YouTube Live Encoder Settings for a Continuous 1440p Gaming Replay Channel

For 1440p60, YouTube recommends 24 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 34 Mbps for H.264. Set CBR and two-second keyframes—and keep sessions under 12 hours if you need an archive.

For a 1440p60 YouTube gaming stream, use a 24 Mbps video bitrate with AV1 or H.265, or 34 Mbps with H.264. Set the encoder to CBR, use RTMPS where supported, and set a two-second keyframe interval. For 1440p30, YouTube recommends 15 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 21 Mbps for H.264. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations—not a guarantee that your connection or hardware can sustain them. Most importantly for a replay channel, do not rely on one uninterrupted stream lasting more than 12 hours: YouTube says it may not archive a stream that long.

Recommended YouTube settings for 1440p gaming

Choose the row that matches your target frame rate and encoder codec. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, up to 60 fps. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended ingestion settings for conventional SDR video.

Setting 1440p60 1440p30
AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate 24 Mbps 15 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 minimum bitrate 6 Mbps 5 Mbps
H.264 recommended bitrate 34 Mbps 21 Mbps
H.264 minimum bitrate 8 Mbps 7 Mbps
Bitrate mode CBR CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds 2 seconds
Protocol RTMP or RTMPS RTMP or RTMPS

Source: YouTube Help: encoder settings for live streaming. Use the recommended bitrate as the target rather than the listed minimum. RTMPS encrypts transport and is YouTube’s recommended protocol where available. A nominally fast connection is not enough if it is unstable or shared with other traffic; choose settings your actual upload connection can sustain, then test before relying on the stream.

Configure the encoder for a gaming replay

  1. Set the video format. Choose 2560 × 1440 output at either 60 or 30 progressive frames per second, matching the bitrate row above. The higher frame rate can preserve smoother motion, but it also raises encoding and upload demands.
  2. Select a codec your encoder and hardware support. If using AV1 or H.265/HEVC, use the corresponding recommended rate; if using H.264, use its higher recommended rate. Do not assume a codec is available simply because YouTube accepts it.
  3. Set rate control to CBR. Enter the matching recommended bitrate. The minimum figures in the table are not the quality target.
  4. Set keyframes to every two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  5. Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it. RTMP is also listed for ingestion. Copy the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room into the encoder’s stream configuration, and keep it private: anyone with access to the key may be able to send video to your channel.
  6. Check advanced SDR options if exposed by your encoder. YouTube’s guidance includes square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 color, and 8-bit depth. Encoder labels and availability vary; hardware support must be checked.
  7. Configure audio deliberately. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. For 5.1 audio, its guidance is AAC over RTMP/RTMPS at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
  8. Run a representative test. Include gameplay-like motion and the audio you plan to stream. Check Live Control Room’s status messages and real-time analytics, and confirm the stream remains stable before leaving it unattended.

Settings reference: YouTube encoder settings and YouTube verified encoders. The verified-encoder list is a starting point, not a guarantee that a particular option suits a PC gaming workflow. Compare codec and frame-rate support, encoding workload, unattended recovery, and whether you can make a separate local recording.

Plan the replay archive separately from the live stream

A live broadcast and its saved replay are separate outcomes. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, including 1440p and 2160p streams, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining the replay matters, split continuous programming into sessions shorter than 12 hours and keep an independent local recording.

YouTube’s archive guidance states: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Live DVR is not the same as a saved replay

DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live broadcast. On very long streams, rewind capabilities may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours; viewers also cannot seek to a point before the broadcast began. A local recording protects your own copy independently of both live DVR and YouTube’s post-stream archive. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.

Keep a local backup

YouTube recommends a local archive backup. It can be recorded to local storage or another suitable destination; the required capacity depends on recording bitrate and how long you intend to retain footage. An external drive is one possible storage option, not a YouTube requirement. Check that the recording is actually being written and that the destination has room before leaving a long session running.

Troubleshoot common 1440p stream problems

  • Live Control Room reports unstable health or dropped frames: The chosen rate may exceed what the connection can sustain, or the upload path may be fluctuating. Test at a lower recommended frame-rate/codec combination and monitor the health messages; do not treat a speed-test result as proof of sustained streaming stability.
  • The stream looks soft or breaks up during motion: Confirm output is actually 2560 × 1440, the frame rate is the intended 30 or 60 fps, and bitrate is set for the selected codec. Test with fast gameplay movement, not only a static screen.
  • The encoder cannot select AV1 or H.265: Codec support depends on the encoder and hardware. Use a supported option, such as H.264, and apply that codec’s recommended bitrate rather than selecting an unsupported codec in theory.
  • The stream connects but viewers cannot rewind far enough: Long-stream DVR limits are distinct from whether YouTube later creates an archive. Viewers cannot rewind to before the live event began, and rewind may be limited on very long broadcasts.
  • The broadcast ends but there is no YouTube replay: Check the event duration. YouTube warns that a stream over 12 hours may not be captured; use shorter sessions and a local recording when preservation is important.
  • Audio is absent or incompatible: Verify the encoder’s audio device and output format, then use the recommended stereo AAC or MP3 settings where available. If sending 5.1, use AAC and the specified 48 kHz, 384 Kbps guidance.
  • The encoder stops while unattended: Check the encoder, computer, power, and network for failures, and monitor Live Control Room. If using a continuous-service option, verify its recovery behavior and local recording workflow rather than assuming every encoder recovers automatically.
