There is no bitrate that suits every Indian broadband connection. For a 24/7 stream, choose a YouTube live-encoder target your connection can sustain, then leave upload headroom for network fluctuations and other traffic. A practical starting point is 1080p30 H.264 at 14 Mbps if the stream has about 17.5 Mbps of stable upload capacity available under typical network load. If it does not, consider 720p30 H.264 at 8 Mbps, which calls for about 10 Mbps with the same headroom.
Those upload figures are planning calculations, not India-wide broadband guarantees or separate YouTube thresholds. Measure the upload path used by your encoder; an advertised plan speed or a brief speed-test peak does not establish that a connection can hold a stream around the clock.
YouTube live bitrate targets by resolution, frame rate, and codec
YouTube’s live-encoder recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. These are ingestion bitrates for a live encoder—not recommendations for uploading a prerecorded video. The figures below are from YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| Live format | AV1 or H.265 target | H.264 target |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
Use an AV1 or H.265 target only if your encoder, streaming workflow, and YouTube ingest are compatible with that codec. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 and recommends RTMPS. It also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers.

How much upload speed to leave for the stream
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused. For a simple planning estimate, divide the target stream bitrate by 0.8. This gives the following minimum planning margins; it does not mean the connection is guaranteed to remain stable at those speeds.
| Stream target | Approximate stable upload capacity to reserve |
|---|---|
| H.264 1080p30 at 14 Mbps | 17.5 Mbps |
| H.264 720p30 at 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1/H.265 1080p30 at 10 Mbps | 12.5 Mbps |
| AV1/H.265 720p30 at 6 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
The arithmetic applies YouTube’s 20% guidance to its bitrate recommendations; YouTube does not publish these calculated figures as India-specific thresholds. Shared household use, concurrent uploads, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, and ISP congestion can all reduce the bandwidth actually available to the encoder. YouTube also cautions that download speed is often higher than upload speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Choose a bitrate that can survive normal network conditions
Start with the picture you need
For a general 24/7 channel, compare 1080p30 with 720p30 before considering 60 fps or 4K. At the same codec, YouTube’s targets are higher for 1080p than 720p, and higher for 60 fps than 30 fps in the formats shown. A lower setting that remains stable is a better operational choice than a higher setting the connection cannot consistently sustain.
Measure outbound upload where the encoder will run
- Test upload from the actual streaming location, ideally while the encoder is connected to the network you intend to use.
- Repeat tests at different times and during ordinary household or office network use. Look for consistently available upload, not the highest result from a single test.
- Prefer a wired connection where practical. It can avoid some local Wi-Fi interference, but it cannot fix insufficient ISP upload capacity or congestion upstream.
- Compare the stable upload available to the stream with the planning margin for your chosen target. If results fluctuate or other devices share the connection, choose a lower bitrate or allow more headroom.
Do not infer upload capacity from the plan label
A broadband plan advertised with a large Mbps figure may emphasize download speed. Check the actual outbound path available to the encoder. A plan label, one speed-test result, or a temporary peak cannot establish that a 24/7 stream will be stable.

Preflight the stream before relying on it around the clock
- In your encoder, set the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the YouTube live target you selected.
- Set bitrate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to two seconds; keep it at four seconds or less. Use RTMPS when your encoder and workflow support it.
- Run a representative private or unlisted test with the expected video and audio. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages rather than judging only by the encoder’s local preview.
- Repeat the test after changing the ISP, router, network connection, encoder, or stream settings. A result from a different setup may not reflect the current upload path.
- For a 24/7 channel, decide how someone or a monitoring process will detect a dropped stream and how it will be restored. YouTube’s published guidance covers testing and network preparation; it does not establish an India-specific uptime guarantee or a universal power-backup requirement.
YouTube’s stream settings and latency context are described in Manage live stream settings. Recheck YouTube’s current encoder guidance when configuring or materially changing a stream.
Common bitrate and connection problems
- The stream drops frames or reports poor health: the target may be too high for sustained upload, or the connection may be fluctuating. Test under normal network load, reduce bitrate or resolution, and check the Live Control Room’s health feedback.
- A speed test looks fast but the stream is unstable: a short test can miss congestion, jitter, packet loss, or competing traffic. Repeat tests at different times and assess upload stability at the encoder, not just a peak result.
- The advertised broadband speed seems sufficient, but upload is not: the plan figure may describe download rather than upload. Measure outbound capacity and leave the recommended headroom.
- AV1 or H.265 will not work in the chosen setup: use a codec supported by the complete encoder-to-YouTube workflow. H.264 is another supported option with its own recommended target.
- A wired connection does not resolve the issue: Ethernet may help with local Wi-Fi interference, but it cannot overcome insufficient ISP upload, upstream congestion, or a power interruption.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the channel plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode the video. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
