For 720p at 30 fps, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 (with 3 Mbps listed as the minimum) or 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 (2 Mbps minimum). Those are encoder settings—not a guarantee that an Indian 4G hotspot can sustain the upload. Test the connection where and when you will stream, run a realistic stream test, and lower bitrate or resolution if YouTube reports unstable delivery.
Which bitrate should you set for 720p?
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives these 720p settings:

The codec matters: don’t apply the AV1/H.265 figure to an H.264 encoder. YouTube lists the same codec-specific bitrate values for 720p60 as for 720p30. That does not mean either frame rate is best for every stream; choose based on the movement in your program and what your connection can sustain in a test. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance explains that recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

The recommended bitrate is the encoder’s video-data rate, not an India-wide upload-speed target or a promise of reliable streaming. YouTube’s minimum is likewise a setting threshold, not proof that a connection measuring that speed will reliably carry a stream set to the recommended bitrate.

There is no single upload rate guaranteed across Indian 4G hotspots. Capacity can vary with the specific connection, place, and time. A brief speed-test peak cannot establish that the connection will hold steady throughout a live broadcast. Test the actual hotspot at the intended streaming location and, if possible, near the event time.

Configure the encoder and test before going live
- Choose your output. Set 1280 × 720 at 30 fps as a sensible starting format for a 720p30 stream. Select H.264 or AV1/H.265, then use the corresponding YouTube recommendation only if testing shows the hotspot can sustain it.
- Set bitrate control to CBR. YouTube’s listed encoder settings include constant bitrate (CBR).
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. Use the stream key and connection details supplied by YouTube’s live setup; keep the stream key private.
- Run a realistic test. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing before starting the live stream. Include audio and movement similar to the planned event, and test from the hotspot and location you will actually use. A static screen or a test from another network may not represent the event.
- Check stream health and adjust. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, encoder settings are detected; YouTube recommends default resolution and frame-rate detection, while manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key. Monitor stream health and messages during the test and broadcast. If delivery is unstable, lower bitrate and/or output quality, then test again.

Use YouTube’s health feedback rather than assuming that a configured bitrate proves the video is reaching YouTube smoothly. Recheck at the location and time the stream will run.
- A speed test looks good but the live test buffers: a single speed result does not establish sustained streaming capacity. Trust the live health feedback and test with representative audio and motion.
- Your encoder is set to H.264 but uses the AV1/H.265 recommendation: use the H.264 figures in the table, or select a supported codec and apply its corresponding recommendation.
- You are deciding between 30 and 60 fps: YouTube lists the same bitrate recommendations for 720p30 and 720p60 in its table. Choose according to the content’s motion and the result of a realistic test, not an assumption that one has a lower official bitrate.
