For a stable 24/7 YouTube Live feed, start with RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval and a bitrate matched to your resolution, frame rate and codec. Leave upload headroom, test with representative video and audio, and monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. For a prerecorded channel, also plan for rights checks, interrupted connections and YouTube’s limits on archiving very long streams.

Recommended YouTube Live encoder settings

These are settings for the encoder’s live ingest to YouTube, not recommendations for encoding a video file before upload. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into formats for viewers; the encoder’s job is to deliver a stable signal. YouTube’s help pages do not state publication dates for these settings.

Setting Starting point
Ingest protocol RTMPS, when your encoder supports it. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. YouTube encoder settings
Video codec H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1, subject to encoder support. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265; AV1 is not supported for HDR on the cited settings page.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate).
Frame rate Up to 60 fps. For prerecorded material, preserving the source frame rate is a practical choice unless you intentionally need to convert it; YouTube states the maximum but does not prescribe a native-frame-rate rule for this use.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Stereo audio AAC or MP3; YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo.
5.1 audio AAC, 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
SDR advanced settings Square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR.

Use SDR settings unless you specifically need HDR. Encoder labels and menus vary by software, so match the values rather than expecting identical names in every app. See YouTube’s encoder settings reference and its live streaming setup guidance.

What bitrate should you use?

Choose a bitrate based on codec, resolution and frame rate. The following are YouTube-recommended live ingest bitrates, not upload-file encoding targets. The cited YouTube help table does not display a publication date.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 recommended H.264 recommended
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps

For example, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate. Its network guidance recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Applying that margin to a 14 Mbps feed gives a planning target of about 16.8 Mbps available upload capacity; this arithmetic is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. YouTube’s bitrate table · YouTube streaming tips

Choosing between 720p and 1080p

Use the highest resolution that your source and connection can sustain reliably. Compare the source’s actual detail and movement, encoder support, stable upload capacity with headroom, and the playback experience you want. A higher resolution is not automatically better if the connection cannot maintain its bitrate.

Choosing H.264, H.265 or AV1

YouTube publishes lower recommended ingest bitrates for AV1/H.265 than for H.264 at the listed settings, but the right choice depends on whether your encoder supports the codec and can encode it reliably. YouTube’s table does not establish a universal quality or cost advantage for a particular channel.

Configure and test the stream before running it continuously

  1. Set the ingest details in your encoder. Choose RTMPS if available, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and set the codec, CBR, frame rate, resolution and 2-second keyframes. Keep the key private: anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your stream.
  2. Budget for upload capacity. Measure upload performance where the encoder will run, then leave the recommended 20% margin above the stream bitrate. Include any simultaneous backup or additional feeds in the calculation. YouTube’s separate simulstream guidance gives a 1.5–2× upload-speed target for multiple streams; that advice is specifically for simulstreaming, not a universal single-stream requirement. YouTube streaming tips
  3. Test representative material. Include the kinds of motion and audio that will actually appear in the channel. YouTube says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Check the preview and stream-health messages before relying on the setup. YouTube encoder settings
  4. Monitor Live Control Room. Watch stream health after launch as well as during the test. A bitrate that works in a short test can still be affected by network changes over a longer run.
  5. Decide how the feed recovers. Determine what the encoder does if its source playlist ends or its computer, power or network fails. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring, but does not prescribe a playlist scheduler, automatic restart system, redundant connection or 24/7 service guarantee. Those depend on your encoder and hosting setup.
  6. Choose latency for the use case. A prerecorded channel usually does not need real-time interaction. YouTube notes that lower latency may increase playback buffering; prioritize stable playback unless audience interaction is important. YouTube latency guidance

Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?

Do not count on a complete YouTube archive for a continuous 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Long streams may also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind. Keep a separate local recording if a durable archive matters, and plan the broadcast’s operating segments around the archive and rewind behavior you need. Copyright and monetization for a prerecorded channel

Clear the rights for every part of the playlist

Make sure your rights cover each video, soundtrack and other included material for the planned live use. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation on Google services, including music licensing rights. YouTube livestream terms and conditions

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A match may replace the broadcast with a placeholder; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license does not necessarily prevent interruption: YouTube says a channel may need to be added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. Copyright issues with live streams

A 24/7 loop is not automatically monetizable

YouTube’s monetization policy update of July 15, 2025 clarified that “repetitious content” is called “inauthentic content” and includes repetitive or mass-produced material. The policy says channels should offer original, authentic content with creative, educational or other value. Monetization assessments apply to the channel, so the format alone cannot establish whether a particular channel qualifies. YouTube channel monetization policies

Common encoder problems and fixes

  • Unstable stream health or buffering: the upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce bitrate or resolution, check upload performance at the encoder’s location, and leave the 20% margin YouTube recommends.
  • Video looks poor despite a high bitrate: check that the encoder is using the intended resolution, frame rate and supported codec, and that the source itself contains the detail you expect. YouTube transcodes the feed for viewers.
  • Audio is missing or wrong: verify that the encoder is sending an audio track and that the chosen format and sample rate match the intended stereo or 5.1 configuration.
  • Stream key or connection does not work: recheck the server URL and current key in Live Control Room, confirm the encoder is configured for the selected ingest protocol, and keep the key private.
  • Broadcast is interrupted by a rights match: remove or replace the matched material, confirm live-use rights, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where you are licensed.
  • No complete archive or full rewind afterward: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. Keep a local archive when continuity matters.
  • Feed stops when the playlist ends or a machine loses power: configure the playlist and recovery behavior in your encoder or hosting arrangement; YouTube does not prescribe a 24/7 restart architecture.
