YouTube Live Stream Says “Connecting” Forever: How to Fix OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If OBS stays on “Connecting,” first check the stream’s status in YouTube Studio → Go Live → select the stream in Live Control Room. The status message, OBS connection details and log, encoder output, and outbound network tests help distinguish a bad key or setup from an encoder or network problem. There is no single fix for every case.

1. Check YouTube’s live status before changing OBS

Open YouTube Studio → Go Live, then select the relevant stream in Live Control Room. Read the stream status and any error instructions. YouTube says stream status includes specific error messages with instructions; use those details to guide the next check rather than treating OBS’s “Connecting” label as a diagnosis. YouTube Help: See your live stream’s metrics.

Note whether YouTube detects an incoming feed and whether the preview appears. If the message points to the stream key or encoder setup, investigate those first. If YouTube reports no incoming feed and OBS has no more specific error, continue through the checks below.

2. Verify OBS’s YouTube service, server and stream key

In OBS, open Settings → Stream and check that the service and server/stream URL match the YouTube configuration you intend to use. Confirm the stream key is present and belongs to that stream. YouTube describes a stream key as the information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: do not post it, send it to someone troubleshooting publicly, or include it in screenshots.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If you reset the key in YouTube, replace the old value in OBS with the new one; resetting it does not update the encoder automatically. YouTube’s advice to get a key in Live Control Room and update the encoder applies to certain third-party encoder startup errors, not every case of OBS connecting indefinitely. Follow the error shown for your stream. YouTube Help: Stream keys · YouTube Help: Troubleshoot problems with your encoder.

Use the protocol and server supported by the selected OBS and YouTube configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS as an encrypted extension of RTMP, but changing protocols without a matching supported configuration is not a guaranteed fix. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

3. Confirm OBS is producing a healthy feed

Check that OBS is current, the intended scene and sources are active, and the encoder is actually starting. Look at OBS’s status and log for connection or encoder errors. Check that the local preview behaves as expected and that audio meters respond when they should. YouTube also recommends checking whether the encoder output looks and sounds healthy; if quality is abnormal, CPU load or a local recording can help distinguish a local encoding problem from an ingest problem. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps.

If OBS cannot render the scene or start encoding, fix that local issue before diagnosing YouTube or the internet connection. If the local output is healthy but the feed does not reach YouTube, continue to network checks.

4. Test whether upload capacity can sustain the stream

Run an upload speed test and compare stable upload capacity—not just a brief peak—with the bitrate selected in OBS. YouTube’s current encoder settings list recommendations by codec, resolution and frame rate; use the row matching your actual output rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

If your connection cannot reliably sustain the selected bitrate, lower it in OBS and test again. OBS suggests using about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when choosing bitrate; it is not a guarantee or a universal threshold. Leave capacity for normal network use and fluctuations. A lower bitrate can reduce dropped frames or connection instability, but it also reduces video quality.

5. Isolate VPN, security software and Wi-Fi issues

  • VPN or traffic-prioritization software: Temporarily test without it, if safe and permitted by your network policy. If this changes the result, investigate that software’s routing or streaming settings.
  • Firewall or antivirus: Check whether security software is blocking OBS’s outbound connection. If a controlled test identifies it as the cause, add an OBS exception and turn protection back on; do not leave security disabled as a workaround.
  • Wi-Fi: If possible, test using wired Ethernet. A wired test can reveal whether an unstable wireless link is involved; it will not fix a wrong key or incorrect service setting.
  • Other network: If available, test from a different permitted connection. Compare results and record what changed so you can identify whether the problem follows the computer or the network.

OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide discusses server selection, bitrate, software interference, wired networking and contacting the ISP for persistent network problems. It cautions against replacing network hardware without evidence of a hardware fault. OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

6. Try OBS network options as reversible tests

OBS documents a few network options that can be useful for targeted troubleshooting. Change one item at a time, test, and restore the original setting if there is no improvement.

  • Try another available server: If the selected service offers another ingest server, test it and compare the result.
  • Bind to IP: In OBS’s network settings, leave Bind to IP at Default unless there is a specific reason to test another interface.
  • IPv4-only: OBS suggests testing IPv4-only in some cases. If it does not help, restore IPv4/IPv6 rather than leaving a change that has not improved the connection.
  • Network optimizations and TCP pacing: OBS documents these as Windows-only options that some users report can help with disconnections. They are tests, not universal fixes for a persistent connecting state.
  • Dynamic bitrate: This fallback can reduce bitrate when network conditions worsen, potentially lowering dropped frames. It trades away quality and does not repair the underlying network cause.

See the OBS guide for the relevant options and cautions.

7. Test before going live, then escalate with evidence

YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health and messages while streaming. Confirm the preview and status are healthy before relying on the setup. YouTube encoder settings · YouTube live metrics and status.

If the issue persists, keep the exact YouTube status/error, relevant OBS log entries, connection type, chosen service/server, and whether a wired or alternate-network test changed anything. Contact your ISP if outbound connectivity remains unstable across tests; OBS advises asking the ISP before replacing hardware when the cause is unclear. The cause of an individual incident cannot be identified from the “Connecting” display alone.

Common symptoms that point to different problems

What you see What it may indicate What to check
YouTube reports a key or startup error Stream credentials or encoder setup may be wrong Follow the Live Control Room message; verify the service, server and key in OBS. Update the key only if it was reset or YouTube’s error instructions call for it.
OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects The network path to the ingest server may be unstable Check stable upload capacity, bitrate, Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, interference and available server choices.
OBS preview or encoding is unhealthy The problem may be local to sources, encoding or computer load Check OBS status/log, source output, audio and CPU load; update OBS.
Viewers report buffering, but OBS does not show dropped frames Viewer buffering is not the same symptom as an encoder failing to connect Use the separate OBS buffering guidance rather than assuming the broadcaster has a connection failure: OBS Project: Stream Buffering Troubleshooting.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a prerecorded video or playlist looping live on YouTube around the clock, rather than a camera or live OBS production, StreamNeo runs the playback from the cloud.
