】 – 16GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM + 1TB NVMe SSD. Enjoy rapid game loads, quick file transfers, and ample space for your entire library.
- 【KEEP COOL】 – Advanced ARGB air cooling system with multiple fans. Maintains stable performance and low noise even during marathon gaming sessions.
- 【READY TO USE】 – Features built-in Wi-Fi, multiple USB ports, HDMI and DisplayPort (DP) outputs for flexible monitor connectivity. A complete prebuilt gaming computer, plug and play right out of the box.
| Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s settings recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can stream reliably at those values. YouTube also lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Check the current YouTube guidance for the exact codec and output you use; do not apply one bitrate figure to every configuration.
Before the event, test with audio and on-screen movement similar to the real stream. While live, monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages alongside OBS. A YouTube warning without its actual text cannot identify a specific fault, so interpret it with the session log rather than guessing.
