How to Stream 4K 60fps to YouTube Live Without a Capture Card

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can stream 4K at 60 fps to YouTube Live without a capture card when the computer running your encoder can access the game or screen directly. Use a software encoder, set its output to 2160p60 with YouTube-compatible settings, and make sure your internet connection can sustain the bitrate. This is a workable route for a game running on that computer; a console-only source needs a separate, device-supported way to reach the streaming computer.

What you need for a capture-card-free 4K60 stream

The basic setup is a computer that can access the game or screen, an encoder capable of outputting 2160p at 60 fps, a YouTube Live event and stream key, and enough upload bandwidth for the video and audio. YouTube lists screen sharing and gameplay broadcasting as encoder use cases (YouTube’s encoder workflow).

  • Game or screen on the encoding computer: Capture it with the encoder’s software source. The computer must be able to access the material you want to broadcast.
  • Console-only gameplay: You need a supported way to make the console’s output available to the streaming computer. The official YouTube workflow does not establish a universal console-to-PC, remote-play or built-in method that guarantees 4K60 without a capture card. Check the specific console and software pathway before relying on it.
  • Encoder and hardware: Choose an encoder and hardware combination that supports the desired source, codec and 2160p60 output. A 4K desktop or game setting alone does not prove that the encoded stream is 4K60.
  • Stable upload capacity: Plan for the selected video bitrate plus audio and roughly 20% headroom, following YouTube’s streaming bandwidth guidance.

Set up the YouTube Live event and stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or prepare the event for your stream. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours (YouTube’s encoder workflow).
  2. For an encoder-based stream, locate the event’s stream URL and stream key in the Live Control Room. Enter them in the encoder’s streaming or broadcast settings; exact labels vary by encoder.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a credential: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  4. Confirm the event is configured as intended—such as public, unlisted or private—before going live. Start with a test or an unlisted event if you want to check the feed without broadcasting publicly.

Choose 2160p60 encoder settings

YouTube’s current English-language encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, lists the following live video bitrate guidance for 2160p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of the quality every viewer will receive.

Setting Guidance for 2160p60 Practical note
Video bitrate, AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps minimum; 35 Mbps recommended Use the recommended value if both your encoder and stable upload connection can sustain it.
Video bitrate, H.264 14 Mbps minimum; 50 Mbps recommended H.264 calls for more bitrate than AV1 or H.265/HEVC in YouTube’s listed 2160p60 guidance.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps Set the encoder output to 60 fps and verify the resulting stream; source settings do not automatically determine encoder output.
Rate control CBR Set constant bitrate where the encoder exposes this option.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds Use a 2-second interval unless a specific supported setup requires otherwise.
Protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it.
Audio AAC or MP3 for stereo; YouTube lists AAC for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS Choose an audio format supported by your encoder and intended channel layout.

These figures come from YouTube’s encoder settings. YouTube pages in other languages may show different table layouts or values; check the current English-language settings page if you need to confirm the listed guidance.

Codec, color and HDR choices

YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for live encoding. Codec availability depends on the encoder and hardware, so select a combination your setup actually supports. For SDR, YouTube’s guidance includes Rec. 709 and 8-bit video. HDR is a distinct configuration: YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC for HDR, and its encoder settings table does not support AV1 for HDR (YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance; encoder settings). Do not treat SDR Rec. 709 settings as an HDR setup.

Latency at 4K

YouTube says its low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160p streams; 4K live streams use normal latency. If rapid audience interaction is essential, account for that trade-off rather than assuming a 4K stream can use low latency (YouTube encoder settings).

Check your upload bandwidth

Use outbound upload capacity, not download speed, to judge whether the connection can sustain a stream. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% room beyond the total stream bitrate. For example, a video bitrate of 35 Mbps needs more than 35 Mbps of available upload capacity once audio and headroom are considered; it is not a promise that a connection advertised at 35 Mbps will be enough.

  • Run an upload-speed check under conditions similar to the planned stream, ideally when other household or office traffic is representative.
  • Prefer a wired Ethernet connection when practical. It can reduce local wireless variability, but it cannot raise the upload capacity supplied by your internet plan.
  • If the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate reliably, lower the bitrate or reduce resolution or frame rate. A stable lower setting is preferable to a 4K60 output that repeatedly drops frames or disconnects.

Test the stream before going public

  1. Start a private or unlisted test stream, or use another suitable test event.
  2. Include motion and audio similar to the actual broadcast. A static desktop is not a useful test for fast gameplay, and silence will not expose audio problems.
  3. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream health, warnings and messages while the encoder is running.
  4. Verify the received resolution and frame rate where YouTube’s tools report them. Confirm that the video and audio remain stable before switching to a public event.

YouTube advises creators to test with comparable movement and audio, then monitor stream health and messages during the event (YouTube encoder settings). YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into viewer formats, so sending a 2160p60 feed does not guarantee every viewer will receive 4K60 playback. The available rendition and playback experience depend on YouTube’s processing and the viewer’s conditions.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube shows a warning or the feed drops Insufficient or variable upload capacity, or an unsupported encoder setting Check Live Control Room messages, measure upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom and lower bitrate if needed.
The stream is not actually 2160p60 The game, capture source or encoder output is set to a lower resolution or frame rate Check source properties and encoder output independently; verify 2160p and 60 fps in the received stream information.
The encoder cannot select the desired codec The encoder or hardware does not support that codec for the selected output Use a supported codec, such as H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 where available, and apply the bitrate guidance for that codec.
The stream key is rejected or the wrong event receives video The encoder has an incorrect URL or key, or the key belongs to a different event Copy the stream URL and key from the intended Live Control Room event, then update the encoder configuration.
A console game is unavailable to the computer The computer has no supported path to access the console’s video Verify the console-specific supported pathway. YouTube’s general encoder instructions do not guarantee a capture-card-free 4K60 console method.
Viewers report delay 4K uses normal latency in YouTube’s live settings Plan for normal latency at 2160p; do not expect the low-latency option to be available for 4K.
