Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →OBS usually stops showing a video in a 24/7 YouTube stream because the media file reached its end without looping, a source’s visibility or scene behavior interrupted playback, or a VLC playlist is misconfigured or unavailable. If the video still plays in OBS but YouTube reports dropped frames or disconnections, the problem is more likely the connection to YouTube’s ingest server—not the media source.
First identify what “stops” means
Check OBS’s preview or a local recording, then compare what you see with YouTube’s stream health. These are different failure paths: a blank or frozen OBS preview points toward local playback or source settings; continued playback in OBS alongside dropped frames or disconnections on YouTube points toward the outgoing connection or bitrate.
| What you observe | Check first | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The video stops at the end, or a playlist finishes | Repeat settings | For a Media Source, check Loop; for a VLC Video Source, check Loop Playlist. OBS Media Sources |
| Playback changes after switching scenes or hiding a source | Source visibility behavior | Check the VLC source’s visibility behavior and test with the source kept visible. OBS Media Sources |
| OBS preview or recording freezes or turns blank | Local source and media file | Confirm the source type, file path and playback settings. OBS Media Sources |
| OBS keeps playing, but YouTube reports dropped frames or disconnections | Connection to YouTube ingest | Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance for instability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting |
| The broadcast ran, but its YouTube archive is missing or incomplete | Archive-duration limits | Check YouTube’s guidance and keep a local recording backup for long broadcasts. YouTube: Archive live streams |
Check the source type and its repeat setting
OBS has two relevant source types, and their controls differ. A Media Source plays a local media file. A VLC Video Source can play a playlist and uses VLC libraries; OBS says VLC must be installed for the VLC source to be available. Don’t assume a setting for one source type applies to the other. See OBS’s media-source documentation.
For one local video: enable Loop
- In OBS, open the scene containing the video and select its Media Source in the Sources list.
- Open the source’s Properties.
- Enable Loop so the file starts again when playback completes.
- Check the source’s file path and test playback through the end of the file.
Show nothing when playback ends controls what the source displays after completion; it does not make the file repeat. If a video ends and the source goes blank, check Loop rather than treating that display option as a repeat control. The exact labels and options can vary with OBS version and source type.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a playlist: check VLC Video Source
- Confirm VLC is installed; OBS identifies it as a requirement for the VLC Video Source.
- Open the VLC Video Source’s Properties and confirm the playlist contains the intended media files.
- Check that every listed file path still points to an available file.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the playlist should start over after its last item.
A playlist that reaches its final item is not necessarily a stream-connection failure. Fix its playlist or repeat setting first.
Check whether scene or source visibility interrupts playback
A source can behave differently when it becomes hidden or visible. VLC Video Source visibility behavior can stop, pause, restart or resume playback depending on its configuration. If the interruption coincides with a scene switch, test with the source kept visible. If it must be hidden, choose the available visibility behavior that matches whether playback should continue, pause, restart or resume when shown again. Consult OBS’s documentation for the source options in your version.

If the video is a Media Source rather than a VLC Video Source, inspect that source’s own properties and test scene changes separately. Don’t apply VLC playlist instructions to a Media Source.
Separate local playback problems from dropped frames
OBS describes dropped frames as a connection or bitrate problem between the computer and the remote streaming ingest server. Dropped frames alone do not show that the local video reached its end or stopped playing. OBS says it is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio itself to cause dropped frames; its connection troubleshooting guide focuses on connection stability and whether the connection can keep up with the configured bitrate.

A hardware-decoding option exists for Media Source, but the available documentation does not establish it as a general fix for videos stopping during 24/7 streams. Without the relevant OBS log, version, operating system, source details and a reproducible symptom, it would be guesswork to blame a particular codec, decoder, operating system or OBS bug.
Protect the recording and archive
A stream playing live does not guarantee YouTube will save a complete archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. For a 24/7 broadcast, keep a local recording backup rather than relying on the YouTube archive as the only copy. See YouTube’s archive guidance and its DVR guidance.
