YouTube’s live-streaming guidance does not specify whether to use H.264 Baseline, Main, or High. Choose a profile your encoder and streaming workflow support, then test a representative stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube does specify other live-encoder settings—including CBR, a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and SDR color guidance—which matter more than assuming one H.264 profile is an official preference.
Does YouTube require Baseline, Main, or High for live H.264?
No profile preference is stated in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. It lists H.264 as a supported video codec for RTMP/RTMPS, but does not compare Baseline, Main, and High or give a compatibility matrix. YouTube says it will automatically detect the encoder settings you choose; that statement does not identify a preferred H.264 profile.

So there is no evidence-based universal answer that YouTube Live requires one of these three profiles. Use a profile supported by your encoder and the rest of your workflow. If you have a specific encoder or downstream delivery setup, check its current documentation for profile support and compatibility. YouTube’s live settings page is available at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Set the live-stream parameters YouTube does specify
Profile is only one encoder setting. Match the rest of the stream to YouTube’s published guidance and to the resolution and frame rate you intend to send.

Protocol, codec, and frame rate
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS.
- Video codec: H.264 is supported; YouTube also lists H.265 (HEVC) and AV1.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance covers rates up to 60 fps.
Bitrate and keyframes
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- H.264 bitrate examples: select the row for your target resolution and frame rate. These are YouTube’s published ingestion rates, not H.264 profile recommendations.
| Stream format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube’s H.264 resolution and frame-rate table. They are not a single bitrate to use for every stream; choose the entry matching your output.
Advanced and SDR settings
YouTube’s advanced settings guidance recommends square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. For SDR, it lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit color. Configure only options your encoder exposes and supports; the page does not turn these into an H.264 profile selection.

Do not confuse live H.264 with uploads or HDR
Prerecorded uploads
YouTube recommends H.264 High Profile on its recommended upload encoding settings page. That advice concerns prerecorded uploads, not live H.264 ingest, and does not establish High as YouTube’s live-stream preference.
Live HDR
YouTube’s HDR instructions describe HEVC/H.265. In its OBS workflow, the hardware HEVC encoder profile is Main 10 (with Main shown as the default). Main 10 is an HEVC profile, not H.264 Main. See Stream HDR video on YouTube.

A practical setup and test sequence
- Choose your output format. Decide the resolution and frame rate first, then use the corresponding YouTube bitrate row. For example, 1080p60 has a 17 Mbps recommended H.264 bitrate; 1080p30 has 14 Mbps.
- Set the encoder’s supported options. Select H.264 and a profile available in your encoder and workflow. The YouTube live guidance does not choose Baseline, Main, or High for you.
- Match the published live settings where available. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and the recommended advanced settings your encoder supports. For SDR, set Rec. 709 and 8-bit where applicable.
- Run a representative test before the event. YouTube explicitly advises testing before starting. Check that the intended resolution and frame rate arrive, the stream remains stable, and YouTube reports no stream-health issue.
- Monitor stream health during the event. If the stream is unstable, diagnose the encoder, network, bitrate, and workflow against the observed issue rather than changing profiles on the assumption that YouTube officially prefers another one.
YouTube’s live encoder overview also explains software and standalone hardware encoder workflows: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Troubleshoot profile-related uncertainty
- Your encoder offers several H.264 profiles, but YouTube gives no profile choice: use a profile your encoder and complete workflow support, then test. YouTube’s live guidance does not provide a profile compatibility matrix.
- You found advice to use High Profile: check whether it refers to prerecorded uploads. YouTube’s High Profile recommendation is on its upload-encoding page, not its live H.264 settings guidance.
- You are configuring HDR: verify that you are setting up the HEVC/H.265 HDR workflow. The Main 10 instruction for that workflow does not answer which H.264 profile to use.
- YouTube reports a stream-health problem: review the relevant bitrate, keyframe interval, rate control, and other encoder settings, then test again. Profile alone cannot be diagnosed as the cause from YouTube’s published guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream rather than choosing a profile in a desktop encoder, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
