YouTube Live Says Keyframes Are Too Far Apart: OBS Fix for Indian Creators

Set OBS keyframes to a 2-second interval, verify timing against frame rate, and test the stream health message before broadcasting.

If YouTube Live reports that your keyframes are too far apart, set OBS to send a keyframe every 2 seconds. In OBS’s Advanced Output configuration, set Keyframe Interval to 2, or enable the option to enforce the streaming service’s encoder settings if that option is available in your current setup. At 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames. This is an encoder setting; you do not need to buy a camera, capture card, router, or encoder to correct it.

What the warning means

YouTube’s error guidance describes the warning as: “Your encoder is sending keyframes too often or not often enough.” A keyframe is a complete reference frame in the video stream; the encoder uses other frames to describe changes between these reference points. The warning is about the timing of those keyframes, not a setting for your camera or internet plan.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its troubleshooting guidance says to set the interval to 2 seconds. An interval that is too long can contribute to buffering, and an ingestion error can mean the delivered stream’s GOP size differs from what an encoder setting appears to specify.

Set the OBS keyframe interval to 2 seconds

Use Advanced Output settings

  1. In OBS, open Settings, then Output.
  2. If your output configuration offers Output Mode, select Advanced and open the Streaming section.
  3. Set Keyframe Interval to 2. The OBS setting may be expressed in seconds; check the unit shown in your current version before changing it.
  4. Apply the change and close Settings. If you use a different output mode or the field is not available, check whether your current configuration offers an option to enforce streaming-service encoder settings; enable it if appropriate.

The Advanced Output path and the enforcement option are practical pointers from an OBS community answer published in 2017, not confirmation of the current labels in every OBS version or encoder configuration. OBS’s available controls can depend on the output mode and encoder, so use the labels visible in your installed version rather than assuming every setup has an identical screen.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Keep the interval aligned with frame rate

The target is a two-second interval, not one fixed number of frames for every frame rate. At 30 fps, 30 frames per second × 2 seconds = 60 frames. If you change the frame rate, the number of frames in a two-second interval changes too. Set or enforce the interval in seconds where possible, and verify the resulting timing against your frame rate.

Test the stream before the broadcast

  1. Start a test broadcast before the event, using representative audio and movement rather than only a static screen.
  2. Check YouTube Live’s stream health and read its messages while the test is running. A value displayed in OBS is not, on its own, proof that YouTube is receiving the intended keyframe timing.
  3. If the warning remains, re-check OBS’s output mode, selected streaming encoder, and keyframe controls. Then follow the specific message in YouTube Live Control Room; ingestion errors can affect the GOP size YouTube receives.

What Indian creators should know

YouTube’s general encoder guidance applies here; the guidance cited does not establish a separate keyframe interval for India. The warning by itself is not evidence that a creator’s location or local connection requires a different interval. Use the two-second target, then diagnose any remaining stream-health messages on their own terms.

Common causes and fixes

What you see What to check
The warning appears as soon as the stream starts Confirm the streaming output’s keyframe interval is set to 2 seconds, or that the available service-setting enforcement option is enabled.
You changed the frame rate recently Re-check the interval at the new frame rate. A two-second interval corresponds to 60 frames at 30 fps, but the frame count differs at other frame rates.
OBS shows 2 seconds, but YouTube still warns Confirm you edited the active streaming output and encoder, not a different output configuration. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and inspect its exact message; the value shown in OBS does not prove delivery.
The warning accompanies buffering or other ingestion errors Use YouTube’s specific Live Control Room message to guide diagnosis. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can result in incorrect GOP sizes, so do not assume the interval field is the only possible cause.
