If your YouTube live stream is dropping frames, first check which dropped-frame counter is rising in your encoder. Network-dropped frames point to the connection between your PC and YouTube; rendering or encoding lag points to the PC’s workload instead. To test Wi-Fi fairly, compare a realistic stream over Wi-Fi with one over Ethernet from the same PC, keeping encoder settings and network demand as similar as possible.
First identify what kind of frames are being dropped
In OBS, open the statistics or status panel and note which counter increases. The distinction matters: changing Wi-Fi will not fix a PC that cannot render or encode frames quickly enough.

- Network dropped frames: OBS says these indicate that the connection to the remote service is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. This is the counter to investigate when testing Wi-Fi.
- Rendering lag or missed frames: The PC is not preparing frames on time, often because of rendering or GPU workload. Follow OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting rather than treating this as proof of a Wi-Fi problem.
- Encoding lag or skipped frames: The encoder is not encoding quickly enough. This is also a performance issue, not evidence by itself that the network is at fault.
OBS treats connection drops and encoding performance as separate troubleshooting areas. Its connection guidance notes that “WiFi may be unstable for streaming,” which is a reason to test the connection—not proof that every Wi-Fi network is unsuitable. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Check the stream settings and upload headroom
Before testing, write down the video bitrate, codec, resolution, and frame rate configured in your encoder. Check the corresponding row in YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations; the recommended bitrate depends on all three video settings, not just resolution. For H.264, YouTube currently recommends 8 Mbps at 720p60 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. These are encoder-bitrate recommendations, not Wi-Fi signal thresholds or guarantees that a stream will reach YouTube without interruption.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate. Its guidance also warns that other people or devices using the same network can reduce bandwidth available to your stream. Account for any primary or backup stream bitrate that applies to your setup, as well as concurrent household or office use. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
A speed test from the streaming PC is useful for checking outbound upload at that moment. Run it while noting what else is using the network, and repeat under conditions that resemble the broadcast. A single result measures a moment, not the stability of the complete route from your PC through the router and ISP to YouTube’s ingest service. A fast download result, or strong Wi-Fi bars, does not establish that the stream’s upload path is stable.

Compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet from the same PC
- Keep the test settings fixed. Use the same PC, encoder, bitrate, codec, resolution, and frame rate for both runs. Record concurrent network use so the comparison is meaningful.
- Run a representative test over Wi-Fi. Use a private or unlisted broadcast if appropriate. Include audio and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube specifically recommends a pre-live test that resembles the real event.
- Watch both the encoder and YouTube. Note whether OBS’s network dropped-frame counter rises and whether YouTube Live Control Room reports stream-health messages. YouTube’s health indicators can help distinguish ingest or configuration issues; Google documents their meanings in Configuration Issues for LiveStream Resources.
- Repeat over Ethernet if feasible. Connect the same PC to the router by cable and repeat with the same encoder settings and similar network demand. The useful comparison is the change in network drops and YouTube stream health—not peak download speed or the Wi-Fi icon.
- Interpret the difference cautiously. If Ethernet is clean while Wi-Fi drops frames, the Wi-Fi segment may be contributing. That does not identify every cause or guarantee that a cable will solve the issue; the router, ISP, or route to YouTube may still matter.
What to do with the test result
Wi-Fi is worse than Ethernet
Reduce competing traffic during the stream, improve the PC’s connection to the access point, or use Ethernet if practical. The wired comparison is diagnostic; buying a cable cannot fix upstream congestion or an unstable ISP route.

Both Wi-Fi and Ethernet show network drops
Compare the configured bitrate with stable upload capacity and the 20% headroom guidance. Check router or modem connectivity and consider whether other network activity is competing for upload. OBS also lists VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, network drivers, router connectivity, and Wi-Fi among areas to investigate. These are possibilities, not guaranteed causes; change one factor at a time and repeat the test.

Network drops stay at zero, but the picture is still choppy
Return to the rendering and encoding counters. Reduce GPU load, or lower output resolution or frame rate if the PC cannot sustain the current workload. Use OBS’s performance troubleshooting steps; a clean network counter makes Wi-Fi a less likely explanation for choppiness.

If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a different approach from diagnosing or improving the Wi-Fi used by a live encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud loops the uploaded video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
