To broadcast a nonstop nature playlist on YouTube Live, play the video files in an encoder such as OBS, then send that encoder’s feed to YouTube using the stream URL and a private stream key. In OBS, use a VLC Video source for multiple files and enable Loop Playlist; for one long file, use a Media Source and enable its separate Loop option. A regular YouTube playlist is not itself a live broadcast.
Choose how the nature footage will play
The broadcast has two parts: a playback source that repeats your footage and an encoder that sends it to YouTube Live. Choose the OBS source to match your files:

Use footage and audio you have permission to broadcast. Looping a file does not grant rights to its video, music, ambient recordings, or other included material.

Enable YouTube live streaming and create the broadcast
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned broadcast. YouTube Live streaming tips
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream, then locate its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s setup guidance explains where to find and use them. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Keep the key private. It is a credential, not a public channel link. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your stream’s password and address.” If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube: Manage live stream settings
Set up the looping source in OBS
- Install VLC if you plan to use the VLC Video source.
- In OBS, go to the Sources box, select +, and choose VLC Video for multiple clips, or Media Source for one file.
- For VLC Video, add the authorized files to the playlist and enable Loop Playlist. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if a changing order is appropriate. For Media Source, select the file and enable Loop.
- Check the OBS preview. Confirm the intended clip appears, the order or shuffle behavior is right, and audio is audible at a suitable level. For a nature stream, check both quiet sections and louder sounds such as rain or birds.
Connect OBS and choose encoding settings
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then enter the stream key from Live Control Room; if your OBS workflow offers a server field, use YouTube’s stream URL as well. Do not share either value.
- Choose the transport supported by your encoder and YouTube setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Use RTMP only where compatibility or the selected setup calls for it. YouTube: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- In Settings > Output, use the encoder settings appropriate to the selected codec and target quality. YouTube’s current guidance supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; use the corresponding row in its settings table rather than assuming bitrate values transfer between codecs.
- For a conventional H.264 SDR setup, choose CBR, a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (no more than 4 seconds), and a frame rate up to 60 fps. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. For ordinary nature footage, SDR is the straightforward choice unless the source and workflow specifically require HDR.
- Match output resolution and frame rate to the footage and to a bitrate your upload can sustain. YouTube’s H.264 table recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; for 720p30 it recommends 6 Mbps and for 720p60, 8 Mbps. These are recommendations for those codec/resolution/frame-rate combinations, not guarantees or universal minimums. Check the current table for other combinations. YouTube encoder settings
YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default and transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers. That does not remove the need to send a stable feed: test your actual upload connection and avoid setting a bitrate it cannot sustain.

Test, go live, and monitor the feed
- Before the real broadcast, test with representative footage, movement, and audio—not just a static opening frame.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check that the expected picture and sound arrive before selecting Go live.
- During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream health and OBS for buffering, dropped frames, audio problems, or a source that stops advancing. Plan for replays and viewer rewind
Do not assume a nonstop broadcast will produce one complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the replay matters, record a local backup and consider ending and restarting the broadcast in segments under 12 hours. YouTube: Archive live streams
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream, but YouTube warns DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers a particular rewind window for a very long broadcast. YouTube: DVR on live streams

Troubleshooting common problems
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and add the source again.
- The playlist stops at the last clip: Confirm you used VLC Video for multiple files and enabled Loop Playlist. For a single file, check Loop in Media Source instead.
- YouTube receives no feed: Verify the selected YouTube service, stream URL and key, and that OBS is actively streaming. If the key was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS.
- The preview buffers or stream health is poor: Check upload capacity and dropped frames; reduce the output bitrate or quality to a level the connection can sustain, then test again.
- Picture looks soft or motion breaks up: Check that OBS output resolution and frame rate suit the source and that bitrate matches YouTube’s table for the chosen codec. Raising bitrate beyond the connection’s capacity can make delivery less reliable.
- Audio is silent, clipped, or inconsistent: Inspect OBS audio meters and source settings, then test representative quiet and loud sections before going live.
- There is no complete replay: A stream over 12 hours may not be archived. Use a local recording as backup and shorter stream segments if relying on YouTube’s automatic archive behavior.
