Choose Normal for the most reliable viewing and for 4K; choose Low for limited interaction; choose Ultra-low when real-time conversation matters enough to accept a greater risk of buffering.
Normal, Low, or Ultra-low: which should you choose?
| Setting | Best suited to | YouTube’s typical viewer latency description | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive streams, or streams where stable playback matters more than immediate replies | YouTube’s guide does not state a typical time figure for this mode. | Least viewer buffering; supports all resolutions and live features. |
| Low | Some interaction, such as polls, when you do not need to wait for audience replies | Most viewers experience less than 10 seconds, according to YouTube. | A middle ground, but 4K is not supported. |
| Ultra-low | Live back-and-forth conversation with viewers | Most viewers experience less than five seconds, according to YouTube. | More likely to buffer and more sensitive to network-ingestion issues; 4K is not supported. |
YouTube’s “most viewers” descriptions are not guarantees for every viewer or a promise of the streamer’s exact end-to-end delay. Congestion and other network conditions can add delay even when the average upload bitrate is sufficient. YouTube Help: Understand live streaming latency.
Choose based on interaction and resolution
Use Normal for a stream that does not need real-time replies
Normal is the sensible default for a lecture, performance, or other broadcast where viewers mainly watch rather than respond in real time. YouTube describes it as the highest-quality option for viewers because it provides the least buffering, and it supports all resolutions and live features.
Use Low for limited interaction
Choose Low if you want features such as polls but do not need to react immediately to what viewers say. YouTube presents it as a balance between interaction and playback smoothness.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use Ultra-low for live conversation only when the connection can support it
Ultra-low is the best fit when the stream depends on quick audience participation or a conversational exchange. It leaves viewers with less time between the live event and playback, but it also makes uneven delivery more noticeable. Confirm that your connection can sustain the selected bitrate and be prepared for more playback interruptions.
Choose Normal if you need 4K
If you plan to stream at 4K/2160, use Normal. YouTube says Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K; its encoder guidance also says 4K streams are optimized for quality and set to Normal latency. See YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

How to change the latency setting
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Enter the stream details, then open Stream or Manage.
- Open Stream Settings and find Stream latency.
- Select Normal, Low, or Ultra-low, then test the setup before the event.
Available controls can depend on how you start the stream. YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and their latency cannot be changed manually; the latency-setting guidance applies to encoder or mobile streams and excludes webcam streams. Check YouTube’s current instructions for your streaming method in Understand live streaming latency.
Why lower latency can cause more buffering
Video players build up a read-ahead buffer to smooth out changes in delivery speed. That buffer accounts for much of the delay. A lower-latency mode reduces the time available to absorb uneven delivery, so viewers are more likely to see playback interruptions if the connection between encoder and player fluctuates. YouTube summarizes the trade-off plainly: “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Test before you go live
- Check that your upload connection can sustain the bitrate you have selected, especially if using Ultra-low latency.
- Run a test stream and use video and movement similar to what you plan to broadcast; a static test may not reveal issues that appear during active content.
- Monitor stream health and review any encoder messages before the public broadcast.
- Choose an encoder quality that is reliable for your available connection, rather than setting a bitrate it cannot consistently deliver. YouTube recommends running an upload-speed test as part of setup.
During playback, YouTube’s “Stats for nerds” includes Buffer Health, which can help viewers diagnose playback conditions. For mode-specific guidance, see YouTube’s latency guide and encoder settings guide.
