For a 1080p aquarium loop sourced at 30 fps, start with H.264, CBR, RTMPS, a 2-second keyframe interval, and 14 Mbps video bitrate. YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for 1080p30 H.264, but its recommended bitrate is the more useful target if your upload connection can sustain it. Match the stream’s frame rate to the video, test the complete setup, and plan separately for YouTube’s limits on archiving and DVR for streams longer than 12 hours.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for 1080p
YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked in 2026, is a starting point—not a guarantee that your internet connection, encoder, or source will deliver a stable stream. For an ordinary SDR aquarium feed, configure the encoder as follows. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists supported protocols and codecs, bitrate recommendations, and video and audio settings.

| Setting | Starting point for 1080p30 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps | Use 30 fps when the source is 30 fps. For a 60 fps source or a deliberate preference for smoother motion, see the 1080p60 figures below. |
| Video codec | H.264 | YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1; use them only if your encoder supports them reliably. |
| Video bitrate | 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum | YouTube’s H.264 figures for 1080p30, checked in 2026. These are platform ingestion recommendations, not a measured guarantee for your connection. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use constant bitrate output. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Protocol | RTMPS preferred | YouTube recommends the encrypted RTMPS connection to its servers. |
| Color and bit depth | Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR | Appropriate starting settings for a standard SDR feed. |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz; 128 Kbps | YouTube’s listed settings for stereo audio. If the aquarium feed has no audio, do not add music unless you have the necessary rights. |
For 1080p60 H.264, YouTube’s settings page lists 17 Mbps recommended and 6 Mbps minimum, also checked in 2026. A 60 fps output is not automatically better for a static or slow-moving scene: choose it when the source and the desired rendering justify the additional bitrate and upload capacity.

Choose 30 fps or 60 fps based on the source
Use 1080p30 for a 30 fps source
If your aquarium recording is 30 fps, 1080p30 is a sensible starting point. A lower-motion scene may look good at 30 fps, but that is an editorial choice rather than a YouTube requirement. Avoid converting a 30 fps source to 60 fps on the assumption that it creates new motion detail.

Use 1080p60 when the footage calls for it
Choose 1080p60 if the source was recorded at 60 fps or you specifically want smoother motion and can sustain the higher recommended bitrate. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended figure rises from 14 Mbps at 1080p30 to 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Test the actual upload path under representative conditions before relying on it continuously.
Set up YouTube Live and test the stream

- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube Live Control Room before configuring a long-running broadcast.
- Prepare the encoder. Select RTMPS where available, then configure H.264, CBR, the appropriate 1080p frame rate and bitrate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. For standard SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit output; if sending stereo audio, use 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Enter them in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it, or expose it in a recording or screenshot.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that video and audio are arriving correctly and inspect stream health before making the stream public or depending on it.
- Test with representative footage and sound. Include the aquarium movement, scene changes, and any audio you expect to use. Run a test stream before committing to a continuous broadcast, and verify that the upload connection remains stable at the chosen bitrate.
- Monitor the stream after launch. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and check that the encoder continues sending. A bitrate value within YouTube’s recommendation does not by itself prove that your connection can sustain it.
YouTube supports software encoding; its general live guidance describes software encoders and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. A dedicated hardware encoder is optional, not a requirement for an ordinary aquarium loop. See YouTube’s guidance on encoder settings and its encoder workflow information.
Plan for replay and rewind limitations
A continuous 24-hour broadcast is not a reliable way to guarantee a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. If preserving the footage matters, record it locally and decide how you will retain or publish that recording rather than relying on the live archive. See YouTube’s “Archive live streams” guidance.

Use aquarium footage and any accompanying sound for which your channel has the necessary rights. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. It may replace the stream with a placeholder and can interrupt or terminate it if the matched material remains. If YouTube archives the stream, a Content ID claim may also be made after the broadcast ends. YouTube’s livestream terms require providers to have the necessary rights for live content. If you seek YouTube Partner Program monetization, the channel and stream are subject to YouTube’s monetization policies. YouTube says content should be original and authentic rather than mass-produced or repetitive; its policy page notes a clarification dated July 15, 2025. That standard does not determine the outcome for any particular aquarium stream. Your footage, presentation, channel context, and meaningful creative or educational value can all matter. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

YouTube receives no signal
- Check that you copied the current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room and entered both in the encoder.
- Confirm that the encoder is running and configured to send to YouTube using RTMPS when available.
- Verify channel eligibility and check whether YouTube Live Control Room shows a restriction or setup warning.
The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health
- Check whether your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate; YouTube’s recommended values are not a guarantee about your connection.
- Run another test with the same footage and settings. If the connection cannot sustain the recommended bitrate, address the upload path or test a lower bitrate while staying at or above YouTube’s listed minimum for the selected H.264 resolution and frame rate.
- Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and ensure the output frame rate matches the source where possible.
The picture looks less smooth than expected
- Check the source frame rate and encoder output. A 30 fps recording sent at 60 fps does not contain the original scene’s missing frames.
- If the source is 60 fps and you want smoother motion, test 1080p60 and make sure the connection can sustain YouTube’s 17 Mbps recommended H.264 bitrate.
The replay is missing or viewers cannot rewind far back
- Do not assume a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived; YouTube says it may not be captured at all.
- Keep a local recording if you need an archive, and account for the possibility that DVR rewind will be limited or unavailable on a stream of that length.
The live broadcast is interrupted over content
- Review rights for every video, sound recording, and other included material. Remove third-party content you are not authorized to use; a live match can prompt a placeholder, interruption, or termination.
Or let it run in the cloud
