If YouTube Live or your encoder rejects a stream key, first copy the current key and matching server URL from the Live Control Room event you intend to use. Paste them into the encoder’s corresponding fields, start the encoder, and wait for the preview before clicking Go live for a scheduled stream. If the key is current, check the URL and protocol, then use YouTube’s stream-health message to distinguish a connection problem from a media-format error.
“Pre-recorded stream key” can mean a video file being played through an encoder, or software scheduling prerecorded content. The right fix depends on the encoder and the exact error; the phrase alone does not identify the cause.

First, identify where the failure happens
A rejected key is not enough information to diagnose the fault. Note the complete error text and whether the encoder reports that it connected. An encoder startup error points first to the key and encoder configuration. If YouTube receives the feed and then reports a stream-health or ingestion error, troubleshoot the specific message instead of repeatedly changing the key. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide describes the encoder startup issue; its live streaming error messages page covers errors after a feed reaches YouTube.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Encoder says key rejected or fails at startup: recopy the key for the intended event and confirm the server URL.
- SSL error or connection timeout: verify RTMPS settings, port, and encoder support.
- YouTube connects but reports a format problem: check the stream-health message and the video/audio encoding.
- YouTube will not let the channel start a live stream: confirm the channel meets live-stream eligibility requirements.
Copy the key and URL for the correct event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Stream and open the stream or scheduled event you intend to use.
- Copy that stream’s key into the encoder’s Stream Key field. Copy the associated server URL into the encoder’s server or stream URL field; do not assume a key from another event is the right one.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, start the event there by clicking Go live once the preview is ready.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its Manage live stream settings help page. Keep the key private. YouTube allows a custom stream key to be reused, but if the key has been reset, any encoder using the old value must be updated with the current one. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission.

Check RTMP versus RTMPS and the server URL
A valid key paired with the wrong destination or protocol can still fail to connect. If you selected an encoder’s YouTube RTMPS preset, use that preset and enter the key if prompted. For manual setup, retrieve the RTMPS URL from the lock icon in Live Control Room’s Stream URL field, then enter that exact URL in the encoder. The interface may display an ordinary RTMP URL by default, so check which protocol the encoder is actually using.

Follow YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions rather than guessing or combining a URL from one event with a key from another.
If YouTube receives the feed, check its format message
A feed can reach YouTube and still fail a media-format check. For YouTube’s Incorrect stream format error, set video encoding to H.264 and audio encoding to AAC. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval no longer than four seconds. See the official error and encoder guidance.

Do not choose a bitrate from a generic example without checking your resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity. YouTube publishes bitrate ranges that vary by resolution and codec; use the range for your actual output settings in its encoder guidance. A key change will not correct an incompatible video or audio format.

What to do if the key is still rejected
- Copy the current event key again, especially if someone may have reset it, and replace the value stored in the encoder.
- Check that the URL belongs to the same Live Control Room stream settings as the key.
- Record whether the error occurs before connection or after YouTube displays an incoming preview; use that distinction to choose between credential/transport checks and stream-health checks.
- If you use an encoder that signs in to YouTube without asking for a key, follow that software provider’s support guidance. YouTube directs users of keyless third-party sign-in integrations to the software provider.
- If the encoder schedules prerecorded media itself, consult its documentation for that workflow. The general YouTube encoder instructions do not establish compatibility for every encoder or scheduling feature.
For a useful follow-up diagnosis, note the encoder or software name and version, the complete error text, whether YouTube shows an incoming preview, and whether this is a scheduled Live Control Room event or another prerecorded-video workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an encoder that must stay running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
