On Android and iOS, choose Advanced when it appears, then select a resolution. This sets playback quality for your viewing session; it does not change the creator’s stream settings, and YouTube may not offer every resolution on every device or stream.
Set the quality for the live stream you are watching
- Open the player settings. Click or tap the gear icon in the YouTube player. On a TV, use the player controls to open Settings.
- Choose Quality. Select Quality from the settings menu.
- Select a resolution. Pick the available option you want, such as 720p or 1080p. Avoid Auto if you want to choose the resolution yourself.
The selection applies to the current video or live stream. If the player later returns to Auto, reopen Quality and select the resolution again. YouTube’s help guidance describes these controls for computer, mobile, and TV, but labels and availability can differ by device, app version, browser, stream, and region.
Change quality on Android or iPhone/iPad
Tap the video, open the gear icon, and tap Quality. Depending on the video and app, the choices may include Auto, Higher picture quality, Data saver, or Advanced. Tap Advanced to choose a specific resolution when that option is available. YouTube notes that Advanced is not available for every video.
Mobile YouTube also lets you choose general quality preferences for Wi-Fi and mobile networks. These preferences affect future viewing choices on the relevant connection type; they are not the same as selecting a resolution for one live stream. Higher picture quality may use more data, take longer to start, or buffer more often. See YouTube’s instructions for changing video quality for device-specific controls.

Auto, manual resolution, and mobile preferences
| Choice | Who selects the quality? | Where it applies | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto | YouTube adjusts playback in response to viewing conditions. | The current video or stream. | Can change resolution as conditions change; may reduce quality to keep playback going. |
| Manual resolution | You choose an available resolution in the player. | The current video or stream. | May buffer if your connection or device cannot sustain that quality; the resolution may not be offered. |
| Mobile quality preference | You set a general preference for Wi-Fi and mobile networks; YouTube still handles playback choices. | Future mobile viewing on the relevant connection type. | Higher picture quality can use more data, start more slowly, or buffer more often. |
Why a live stream’s resolution keeps changing
YouTube says playback quality changes according to viewing conditions. Its listed factors include internet connection speed, player or screen size, the quality of the original stream, and browser support. A player may therefore drop to a lower resolution when conditions worsen, then offer or switch to a higher one later. This is not necessarily a fault in the stream or app.
- Check the connection where you are watching. If the connection is variable, Auto may lower the resolution to maintain playback. If you use Wi-Fi and suspect coverage is inconsistent, test closer to the access point or compare with a more stable connection. An Ethernet connection can be an optional diagnostic for a computer or TV that supports it; it does not lock resolution.
- Consider the screen and player size. YouTube takes player or screen size into account, so quality options and automatic choices may differ across a phone, browser window, and television.
- Check the source and browser. The stream must provide a quality level, and the browser or device must support the format. Changing the viewer setting cannot create a resolution the stream or device does not support.
- Distinguish buffering from a missing setting. A resolution that is absent from the menu is different from one that is available but plays inconsistently. Availability depends on the device, browser, and stream.
YouTube’s explanation of adaptive playback is in its video quality help page.

If you create the live stream: encoder resolution is separate
A viewer’s Quality selection does not control the creator’s encoder. YouTube’s recommended default is to automatically detect resolution and frame rate. For a stream using an encoder, creators can set manual ingestion resolution through a custom stream key in Live Control Room and its manual stream-resolution setting. YouTube then transcodes live streams for different devices and network conditions, so choosing one encoder resolution does not force every viewer to receive that same playback rendition.
Current YouTube live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these example recommended ingestion bitrates. They are recommendations for the encoder-to-YouTube feed, not viewer internet-speed requirements or guarantees of the quality a viewer will receive:

The player keeps switching away from my selection
Confirm that you selected a specific resolution rather than Auto. If playback still falters, the connection may not sustain the selected quality; try a lower available resolution or investigate the network conditions. A manual selection is not a promise of uninterrupted playback.

The resolution I want is missing
Check another device or browser if practical, and confirm that the stream itself offers that quality. YouTube says some qualities may be unavailable because of the device, browser, or video. On mobile, Advanced may not appear for every video.
The stream looks soft even at the highest option
The highest available playback option depends on the source stream and the rendition YouTube makes available to your device. A viewer cannot improve the original stream by changing player settings. If you own the stream, check your encoder configuration and the YouTube Live Control Room preview.

Only one phone or network has the problem
Compare the same stream on another device or connection. Differences can help identify whether the issue is tied to that device’s supported formats, screen, browser, or connection, rather than the creator’s input.
1080p Premium does not lock live-stream quality
YouTube’s 1080p Premium option is an enhanced-bitrate choice for eligible uploaded videos, not a quality setting for live streams. It will not make a live stream stay at 1080p. Use the live player’s available Quality options instead.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your question is also about keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera feeds. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
