There is no single setting that fixes every “encoder settings are incompatible” warning. Read the full message in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm whether the stream uses RTMP/RTMPS or HLS, then match the encoder’s video, audio, bitrate, and keyframe settings to that workflow. Use the error-specific advice below rather than changing settings at random.
1. Read the full warning and identify the stream protocol
Open the stream’s details in Live Control Room and note the complete error text, including any codec, format, or bitrate named. The wording matters: YouTube documents several distinct live-stream errors, and the title’s phrasing does not identify one universal cause. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.

Next, check which protocol the encoder is configured to send:

- HLS: Do not apply RTMP assumptions. HLS uses a separate stream key, an HTTPS ingestion URL, and specific segment and playlist requirements; see YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
If you are unsure which protocol is selected, check the stream key and ingestion details in Live Control Room and compare them with the encoder’s destination settings.

2. Match the format and codecs to the error
If the error says “Incorrect stream format,” YouTube’s specific remedy is to change the video to H.264 and the audio to AAC. The error guidance also identifies an unsupported container format, audio codec, video codec, or video codec profile as possible causes. Check each field in the encoder rather than changing only the video codec.
This specific correction is not identical to YouTube’s broader list of supported RTMP/RTMPS encoder formats. Its general guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, plus AAC or MP3 audio. A codec that appears in the general list does not override the corrective instruction for a particular error or establish that the entire combination of codec, profile, container, and protocol is valid.

Check the error and your encoder’s available options before changing advanced fields. The complete, current list is on YouTube’s encoder settings page.

| Ingestion resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommendation | H.264 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Use YouTube’s full bitrate table for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate; it also covers other modes, including 4K, 1440p, 480p, and 360p. Do not extrapolate a value from the examples above.
Compare the encoder’s selected bitrate with the ingestion settings shown for the stream. YouTube notes that if the stream is not using a variable-resolution entrypoint, bitrate must match the exact rate selected on the Ingestion Settings page. If your available upload bandwidth cannot sustain the selected resolution, lower the resolution and choose the corresponding bitrate recommendation.

The built-in cable features 26AWG (2C) + 30AWG (1P) tinned copper conductors, ensuring excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance, enhancing durability, and reducing signal loss
4. Verify keyframes and bitrate mode
For the general RTMP/RTMPS guidance, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, says not to exceed four seconds, and specifies constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Check these settings in the encoder’s output or streaming section; labels vary by encoder.
YouTube also lists audio recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS: stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; 5.1 surround at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Its guidance says 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only for AAC. Apply the audio settings appropriate to your stream and protocol.

5. Treat HLS and HDR as separate workflows
HLS streams
For HLS, create or select a stream key with HLS selected, then use the HTTPS ingestion URL displayed in Live Control Room. YouTube’s HLS requirements include TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Byte-range requests and encryption other than HTTPS are not supported. Ultra-low latency is off for HLS, which has higher latency than RTMP because video is sent in segments. Follow the full HLS setup guidance for your encoder.
HDR streams
HDR has additional format and color requirements, including HEVC and 10-bit video with compatible color characteristics. YouTube’s OBS-specific HDR instructions require OBS version 30.1 or later; that version requirement applies to the OBS workflow, not to every encoder. Its HDR/HLS instructions also call for selecting HLS when using that workflow and leaving manual resolution off. Check YouTube’s HDR instructions for the encoder and protocol you are using rather than treating HDR as ordinary SDR.
6. Test the corrected stream before relying on it
- Make one relevant change at a time, based on the exact warning and protocol. This makes it easier to tell which adjustment addresses the problem.
- Run a preflight test with representative movement and audio, not just a static image or silent feed.
- Check Live Control Room’s stream health and messages while the test is running. If the warning remains, return to its exact details and recheck the format, bitrate, and ingestion settings.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health in its encoder settings guidance.
Common causes and fixes
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| “Incorrect stream format” | Container, video codec and profile, and audio codec. | For this specific error, set video to H.264 and audio to AAC, then verify the container and profile. |
| Bitrate or stream settings warning | Codec, resolution, frame rate, selected ingestion rate, and available upload bandwidth. | Match bitrate to the exact ingestion setting where applicable; otherwise use YouTube’s table for the chosen combination. Lower resolution if the connection cannot support it. |
| Settings appear valid but the warning continues | Whether encoder and Live Control Room use the same stream key, protocol, and ingestion destination. | Confirm those details in both places, then retest and read the full updated message. |
| HLS stream rejected or not behaving as expected | HLS key, HTTPS URL, TS segment duration, rolling playlist, and HTTPS requests. | Use the HLS-specific requirements; do not substitute RTMP settings. |
| HDR stream rejected or incorrect | HEVC, 10-bit output, color characteristics, and HDR workflow settings. | Follow YouTube’s HDR instructions for the encoder and protocol in use. |
