If OBS cannot connect to YouTube Live, first note the exact OBS error and any warning in Live Control Room. For an encoder-start error, YouTube’s first-line fix is to copy a fresh stream key from the relevant Live Control Room stream and replace the key saved in OBS. If the error mentions RTMPS, SSL, or a timeout, check the server URL and connection protocol too: a correct key cannot fix a wrong endpoint. These steps follow YouTube’s official guidance accessed October 3, 2026; it does not describe a separate stream-key procedure for India.
Fix the connection in this order
Change one setting at a time and check whether Live Control Room receives a preview. The stream key is only one part of the connection: OBS also needs the right YouTube service and server URL.

- Record the exact symptom. Note whether OBS refuses to start, times out, reports an SSL or certificate error, or says it is streaming while Live Control Room shows no incoming preview. Save the exact wording and any Control Room warning; “key not working” alone does not identify the cause.
- Copy the current key. In YouTube Studio, open Go live / Live Control Room and select the stream you intend OBS to send to. Copy that stream’s current key. YouTube recommends getting a new stream key and updating the encoder when an error occurs starting a third-party encoder. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
- Replace the saved key in OBS. Open OBS Settings → Stream, select YouTube or the appropriate YouTube RTMPS service, and replace the saved key with the one copied for the selected stream. If the service is configured as a custom server, put the key in the separate stream-key field. Do not paste the server URL into the key field, or the key into the URL field.
- Check the server URL and protocol. With a YouTube service preset, confirm that the selected service is YouTube and that OBS is using its corresponding server setting. For a custom server, copy the stream URL shown in Live Control Room for that stream. For RTMPS or SSL errors, YouTube advises using an RTMPS server URL—not plain RTMP—and checking that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s encoder connection guidance.
- Start OBS and inspect Live Control Room. Start the encoder, then wait for the incoming preview in Control Room. YouTube’s encoder workflow is to start the encoder and wait for the preview before selecting Go live in Live Control Room when ready. If no preview appears, the public broadcast has not been confirmed; continue checking the connection rather than assuming viewers can see it. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Match the fix to the error
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports an error when starting the encoder | Whether OBS has the current key for the selected Live Control Room stream, plus the YouTube service and server setting. | Copy the current key from that stream and replace the saved OBS key; verify the server and service selection. |
| SSL or certificate error | The actual server URL, whether it uses RTMPS, and whether the encoder supports RTMPS. | Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. YouTube suggests trying port 443 for some SSL errors where appropriate; use the endpoint shown for your stream rather than a sample URL. |
| Connection timeout | The selected server URL and RTMPS support in OBS. | Confirm the URL against Live Control Room and confirm the connection protocol. A timeout is not, by itself, proof that the key is wrong. |
| OBS says it is streaming, but Control Room has no preview | Whether OBS is sending to the URL and key belonging to the same selected stream; the exact OBS log and Control Room status. | Recheck both values and capture the exact messages. The symptom alone does not establish one cause. |
| You cannot enable live streaming or create a stream | Channel verification, feature eligibility, restrictions, and any first-time activation delay. | Check YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility and the channel’s Live Control Room notices. |
Check whether the channel is eligible to go live
A correct OBS key and server cannot override channel-level access restrictions. YouTube’s current encoder guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and feature-access guidance.
For computer live streaming in India, YouTube’s India-localized feature-access table associates access with intermediate phone verification and higher daily limits with advanced feature access; the page does not state a numerical limit in the reviewed text. Check the eligibility page in Studio for the status and limits shown for your channel. Mobile live-streaming requirements are a separate workflow and should not be substituted for computer-encoder requirements.

What is specific to India—and what is not
YouTube’s technical troubleshooting and encoder setup instructions are general. The India-localized guidance helps check feature access and daily limits, but the reviewed official instructions do not establish an India-specific OBS setting, stream-key format, ingest host, or regional remedy. Do not assume that geography caused a key, SSL, or timeout error without evidence in the actual OBS and Control Room messages.
If the setup uses account login instead of a stream key
Some encoder integrations connect by signing in rather than by entering a stream key. YouTube treats trouble with that flow separately: contact the software provider’s support team, as the integration may need an update to work with YouTube Live. The key-refresh steps above apply to a key-based OBS setup.
