On YouTube Live, “cue points” usually means places to show mid-roll ads. YouTube calls the feature mid-roll ads; you can let YouTube place them automatically, schedule breaks, or insert them yourself in Live Control Room. A Stream Deck is optional—manual controls are built in.
What “cue points” mean on YouTube Live
YouTube’s documented term is mid-roll ads, not cue points. A mid-roll break is an opportunity for an ad to appear during a live stream. Turning on a break does not guarantee that an ad will run: YouTube decides whether to fill each slot, and viewers continue watching if no ad is served. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

Choose how to place mid-roll breaks
For a monetized stream, YouTube offers automatic, scheduled, and manual mid-roll approaches in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends automatic placement. It also says earnings potential may be lower with scheduled or manual placement than with automatic placement; that is platform guidance, not a guarantee of results for an individual channel.
| Approach | How it works | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube recommends and places mid-roll opportunities. | Least hands-on; YouTube controls timing, which can be less suitable around a planned important moment. |
| Scheduled | Set breaks at 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minute intervals. | Provides a recurring cadence, but not precise control over a particular moment. Slots may not serve ads. |
| Manual | Insert a mid-roll when you choose in Live Control Room. | Offers the most direct timing control; you must remember to insert breaks, and none are served if you insert none. |
Set up and start an encoder-based stream
These steps apply when you use streaming software or hardware that sends a video feed to YouTube. You do not need an encoder or a physical cueing device just to insert manual ad breaks; Live Control Room has manual mid-roll controls. YouTube describes encoders as useful for screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video equipment, and more complex productions, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events.

- Enable live streaming. Verify your channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility requirements.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one in Manage if you want to promote the event and let viewers set reminders. Follow YouTube’s encoder-stream setup instructions.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder’s server and key fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your event. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then check picture and sound before selecting Go live. For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours beforehand and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event.
- Check playback and end cleanly. Confirm the event is available on your channel and watch pages, including on mobile, and monitor audio and video. When finished, stop the stream in YouTube and the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Turn on monetization and insert or schedule breaks
- In Live Control Room, open the stream’s monetization controls and turn on monetization. For monetized live streams, pre-roll and display ads are automatically on.
- Choose automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-rolls. If scheduling, select an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. If you choose manual placement, use the mid-roll control in Live Control Room when you want to offer an ad break.
- For automatic placement, use Delay ads when an important segment is about to begin. It delays automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes; a five-second countdown appears before they resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while Delay ads is enabled.
- If you need to step away, use Take a Break to set a temporary away screen for one, three, or five minutes. The break does not end automatically when the countdown reaches zero; end it in Live Control Room. You can configure an away overlay there or, with a compatible encoder, add it as a browser source. The overlay does not mute your audio sources, so mute the microphone before leaving.
For exact current controls and availability, consult YouTube’s live-stream monetization help page; interface labels and integrations can change.
Monetization beyond ad breaks
Ads are not the only possible live-stream revenue path. YouTube also lists Super Chat and Super Stickers in Live Chat, plus channel memberships. Availability depends on channel eligibility and the relevant feature requirements. Stream ad revenue for live broadcasts and replays can be reviewed in YouTube Analytics with the Live filter. YouTube’s monetization guidance also states that ads are turned off for an embedded live player with autoplay.

Use built-in controls or a Stream Deck
You can manually place breaks directly in Live Control Room without buying extra hardware. YouTube also documents an Elgato Stream Deck plugin option for inserting ads. That can suit a desk-based production where you want a physical button, but it adds device and plugin setup; check current model and plugin compatibility before buying. Neither approach guarantees that YouTube will serve an ad when a slot is opened.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- No live option or stream creation is unavailable: confirm the channel is verified, has no live restriction in the previous 90 days, and has completed first-time live enablement. That initial process can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: verify that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key. If you reset the key, update the encoder with the new one.
- The preview appears but the event is not live: check the preview, then select Go live in Live Control Room. For a scheduled event, start the encoder early enough to allow checks.
- No ad appears after a break: a mid-roll slot is not a promise that an ad will be served. YouTube may leave the slot unfilled, in which case viewers continue watching.
- An automatic ad interrupts a key segment: use Delay ads before the segment to postpone automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. Note that manual mid-rolls still display during the delay.
- Viewers hear audio while the away screen is shown: mute the microphone and other audio sources separately; the overlay itself does not mute them.
