Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →An ISP changing your public IP does not, by itself, mean you need a new YouTube stream key. The more likely issue to investigate is a brief break in the router’s internet/WAN connection that happened around the same time. Keep your existing YouTube event and encoder settings, check what disconnected, enable and test your encoder’s reconnect behavior, and verify the result with an unlisted test stream before relying on it.
Does a public IP change end a YouTube live stream?
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password and address for sending the feed; its setup guidance does not say that the key is bound to your public IP or must be replaced when that IP changes. A change in address may coincide with a router WAN or authenticated-session interruption, but the available YouTube guidance does not establish that an IP change alone ends a stream.

Use the address change as a clue, not a confirmed cause. Compare the time of the IP change with the router or ONT WAN event log, the encoder’s connection/error log, and the stream-health information in YouTube Live Control Room. If the encoder stayed connected while the public IP changed, that weighs against a simple IP-change explanation; confirm the interpretation with your ISP and encoder documentation.

Reconnect without resetting your stream key
- Keep the existing event and key. In YouTube Studio, open the live stream’s settings and retain the stream URL and stream key currently configured in your encoder. Do not reset the key solely because your ISP assigned a different public IP. YouTube mentions creating a new key as a remedy for certain encoder-start errors; that is a separate condition, not a general response to an IP change. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and its encoder setup instructions.
- Check the encoder’s reconnect setting. Find the reconnect/retry control in the official manual for your specific encoder and version, enable it if appropriate, and note how it behaves after a connection loss. YouTube’s help pages do not specify OBS or other encoder control names, nor guarantee that a particular encoder will rejoin an already-running event after a WAN reset. Avoid relying on generic steps for software you have not identified.
- Check which part of the connection failed. When the stream drops, see whether the encoder reports a lost connection, whether the router/ONT WAN or PPPoE/DHCP session went down, and whether YouTube Live Control Room reports an unhealthy or missing incoming feed. YouTube recommends checking outbound connectivity and contacting the ISP if the connection is problematic: Troubleshoot a YouTube live stream.
- Verify recovery before the real broadcast. Run an unlisted test, monitor the YouTube preview and stream health, then deliberately interrupt the primary connection and observe whether the encoder reconnects and what viewers see. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and preview and checking failover behavior: YouTube live streaming tips.
Plan for a visible interruption: successful reconnection does not guarantee uninterrupted playback or continuation of the same broadcast. Test the exact encoder, router and YouTube event configuration you plan to use.

Diagnose the interruption from the evidence
Record timestamps from all three places—the router/ONT, encoder and YouTube Live Control Room—then line them up. YouTube identifies connection reliability, upload bandwidth and encoder health as relevant troubleshooting factors. If the encoder appears healthy but the stream still has a problem, outbound internet connectivity is one possibility; YouTube advises checking it and contacting the ISP if tests show an issue.
- Router or ONT records a WAN/session drop: Ask the ISP whether the WAN, PPPoE or DHCP session dropped at that time and whether it was expected.
- Encoder reports a connection loss while the router remains online: Check the computer’s network path, encoder logs and outbound connectivity; the public-IP change may be coincidental.
- Encoder remains connected but YouTube reports a problem: Check Live Control Room stream health and the encoder’s output settings, then use YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
- No useful logs are available: Reproduce the issue during a test stream and note the exact times, symptoms and any address change. Ask the ISP and encoder provider to interpret their respective logs.
Check upload capacity and stream settings
YouTube advises matching the stream bitrate to available upload bandwidth and leaving headroom; shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to the streaming device. Use YouTube’s current encoder table rather than a remembered bitrate: recommended ranges depend on codec, resolution and frame rate and can change. YouTube also recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. Check YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings and bitrate guidance before changing settings.

A wired Ethernet connection, where supported, can reduce Wi-Fi-related variability. It will not prevent your ISP from resetting the WAN session or changing the public IP. YouTube’s broader advice is to prioritize a reliable connection and test the setup.
What to ask your Indian ISP
Contact the provider that serves your specific connection; the available sources do not establish a universal Indian ISP rule for dynamic public IPs, CGNAT or static-IP availability. Ask narrowly:

- Did the router’s WAN, PPPoE or DHCP session drop at the time of the stream interruption?
- Is this connection assigned a dynamic public address, or is it behind provider-side NAT?
- Does this plan offer a public or static IP option, and what conditions or charges apply?
A TRAI-hosted response by Derick Thomas, dated 20 January 2016, argued that customers needing a public IP should receive one without charge. That was a respondent’s position in a consultation, not a binding current TRAI rule or proof of what any particular ISP offers today: the historical consultation response.

| Approach | What to assess | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| One ISP connection with tested encoder recovery | Upload capacity under real conditions, router and encoder logs, and the recovery behavior observed in a test | A WAN interruption can still make the broadcast visibly drop; reconnect is not a promise of uninterrupted playback. |
| Independent backup internet path | Whether the backup uses a genuinely separate access network/provider, its real upload capacity, failover interruption, encoder support and total cost | A second path does not guarantee seamless switching. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover, which is not proof that a particular router or ISP setup will automatically fail over. |
YouTube’s recommendation to test a backup encoder is distinct from verifying internet-path failover. Test the full arrangement you intend to use, including what YouTube event and viewers experience when the primary path is interrupted.
