Use two independent checks: monitor whether FFmpeg is running and still emitting progress, then check whether YouTube is receiving the stream and reporting healthy input. Alert when either side shows a problem, and include the time and the latest status or error details. FFmpeg being alive alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a usable stream.
What a useful stream health check needs to detect
A single “FFmpeg process is running” check misses failures between your encoder and YouTube. Conversely, a YouTube status check cannot tell you whether FFmpeg has exited or stopped making progress locally. Monitor both ends:

- Encoder-side: FFmpeg process state and the arrival of its machine-readable progress records.
- YouTube-side: the incoming stream’s status and health, checked through the YouTube Live Streaming API or in Live Control Room.
These signals describe different things. YouTube’s active stream status means it is receiving data; it is not a guarantee that every viewer can play the broadcast without buffering or other playback problems.

Emit machine-readable progress from FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -progress option sends program-friendly progress information to a URL. For a command that sends its stream to YouTube, a common starting point is -progress pipe:1, which writes progress to standard output. Progress is made up of key=value lines, with each complete record ending in a progress=continue or progress=end line. The -stats_period option controls how often FFmpeg reports progress; its documented default is 0.5 seconds. That default is a reporting interval, not a recommended outage timeout.

Add the options to your existing FFmpeg command, keeping your current inputs, encoding options, and YouTube output URL or stream key intact:
ffmpeg [your existing input and encoding options]
-stats_period 1
-progress pipe:1
[your existing YouTube output options] [output]
This example sets a one-second reporting interval. Choose the interval for your setup; it is not a YouTube requirement. Ensure your supervisor can read standard output without mixing it into the media output. If your existing workflow uses standard output for media, send progress to a different destination that your monitor can read.

What the watchdog should record
- The time each complete progress record arrives.
- Whether the FFmpeg process is running.
- If it exits, its exit time and status.
- The most recent progress fields, so an alert has useful context rather than only a generic failure label.
Treat process exit and stale progress as separate signals: a process can exit outright, or it can remain present while progress updates stop. Your watchdog should alert on either condition.

There is no universal timeout prescribed by FFmpeg. Set a threshold based on the progress interval you configured, the input and output behavior you expect, and how much delay you can tolerate before notification. A threshold only slightly longer than the reporting interval may be sensitive to scheduling delays; a much longer one detects a stall later. Test the chosen value under the conditions in which you plan to broadcast.

Have the watchdog evaluate age from the last complete progress record, not merely whether the FFmpeg process exists. A useful alert should say which local check failed, when the last record arrived, and whether FFmpeg is still running.
Check YouTube’s receive-side status and health
For automated monitoring, the YouTube Live Streaming API exposes a liveStream.status object with streamStatus and healthStatus. The documented stream-status values include active, created, ready, inactive, and error. active indicates that YouTube is receiving data; the other values need to be interpreted in the context of the broadcast you intended to run.

The health status can be good, ok, bad, or noData. noData means YouTube’s live-streaming backend has no health-status information; by itself it does not establish that the encoder has failed. The health object can also include its last update time and configuration issues. In YouTube’s documented severity model, good means there are no configuration issues at warning severity or worse, while ok means there are no issues at error severity.
API monitoring or Live Control Room?
- Use API polling when you need an automated monitor. Your implementation needs API access and must handle authorization, polling, and quota considerations; those details depend on your project and implementation.
- Use Live Control Room for an operator watching a dashboard. YouTube shows stream health and error messages there, including timestamps.
The documentation does not prescribe a universal polling cadence or alert delivery method. Choose a cadence that fits your response needs and API use. Do not treat one observation of noData as an automatic restart instruction: check again and consider the broadcast’s current state.

Put both layers into one alert
Trigger an alert for FFmpeg exit, stale FFmpeg progress, or a YouTube status or health condition that is unexpected for the planned broadcast. Preserve YouTube’s latest issue reason and description when available. The documented issue examples include missing audio or video, an unsupported video codec, mismatched primary and backup stream settings, and video ingestion starvation.
A concise alert should contain:
- The timestamp and name of the stream or broadcast.
- The failed check: process exit, stale local progress, or unexpected YouTube status or health.
- FFmpeg’s running state, exit status if it has stopped, and time of the last progress record.
- YouTube’s latest status, health value, issue reason or description, and update time when available.
If brief transitions would generate repeated notifications, add deduplication or a short confirmation window. That is an implementation choice, not a timeout or alert policy set by YouTube or FFmpeg.
Test the monitor before relying on it
- Confirm progress arrives. Start the FFmpeg job and verify that your supervisor receives complete progress records at the interval you expect.
- Verify the local failure paths. In a controlled test, check that the monitor distinguishes a stopped process from progress that has become stale.
- Check YouTube’s view. Confirm that your API monitor can read the relevant stream status and health fields, or that the operator can find health and error messages in Live Control Room.
- Test notification delivery. Send a test alert to the destination you plan to use and confirm that its timestamp and diagnostic details are readable.
- Exercise realistic input conditions. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the actual event, while watching stream health and messages.
Common alerting problems and fixes
| Symptom | What it can mean | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg is running, but the watchdog reports stale progress | The monitor is not receiving complete progress records, or FFmpeg has stopped emitting them. | Confirm the progress destination is readable, records reach their terminating progress line, and standard output is not being consumed by another part of the media pipeline. |
| FFmpeg is healthy locally, but YouTube reports a problem | Local process health does not establish that YouTube is receiving a correctly configured stream. | Read the latest YouTube health issue and timestamp. Check the reported condition, such as absent audio or video, a codec issue, a primary/backup mismatch, or ingestion starvation. |
YouTube reports noData |
The backend has no health-status information; this value alone does not identify the cause. | Repeat the check, compare stream status and local progress, and account for whether the broadcast is expected to be active. |
| Alerts repeat during a transient change | The monitor may be notifying on every observation rather than on a sustained or new condition. | Consider a confirmation window or deduplication, while retaining the first failure time and most recent diagnostic details. |
| The alert says only “stream down” | The notification lacks enough evidence to distinguish a local encoder failure from a YouTube receive-side issue. | Include the failed layer, timestamps, latest FFmpeg state, and YouTube’s issue reason or description when available. |
Where the monitor runs matters
A monitor on the same machine as FFmpeg is simple to deploy, but it shares that machine’s failure domain: if the host goes down, the monitor may go down too. An independently hosted monitor can still notify you when the encoder host is unavailable, at the cost of added hosting and setup complexity. This is a design trade-off, not a requirement for the two-layer checks.
Or let it run in the cloud
For an always-on YouTube stream built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud-running option—not an FFmpeg health monitor. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It does not stream from a camera.
- Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required; the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
