Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to schedule a YouTube live event; use OBS, if you choose it, to encode and send the podcast’s audio and video to that event. Those are different jobs. Scheduling one event does not by itself establish a recurring schedule for future episodes, and the available YouTube guidance does not show that OBS alone can schedule episodes to recur, recover unattended after a failure, or run indefinitely. For a continuous broadcast of uploaded episodes, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is a different option.
Which one schedules the episode?
Live Control Room manages the YouTube event: you can schedule a stream, reuse settings from a previous stream, or create a new one. An encoder such as OBS produces and sends the live media feed to that event. YouTube’s documented workflow therefore uses the two tools together when you want a scheduled event with an encoder-generated feed; they are not interchangeable scheduling alternatives.

A scheduled event can appear as upcoming, and viewers may be able to opt into notifications. That is not the same as setting up a series that automatically creates and starts a new live event for every future podcast episode. The cited YouTube workflow documents event scheduling, not recurring episode automation.
Schedule and start a podcast livestream
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to livestream; streamers must be at least 16. Platform requirements can change, so check YouTube’s current guidance and your channel status before planning an event.
- Create the event in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and use the Manage tab to schedule a stream, reuse a prior stream’s settings, or create a new one. Set the event details and scheduled time in YouTube’s interface. The exact labels and available controls can change.
- Connect the encoder. For an encoder workflow, use the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room in the encoder’s YouTube streaming configuration. The key routes the encoder feed to the intended YouTube destination. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat yours like a credential; reset it in Live Control Room if it is compromised.
- Prepare and preview early. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder well before the event, starting it ahead of the scheduled time, checking the Live Control Room preview, and confirming the event is accessible. Confirm the podcast audio and video before you tell listeners the event is ready.
- Go live and monitor. YouTube’s encoder workflow instructs creators to wait for the preview and click Go live when ready. Monitor audio, video, and stream health while the event runs; an event being scheduled does not confirm that the incoming feed is healthy.
OBS settings: what to set and what to test
The settings depend on the source material, chosen resolution and frame rate, codec, and the upload connection available to the encoder. YouTube recommends choosing settings that the connection can sustain, testing before broadcasting, and monitoring stream health. Its H.264 recommendations include:

These examples are not a universal preset for every podcast. Match the output to the source and connection, then test the actual feed in Live Control Room before the scheduled event. The YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a single OBS configuration, a recurring schedule feature, or an unattended recovery setup that applies to every OBS installation.
What “continuously” means—and what it does not
Scheduling separate episodes
For individual podcast episodes, schedule each YouTube event in Live Control Room and arrange separately how the encoder will be started and stopped for each event. The documented YouTube scheduling workflow does not establish automatic recurrence. Do not assume that scheduling the first episode creates future events or launches OBS for them.

Running a continuous broadcast
YouTube documents encoder auto-start and auto-stop controls, but that does not establish that OBS will restart after a crash, recover a dropped YouTube connection, or keep a feed running indefinitely. Those behaviors depend on the exact OBS version and any automation you configure; verify them in the current OBS documentation and test your own setup before relying on it unattended.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a longer continuous stream will be archived in the same way. If retaining the complete program matters, plan a separate local or other recording workflow and verify the current YouTube behavior for your intended duration.

Reliability and troubleshooting
- No preview in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder is sending to the stream URL and key associated with the scheduled event. Confirm the encoder is running, then wait for the preview before selecting Go live.
- The event is scheduled but no podcast feed appears: Scheduling creates the event; it does not itself start the encoder. Start the encoder ahead of the event and confirm its feed reaches the Live Control Room preview.
- Video or audio is unstable: Check the encoder’s stream health and the upload connection. YouTube recommends a bitrate suitable for the selected output and connection, plus a test before broadcast; lower the output demands if the available connection cannot sustain them.
- The stream drops and does not resume: Do not infer that auto-start or auto-stop provides failure recovery. Check the encoder and connection, restore the feed, and test any restart automation you intend to use before depending on it for an unattended broadcast.
- The stream exceeds 12 hours: Do not rely on the under-12-hour automatic archive statement for a longer stream. Use a separate recording plan and verify platform behavior.
- The stream key may be exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement key.
Equipment and cost considerations
The documented workflow does not require a particular microphone, interface, encoder appliance, or streaming computer just to schedule an event. YouTube says creators do not need expensive equipment to get started; use equipment relevant to the quality and production needs of your podcast rather than treating a purchase as a scheduling prerequisite.
A computer running OBS also means your encoder and connection must remain available for the time you want to send the feed. If you need a continuous loop of uploaded episodes rather than a series of manually managed live events, a cloud workflow avoids relying on a home computer staying on.
