Neither ads nor Super Chat is guaranteed to earn more. Ads generate revenue when YouTube serves monetized ad impressions; Super Chat generates revenue when viewers choose to pay to highlight a chat message. For your 24/7 stream, compare the revenue YouTube attributes to each feature over the same period in Analytics. Generic CPM figures cannot tell you which will earn more on your channel.
How the two revenue sources work
Ads depend on eligible views and ad delivery
On a monetized live stream with monetization enabled, YouTube automatically turns on pre-roll and display ads. Mid-rolls can be inserted automatically or manually. An ad slot is not guaranteed to serve: some viewers may not receive an ad and can continue watching. Ad delivery can vary with factors such as viewer location, ad targeting, Premium status and whether an ad is available. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance explains these controls and limitations.
Super Chat depends on viewers choosing to pay
Super Chat lets eligible viewers pay to highlight a message in live chat; Super Stickers are paid animated stickers. These features depend on audience willingness and ability to purchase, rather than the number of ad impressions. YouTube says fan-funding features are not crowdfunding or donation tools, so it is more accurate to call Super Chat paid fan support than a donation. Eligibility includes being in the YouTube Partner Program, being at least 18, and living in a region where the feature is available; individual features may have additional criteria. Why there is no universal winner
A stream with many viewers receiving monetized playbacks may earn more from ads. A smaller but highly engaged community with viewers willing to buy highlighted messages may earn more from Super Chat. Those are outcomes suggested by how the features work, not a universal ranking: YouTube’s official guidance does not publish a channel-independent comparison or a dollar forecast for 24/7 streams.

The creator’s share also differs by revenue type. YouTube’s partner earnings overview says creators receive 70% of net revenue from Super Chat and related Commerce Product features, and 55% of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on their content Watch Page. These are the stated shares under the respective modules, not a prediction of total earnings; check the modules and terms applicable to your channel. How to compare your 24/7 stream in Analytics
- Choose the same time window for both sources. Use a period long enough to reflect your stream’s usual audience and schedule, and avoid comparing unlike periods if viewership or programming changed substantially.
- Find live-stream ad revenue. In YouTube Analytics, use the Live filter to view ad revenue for live streams and replays. YouTube documents this breakdown in its live-stream monetization guidance.
- Compare it with Super Chat revenue for that window. Use the feature-specific revenue figures rather than total channel income. YouTube says Analytics separates estimated ad revenue from estimated revenue across all revenue types; its ad revenue analytics guide explains the distinction.
- Keep the comparison like-for-like. If you compare different weeks or months, account for changes in audience size, schedule and viewer geography. Note whether you changed ad settings or the stream’s content during one period.
- Decide based on the attributed amounts. Compare the estimated ad revenue with the Super Chat amount for the same period. Do not treat a broad channel RPM as a direct ads-versus-Super-Chat result.
CPM and RPM are not interchangeable with take-home comparisons
CPM is what advertisers pay before YouTube’s share, so multiplying CPM by views does not estimate your creator revenue: not every view receives an ad, and ad delivery varies. RPM is a post-revenue-share metric per 1,000 video views, but it combines sources such as ads, YouTube Premium, memberships and Super Chat. It is therefore not a clean comparison of ads against Super Chat. YouTube defines these measures in Understand ad revenue analytics.

Ad settings that can affect the comparison
Automatic mid-rolls
YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls and offers low, medium and high frequency choices. Its system does not necessarily show ads to every viewer at the same time. YouTube says automatic mid-rolls temporarily pause for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats or Stickers, and are snoozed for everyone during high-engagement moments.
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour for channels that enabled live automatic mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not. This was a platform-reported average across 207 countries in January 2024. It is a comparison of mid-roll settings—not ads versus Super Chat—and is not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

Scheduled and manual mid-rolls
You can choose scheduled breaks at 6, 12, 18, 24 or 30-minute intervals, or insert mid-rolls manually. YouTube cautions that earnings potential may be lower with scheduled or manual settings than with automatic mode. Consider viewer experience as well as revenue: frequent interruptions may not suit every stream or audience.
YouTube also notes that a Stream Deck can be used to insert ads by downloading its YouTube plugin. It is an optional control device, not a requirement for monetization or evidence of higher earnings. See the YouTube instructions.

Eligibility and interpretation checks
- Confirm monetization status. Ads require a monetized channel and monetization enabled for the live stream. Fan-funding features have their own program, age and regional requirements.
- Check the revenue module and terms. The published Watch Page and Commerce Product shares apply to different modules; your applicable agreement governs your channel.
- Separate attribution from causation. A change in revenue between periods may coincide with a setting change, but audience size, geography, ad availability and purchasing behavior can also change.
- Do not assume a 24/7 schedule guarantees more revenue. Continuous availability is not the same as continuous monetized viewing, ads served or purchases.
