Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a YouTube Live product demo, use OBS Media Source when you need to play one supported audio or video file in a scene. Choose VLC Video when the demo needs a playlist, with controls for order, shuffle, looping, and what happens when the source is hidden. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed, with 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. OBS documents their features, but does not publish a head-to-head performance comparison.
Which OBS source fits your demo?
| Decision | OBS Media Source | VLC Video |
|---|---|---|
| Best documented fit | Play an individual media file in a scene. | Play media items as a playlist in a scene. |
| VLC installation | The OBS documentation does not state a VLC dependency. | VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS. Match the architecture: 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. |
| Playlist controls | No playlist capability is described in the OBS documentation. | Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist controls are available. |
| When the source is not visible | Restart playback when the source becomes active and close the file when inactive are configurable. | Choose whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when hidden; restart-on-visible behavior is configurable. |
| Media support | OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM video, plus MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV audio. | Uses VLC libraries for extended media support. OBS does not promise that every VLC-compatible file or codec will work. |
OBS describes VLC Video as allowing a playlist “similar to an Image Slideshow.” That playlist capability is the clearest reason to choose it over Media Source for a multi-clip demo. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

Set up a single-file demo with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the demo.
- In the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source. Give it a recognizable name and select OK.
- In the source properties, select the local media file. Check the source options for playback behavior: the documented defaults are Restart playback when source becomes active: On, Close file when inactive: Off, and Show nothing when playback ends: On.
- Arrange and resize the source in the preview, then confirm it is visible in the intended scene.
- Run a short test: play the file, confirm its picture and sound in OBS, and test the scene changes you plan to use during the demo.
For a single supported file, this is the simpler documented feature match. If the demo consists of several clips that should play as a playlist, use VLC Video instead.
Set up a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC before opening the source picker in OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC; otherwise VLC Video may not appear.
- In OBS, select the demo scene. In the Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Add the media items to the playlist and arrange them in the required order. OBS also provides a shuffle option if the demo should play items in a varied order.
- Set Loop Playlist according to whether playback should start again after the final item. The documented default is loop on; shuffle is off.
- Choose what playback should do while the source is not visible. The documented defaults stop playback when hidden and restart it when visible. Change these if your scene sequence requires playback to continue or pause instead.
- Check framing and audio in the preview, then test the playlist through the scene transitions you expect to use. Confirm the intended order, end-of-playlist behavior, and hidden-source behavior before going live.
These are OBS documentation defaults, not universal recommendations: for example, a demo that returns to a clip after switching scenes may need different visibility behavior from one that should restart each time it appears.

Test the full YouTube Live scene before the demo
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings before streaming. For a product demo, include the media source in that check rather than testing only the stream connection.
- Confirm the correct scene and source are selected.
- Play the file or playlist and verify that video appears and audio registers in OBS.
- Switch away from and back to the source to verify its configured visibility behavior.
- For a playlist, check item order, shuffle state, looping, and what happens at the end.
- Make a short test stream or recording before the scheduled demo so you can catch problems without relying on the live presentation.
OBS’s source documentation describes features and controls, not measured differences in speed, CPU use, latency, reliability, or image quality between Media Source and VLC Video. Choose based on the workflow and controls you need, not an assumed performance advantage.
