Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

For H.264, YouTube’s guidance gives 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3–8 Mbps for 720p30; these are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a particular Raspberry Pi or network can sustain them. Start at the lower resolution if your board’s encoder support or upload capacity is uncertain, then test the complete playlist and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on it.
Recommended YouTube settings for a Pi playlist
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264 (and also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1), CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Do not set the keyframe interval above four seconds. RTMPS is the encrypted option where the encoder supports it.

| Output profile | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | A conservative first profile when encoding headroom or upload capacity is uncertain. |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | For footage where smoother motion matters and the Pi can encode it sustainably. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | For more image detail when the source, encoder, and connection can maintain it. |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended | For detailed, fast-moving video only after a representative sustained test. |
These figures are from YouTube Help’s current encoder settings page; it does not state a publication year. They are guidance ranges, not Raspberry Pi performance results or a guarantee of smooth delivery. Choose a profile the Pi and measured upload connection can maintain, with headroom for normal network variation. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams for different playback formats.

- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 kbps.
- Picture: YouTube’s advanced guidance includes progressive scan, square pixels, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Confirm what your FFmpeg build and chosen encoder actually produce; do not assume a particular flag is supported on every Pi installation.
- Test content: Include representative movement and audio. A static test frame will not reveal the same encoding or audio issues as the actual playlist.
Check the Raspberry Pi encoder before choosing a profile
There is no profile that can be guaranteed from the board model alone. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding comparison shows Pi 5 software-encoding examples using libx264 and a Pi 4 hardware-encoder example using h264_v4l2m2m. Those are example configurations, not universal performance guarantees. Availability also depends on the installed FFmpeg build and system configuration.

- Check the encoders your FFmpeg installation reports with
ffmpeg -encoders. Look for the encoder you intend to use, such aslibx264orh264_v4l2m2m. - Use the installed FFmpeg version’s help for that encoder, for example
ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264orffmpeg -h encoder=h264_v4l2m2m, to verify available options. If an encoder is absent, the command will not work with that build. - Run a sustained test on the actual board with the intended resolution, frame rate, audio, and playlist. Check for dropped frames, overheating-related slowdown, and stream-health warnings rather than inferring performance from a short command launch.
The Raspberry Pi comparison surfaced with a publication indication of five months before October 3, 2026; its exact publication date and full numeric benchmark results are not established here. Check the current FFmpeg and Raspberry Pi documentation for your installed software and hardware combination.
Prepare a concat playlist that FFmpeg can read
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer plays files sequentially from a text script. It is not a general-purpose fixer for clips with incompatible formats. The files need matching streams, codecs, and time bases; inaccurate stored durations can produce timestamp artifacts, gaps, or awkward transitions. FFmpeg’s rolling master documentation describes the behavior, so check the documentation corresponding to your installed release.

- 2 × USB 3. 0 ports, 2 x USB 2. 0 Ports
- 2 × micro HDMI ports supproting up to 4Kp60 video resolution
- Micro SD card slot for loading operating system and data storage
Create the playlist file
Make a plain-text file such as playlist.txt. Each entry uses the file directive and a path to one input:
file '/home/pi/videos/clip-01.mp4'
file '/home/pi/videos/clip-02.mp4'
file '/home/pi/videos/clip-03.mp4'
Use paths that exist and are readable by the account running FFmpeg. Quote paths containing spaces. For the concat demuxer, inputs must meet FFmpeg’s compatibility requirements; if they do not, convert them to a consistent format before assembling the live output rather than assuming stream copy will make them match.

- 2 USB 3.0 ports; 2 USB 2.0 ports.
- Raspberry Pi standard 40 pin GPIO header (fully backwards compatible with previous boards)
Loop the playlist
The concat demuxer reads the script once. To repeat it continuously, use the input option -stream_loop -1 before the concat input. The command below is a starting template for an H.264 software-encoding setup; it must be adapted to the encoders and options present in your FFmpeg build.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /home/pi/playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
-b:v 5M -minrate 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -ar 44100 -b:a 128k -ac 2
-f flv 'RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY'
This example targets 720p30 only if the source has that format; it does not scale or set an output frame rate. Its 5 Mbps video target sits within YouTube’s 720p30 H.264 guidance. At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds. If you need a fixed output size or frame rate, add and test an appropriate video filter and frame-rate option for the installed FFmpeg build. For 1080p30, use YouTube’s H.264 guidance as the bitrate reference and re-test the Pi rather than simply raising the bitrate.

-re reads the input at its native rate instead of sending the files as fast as possible. -stream_loop -1 repeats the concat input indefinitely. The CBR-oriented bitrate options and GOP settings are a practical template, not a guarantee every encoder interprets options identically. If the selected hardware encoder rejects an option or behaves differently, consult that encoder’s help and confirm the resulting stream settings.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Stream key and RTMPS URL
In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the server URL and stream key and enter them into the encoder. For RTMPS, specifically select or retrieve the RTMPS server URL: YouTube notes the ordinary RTMP URL may be shown by default. RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL. Replace RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY in the example with the exact URL and key in the format your encoder expects; never publish or share the actual key. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room before using the stream again.

Test the full setup in YouTube Live Control Room
- Prepare the playlist, then run FFmpeg with the intended output profile and the RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room.
- Check that YouTube receives the stream and inspect the preview for picture, audio, and transitions between files.
- Let the stream run long enough to exercise playlist changes and a full loop if practical. Watch for timestamp jumps, pauses, silent clips, and FFmpeg errors.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and adjust resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or input compatibility if warnings appear.
- Repeat the test under conditions similar to the planned stream. YouTube Help advises testing with representative movement and audio and monitoring stream health during the event.
Choose latency and DVR behavior for the audience
YouTube’s live settings explain that lower latency can increase playback buffering. DVR lets viewers pause and resume the live stream. For a playlist where interaction is unimportant, choose settings based on the viewing experience you want; if pausing and rewinding matters, retain DVR. Verify the choices in Live Control Room because the appropriate trade-off depends on the stream and audience.
Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Re-check the server URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm that the URL is RTMPS when using RTMPS, and ensure the key has not been reset or exposed. Confirm the Pi can reach YouTube over the network.
- FFmpeg says an encoder or option is unavailable: The installed build may not include that encoder or support that option. Check
ffmpeg -encodersand the relevant encoder help; use a supported encoder or install a compatible FFmpeg build. - Video stutters or stream health degrades: The Pi may not sustain the encode, the upload connection may lack headroom, or both. Test at a lower resolution or frame rate and re-check the live health messages before increasing quality.
- Playback breaks at a clip boundary: Check that all concat inputs have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. Verify file duration metadata; FFmpeg notes that inaccurate durations can cause artifacts, and duration directives can override stored durations.
- Playlist stops after one pass: Confirm
-stream_loop -1appears before the concat input in the command. - Audio is missing or inconsistent: Check that each input has a compatible audio stream and that the selected audio codec and settings are accepted by the encoder. Test every playlist item, not just the first file.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep uploaded videos live on YouTube without maintaining a Pi, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. See StreamNeo for details. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
