YouTube Live Keeps Disconnecting While Looping a Video: Causes and Fixes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A video looping in OBS or another encoder does not, by itself, prove that the loop is disconnecting your YouTube Live stream. First check whether the encoder reports a disconnect or rising dropped frames, then read YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health error. Compare that time with the video’s loop point: a repeatable match is a clue to inspect the media source, while failures at other times point you toward the encoder or outbound connection.

First identify which part of the stream is failing

A live stream has separate playback, encoding, ingest, and viewer paths. The evidence tells you where to troubleshoot:

What you observe What it suggests What to check next
The encoder stays connected, but one viewer has trouble The issue may be local to that viewer. Ask whether other viewers see the same problem and whether affected viewers share a network.
YouTube reports problems for viewers on one shared network A network shared by those viewers may be involved. Compare reports from viewers on other connections.
Viewers on different connections report trouble, or Live Control Room shows an encoder-related error The encoder or the feed reaching YouTube may need attention. Check the encoder’s status, sources, CPU load, settings, and connection.
The encoder shows rising dropped frames or loses its ingest connection The connection to the remote ingest server may be unstable, or the configured bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain. Review the encoder log and test outbound connection quality.

YouTube Live Control Room displays stream health and timestamped errors, which it classifies as critical or moderate and accompanies with guidance. Record the exact message and time before changing settings; it is more useful than a general report that the stream “dropped.” YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guidance also recommends considering how many viewers are affected and whether they share a network.

Check whether the disconnect really coincides with the loop

Note the time the file ends, starts again, and the time the encoder or YouTube reports a problem. Repeat this observation during a test if it is safe to do so. Consistent timing makes the media source worth investigating; it does not establish that looping caused the disconnect.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In OBS, a local Media Source has a Loop option that repeats the file when playback completes. The VLC Video source can loop a playlist. Those controls describe playback behavior, not a rule that the stream should disconnect at a loop boundary. OBS’s source documentation is dated January 11, 2022, so labels or details may differ in newer versions. Check OBS’s Media Sources documentation and verify the controls in your installed version.

  • If the encoder remains connected and the source alone stops, freezes, or changes unexpectedly at the boundary, inspect the file and source configuration.
  • If the encoder disconnects at other times too, prioritize stream-health errors, dropped frames, and network evidence.
  • If YouTube’s live feed remains healthy but only playback is delayed or buffering for viewers, do not assume that latency is an encoder disconnect. YouTube describes latency as the delay between capture and display; lower latency can increase playback buffering. See YouTube’s explanation of live-stream latency.

Troubleshoot in order

  1. Capture the evidence. While streaming, watch the encoder and Live Control Room. Write down the exact YouTube error, its timestamp, whether the encoder reports a disconnect, and whether dropped frames rise. Avoid changing multiple settings before recording what happened.
  2. Compare the timestamps with the loop point. Check whether the source reaches the end and restarts at the same time as the failure. In OBS, identify whether the clip is a Media Source or a VLC Video source and check the relevant loop control. A timing match is a lead, not a confirmed cause.
  3. If you use OBS, inspect its connection evidence. Review the dropped-frame indicator and the connection log around the incident. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Its troubleshooting guide covers configuration, software, hardware, and network factors. OBS’s guide is dated September 30, 2024; check it against your OS and current OBS version before applying platform-specific advice. Read OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.
  4. Check the encoder and outbound connection. Update the encoder software, verify the audio and video sources, check encoder CPU load, and test outbound internet quality. If the feed looks and sounds right inside the encoder but stream health is poor, investigate the connection to YouTube. If a connection test finds a problem, YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider. Follow YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
  5. Compare relevant RTMP/RTMPS settings. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). Choose quality your connection can sustain, and test with movement and audio similar to the real stream. These are published recommendations, not proof that a setting mismatch caused your particular failure. Use the error message to decide which setting, if any, needs changing. See YouTube’s encoder-setting recommendations.
  6. Test one change at a time. Use a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate. YouTube recommends testing before going live; change one relevant setting, then check whether the error and timing recur. Test encoder failover before an event, not as an improvised fix during a live broadcast.

Use failover as preparation, not a live-stream fix

YouTube recommends testing encoder failover before an event. Its suggested test is to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable and confirm that the backup behaves as intended. Do this during a planned test, not while trying to repair an active broadcast. Read YouTube’s guidance on encoder failover.

Protect the stream key and check archive expectations

Your stream key is the credential and address information your encoder uses to send a feed for YouTube to accept. Treat it as private; do not publish or share it. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video looping on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

When the cause is still unclear

The available clues cannot identify one universal cause for a loop-related disconnect. To narrow it down, collect your encoder name and version, operating system, the exact Live Control Room message and timestamp, the encoder’s connection status and log, and whether the failure repeats exactly at the loop boundary. Those details determine whether the next step belongs in the media source, encoder, or network path.
