YouTube Live Pre-Recorded Stream Has Black Bars: How to Fix the Aspect Ratio

Black bars can come from the video itself, the encoder’s canvas, or player presentation. Diagnose the source, choose a deliberate aspect ratio, and preview before going live.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a pre-recorded video has black bars on YouTube Live, first check whether the bars are already inside the video file. If they are, crop or reframe the source before streaming; if not, check the encoder’s output canvas and how it fits the video to that canvas. For a standard horizontal stream, YouTube recommends 16:9. Its player adapts to a video’s dimensions and the viewer’s device, so a border in the player is not always a fault in the source.

Find out where the black bars come from

Open the original video outside YouTube and inspect it at its original dimensions. This distinguishes padding that is part of the picture from borders introduced when the streaming setup places the picture on its output canvas.

  1. The bars are visible in the original file: they are baked into the video image. Crop or reframe the media to remove them, then export a version sized for the canvas you intend to stream.
  2. The original fills its frame, but the live preview has bars: check the encoder’s output canvas and the source’s fit, fill, or crop behavior. Set the canvas to the intended aspect ratio, then adjust how the source is placed within it.
  3. The bars appear only on some screens or in the YouTube player: compare the video on another device and inspect the actual stream image. YouTube’s player adapts to the video shape and device, so presentation can differ without black padding being embedded in the source.

YouTube recommends avoiding black bars embedded directly in the video because they interfere with dynamic player sizing. The player cannot remove black pixels that are part of the uploaded or streamed image. YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance explains its adaptive player behavior and recommends 16:9 for standard computer playback.

Choose the output aspect ratio and resolution

For a conventional horizontal stream

Use a 16:9 output canvas for standard horizontal presentation. YouTube lists these 16:9 examples: 1920×1080 (1080p), 1280×720 (720p), and 854×480 (480p). The source should fill the canvas unless you deliberately want a letterboxed layout. These are format examples, not a guarantee that every source will look good at every resolution.

Look in your editor or encoder for the output or canvas dimensions, and separately for the source’s fit, fill, scale, or crop setting. Exact menu names vary by application; YouTube’s general guidance does not establish one universal settings path. Its live-stream settings guidance also recommends 16:9 for best live video quality. Manage live stream settings.

For vertical or other non-16:9 footage

A vertical or unusually shaped source is not automatically defective. If you want it to fill a horizontal 16:9 frame, you must choose a layout: enlarge and crop the image, or place it over a designed background. Cropping can cut off important content; a background preserves the full image but leaves unused space around it. Alternatively, use a vertical presentation where your Live Control Room workflow supports it. YouTube describes horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats, including a center-cropped vertical option for applicable workflows. Choosing vertical output will not remove bars that are already baked into the source. YouTube’s live-stream overview.

Check encoder geometry and preview before going live

After setting the canvas and source layout, check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before starting the event. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends square pixels and progressive scan; use these as geometry sanity checks, not as an assumption that either setting caused the bars. Preview the stream and monitor its quality as it runs. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance and YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

  • Confirm the output canvas is the intended ratio, typically 16:9 for horizontal video.
  • Check that the media source is fitted or cropped as intended and that no blank canvas is exposed.
  • Inspect the actual live preview, not only the editor’s thumbnail or project view.

Common causes and fixes

What you see Likely place to check What to do
Bars are visible in the original file Source video pixels Crop or reframe the video, then export it to the intended canvas.
Original is full-frame; stream preview has bars Encoder output canvas or source placement Set the output ratio and adjust fit, fill, or crop so the source covers the canvas.
Bars vary by player or device Player presentation and source shape Check the underlying stream image and compare devices; YouTube adapts its player to the video and device.
Vertical footage looks cropped or padded in a horizontal stream Layout choice Choose a deliberate crop, background layout, or supported vertical workflow.

If the controls in your app differ, identify its output-canvas and source-fit/crop settings rather than looking for a universal YouTube menu label. YouTube documents encoder options and pre-recorded streaming functionality, but the exact steps depend on the application or service you use. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
