A YouTube live stream 403 error in FFmpeg is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First establish whether the rejection came from a YouTube Live Streaming API request, FFmpeg’s RTMP/RTMPS publish attempt, or YouTube Studio after the stream connected. Those paths expose different errors and require different fixes. If FFmpeg is publishing with a stream key, YouTube’s encoder-start guidance is to create a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder; if the error is an API response, use its operation and exact error detail instead.
First identify where the 403 appears
Capture the complete relevant error text and the point at which it occurs. Keep your stream key private: redact it before sharing a command or log. An FFmpeg command that publishes to an ingestion URL is not the same as a command or application making a YouTube Live Streaming API request.

| Where the error appears | What to inspect | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| A YouTube Live Streaming API response | The API operation and its exact error detail. YouTube documents operation-specific 403 errors, including permission and resource-state errors. | A generic cause for an FFmpeg RTMP publish failure. |
| FFmpeg connecting or publishing to an RTMP/RTMPS ingest URL | FFmpeg’s output, the current ingestion URL and scheme, and the stream key configured in Live Control Room. | That an API permission error occurred. A raw ingest rejection is not automatically an API error. |
| YouTube Studio after ingest begins | The Live Control Room status and any stream-health or configuration warnings. | That a later video or audio health issue caused an earlier authorization rejection. |
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP-family transport behavior; it is not a universal explanation for YouTube 403 responses. FFmpeg protocol documentation and YouTube’s Live Streaming API errors reference cover different layers.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the stream’s settings and create or select a new stream key using the controls available for that stream.
- Update the key in the FFmpeg command or the configuration that supplies it. Do not paste the key into a public log, screenshot, or support post.
- Start FFmpeg again and check whether the rejection is gone. If it remains, preserve the new output and continue with the URL/protocol checks below rather than assuming the key was the only cause.
If the streaming software signs in to YouTube directly instead of using a stream key, YouTube says to contact that software provider for support. That is a different setup from entering a key in FFmpeg.
Check the ingest URL and RTMP/RTMPS scheme
Compare the endpoint in your FFmpeg command with the current server URL and stream settings shown by YouTube. A YouTube liveStream resource includes an ingestion address and a stream name; when working with API-created or API-managed streams, those resource fields and its status can help distinguish an endpoint or stream-state issue. YouTube’s liveStream resource reference describes those fields.

- Make sure the command uses the current ingestion server URL and the correct stream name or key for that stream.
- Do not switch between RTMP and RTMPS by guesswork. If the selected endpoint is RTMPS, use an
rtmps://URL, notrtmp://. - YouTube’s RTMPS guidance mentions trying port 443 for specified SSL errors or connection timeouts. This is symptom-specific guidance, not a proven fix for every 403.
See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance for its server URL and transport instructions. If the visible response is an API 403 rather than an SSL error or timeout, changing ports is not a substitute for reading the API error detail.
For an API 403, diagnose the operation and error detail
If the response is from a YouTube Live Streaming API call, record which operation failed and the exact error detail in its response. YouTube lists errors such as liveBroadcastBindingNotAllowed, insufficientLivePermissions, liveStreamingNotEnabled, and liveStreamModificationNotAllowed. They refer to distinct permission or resource-state situations; they are not interchangeable diagnoses for a raw FFmpeg ingest failure.

Use the operation and returned detail to check authorization, the broadcast or stream’s current state, and whether the operation is allowed for that resource. Some errors require a different state or authorization; some stream fields cannot be modified after creation. Do not infer that live streaming is disabled just because FFmpeg printed “403”—that conclusion requires the corresponding API response. See the YouTube Live Streaming API error reference.
If the stream connects, inspect health separately
A stream that YouTube has accepted can still have a configuration or health problem. If the broadcast exists and ingest has started, inspect its health information in Live Control Room. For API-managed streams, status.healthStatus.configurationIssues can report issues including unsupported codecs, missing audio or video, rate or frame mismatches, and insufficient video input. These warnings concern stream configuration and quality; by themselves, they do not prove an authorization cause.

YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance also recommends using a current encoder version, checking local audio and video and dashboard errors, checking CPU load, and testing outbound internet connectivity. Treat these as checks for an unhealthy stream or connection problem, not as proof of why an authorization request was rejected. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Next check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg publish attempt is rejected at startup | Confirm that this is an ingest attempt, then check the current Live Control Room key and endpoint. | Try a newly issued key and update the encoder; verify the URL and RTMP/RTMPS scheme. |
| FFmpeg reports an SSL error or connection timeout | Check whether the selected endpoint is RTMPS and whether the URL uses the rtmps scheme. |
Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions, including its port 443 suggestion for the specified SSL-error or timeout cases; do not treat that as a universal 403 fix. |
| An API request returns 403 with a named detail | Identify the API operation and exact returned error detail. | Resolve the permission or resource-state condition indicated by that detail. Do not apply ingest troubleshooting as though it explained the API response. |
| YouTube shows stream-health warnings after ingest | Inspect Live Control Room health information or the API stream’s health status. | Check the reported codec, audio/video input, rates, frame settings, encoder version, CPU load, and outbound connection as relevant. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not go live from a camera.
