For a YouTube Live animated loop with frequent scene changes, start with CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), and a bitrate matched to your codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. Test a representative section of the animation before going public, then watch stream health during the broadcast.
These settings help YouTube receive a steady feed; they do not guarantee a flawless stream. Your encoder and internet connection must sustain the chosen output, especially when the image changes often.

Recommended settings at a glance
| Setting | Starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS, where available | YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. |
| Codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 | YouTube lists these as supported ingestion codecs; encoder support varies. |
| Rate control | CBR | A constant bitrate gives the ingest connection a steadier data rate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | This is YouTube’s published guidance. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Automatic detection by default; otherwise match the source and use a supported mode up to 60 fps | Manual choices should reflect the video and encoder capacity. |
| Bitrate | Use YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate | Keep enough upload headroom for a reliable connection. |
For SDR video, YouTube also gives guidance for square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709, and 8-bit color. Its stereo audio guidance is AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations alongside your encoder’s available options.
Choose a bitrate for the actual output
The numbers below are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measured minimums or guarantees for a particular animation. Select the row for your output and codec, then confirm that your upload connection can sustain it reliably. Frequent scene changes can make compression more demanding than a largely static image, so include representative movement in your test rather than assuming a quiet opening scene is sufficient.

| Output | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These examples cover only the listed modes. For another resolution or frame rate, consult YouTube’s current table instead of extrapolating. YouTube recommends running a speed test; a connection that barely reaches the selected bitrate may be vulnerable to fluctuations. If the encoder offers 30 fps and the animation does not need smoother motion, 30 fps is a reasonable starting choice, but that is a practical recommendation, not a special YouTube rule.
Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and keyframes
Resolution and frame rate
YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need to choose these manually, create a custom stream key and turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. Use a resolution and frame rate your source and encoder can produce consistently; raising either increases the amount of video data to encode and send.

Codec and protocol
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported ingestion options, and recommends RTMPS. Choose a codec your encoder supports and pair it with the corresponding bitrate recommendation. Do not assume every encoder exposes every protocol or codec.
Keyframe interval and rate control
Set keyframes every 2 seconds, and keep the interval at or below 4 seconds. Use CBR rate control. Together, these settings provide a sensible baseline for YouTube ingest; they do not compensate for an encoder that cannot keep up or an unstable upload link.

Test scene changes before going public
- Prepare a representative test segment. Include the animation’s normal audio and the kinds of scene transitions, motion, and visual detail that occur during the loop.
- Apply your selected encoder settings. Use CBR, the appropriate bitrate from YouTube’s table, and the 2-second keyframe interval. Confirm the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and RTMPS setting where available.
- Test before the public broadcast. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
- Check the result in YouTube’s live control room. Review stream health and any messages while the encoder is sending. If the feed is unstable, investigate connection reliability and encoder load before increasing quality.
- Monitor the live broadcast. Keep checking stream health and messages, particularly after startup and around demanding scene changes.
Choose latency and DVR for a loop
For a prerecorded loop with no audience interaction, low latency is usually less important than smooth playback. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering and matters less when the creator is not interacting with viewers. YouTube says 4K/2160 streams do not offer the low-latency optimization option and use normal latency.
DVR allows viewers to pause, rewind, and resume. Decide whether that viewing behavior suits the stream. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers latency, DVR, stream keys, and reusing prior settings.

Reuse and protect your stream key
A stream key is the credential that tells the encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept the stream. You can create a custom key for reuse. YouTube also offers an option to reuse prior stream settings, which copies the earlier metadata, settings, and stream key.
- Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the associated stream.
- If you think it has been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it. Replace the old key in the encoder with the newly generated one.
- When reusing earlier settings, check the copied metadata and other settings before starting the next broadcast.
Ways to keep a prerecorded loop running
The right setup depends on whether you want to manage an encoder yourself, avoid leaving equipment running at home, or use dedicated streaming hardware. The official YouTube encoder directory describes capabilities, but it does not provide a consistent pricing comparison or establish current commercial terms for the listed services.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health reports instability or the stream buffers | Upload reliability, encoder load, and whether the bitrate is appropriate for the selected mode | Run a speed test, verify the encoder can sustain the settings, and use a lower supported output mode if the connection cannot reliably carry the chosen bitrate. |
| Image quality falls apart during scene changes | Whether the test included the animation’s busiest transitions and whether the selected codec and bitrate match the output | Retest with representative movement; use YouTube’s recommendation for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than tuning against static scenes alone. |
| YouTube does not accept the feed | Stream key, ingest protocol, codec, and encoder configuration | Confirm the encoder is using the intended key and a supported protocol and codec. If the key may be compromised, reset it and update the encoder. |
| Manual resolution or frame-rate options are unavailable | Whether you are using a custom stream key and have enabled manual settings under Stream Resolution | Create a custom key and turn on manual settings there, or use YouTube’s recommended automatic detection. |
| Viewers report buffering at low latency | Whether low latency is necessary for a non-interactive loop | Consider normal latency; low latency may increase buffering and is less useful when you are not interacting with viewers. |
| A 4K stream cannot use low-latency optimization | The stream’s 4K/2160 output mode | YouTube says 4K/2160 streams use normal latency rather than the low-latency optimization option. |
