For a spare Intel PC running OBS, start with Intel Quick Sync H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the bitrate YouTube recommends for your chosen resolution and frame rate. First confirm the Intel processor graphics are enabled and QSV is available in OBS; then test the actual scene and internet connection before relying on the stream.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for Quick Sync
For a typical SDR stream, use H.264 with Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV). YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, but H.264 is a practical starting point for this setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed settings for every PC or connection. The bitrate you choose must be sustainable on your upload connection, and the right resolution depends on the content and available upload capacity. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations can change; check its current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when configuring a stream.
Rate control, keyframes, and audio
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 is supported. YouTube’s advanced recommendations include stereo AAC at 128 Kbps.
- SDR image: YouTube’s advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709, and 8-bit SDR.
These advanced options may not all appear in every OBS QSV encoder or driver combination, and their labels can vary. Set the options your encoder exposes without assuming a particular OBS version has an identical menu.

Check whether the spare PC can use Quick Sync
OBS’s published hardware-encoding guidance documents Intel Quick Sync support on Windows and Linux with Intel HD Graphics on Core-i processors from generation 2xxx (Sandy Bridge) onward. OBS recommends generation 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because earlier QSV iterations had lower quality. This is a compatibility baseline, not a promise that an older PC will deliver acceptable results for your content.
Quick Sync depends on processor graphics being enabled. Intel notes that installing a separate graphics card does not make QSV available if the processor’s integrated graphics have been disabled. OBS also explains that hardware encoders can offload work from the CPU to a dedicated GPU component; earlier-generation encoders may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding.

Before opening OBS
- Identify the Intel processor generation and confirm it has processor graphics.
- Check firmware settings to ensure integrated or processor graphics are enabled, particularly if a separate GPU is installed.
- Install an appropriate Intel graphics driver and check that it is current for the system.

- Choose the QSV encoder. In OBS, select an Intel Quick Sync H.264 encoder if one is available. The exact setting location and label depend on the OBS build and platform; OBS documents QSV on supported Intel graphics on Windows and Linux.
- Set output for your target. Choose the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream, then set the encoder to CBR and the bitrate from YouTube’s H.264 recommendations above. Use a two-second keyframe interval.
- Set the destination and stream key. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s streaming configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it in a recording. Use RTMPS where available.
- Check the upload connection. Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions and leave headroom rather than assuming a speed-test peak will be sustained. Other household or office traffic can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Include movement and audio similar to the intended broadcast, start the encoder, and review stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Fix warnings before the event.
YouTube recommends testing before going live with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. An encoder is useful for activities such as sharing a screen, broadcasting gameplay, using external audio or video hardware, or managing a more complex production; those are possible uses, not additional requirements for a basic stream. Test for stability and protect the stream
Validate the whole path, not just the encoder
A PC may show QSV as available and still fail a real broadcast because of driver issues, scene complexity, upload instability, or audio configuration. Use the same scenes, movement, and sound you expect to use live. Watch YouTube’s stream health during the test and confirm that the stream remains stable at the selected bitrate and frame rate.
Respect copyright and YouTube policies
Having a working encoder does not grant rights to the music, video, or other material in a broadcast. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s rules for live streams and reused content before broadcasting. A private test can help verify technical delivery, but it does not establish that the content is cleared for public use or monetization.

Troubleshooting Quick Sync and stream health
