YouTube’s Auto-start & auto-stop setting lets an encoder start or stop a stream when the setting is on; YouTube’s guidance does not describe it as a timer that ends a broadcast after a chosen number of hours. To end a scheduled encoder stream, click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. If you reuse an earlier stream, check its copied auto-stop setting before going live.
What YouTube’s auto-stop setting does
YouTube Help describes Auto-start & auto-stop as a control for starting or stopping streaming from your encoder. It does not document a duration field or countdown that ends a stream after a specified runtime. Do not treat the setting as a way to schedule an automatic shutdown after a number of hours.

This distinction matters for a long-running broadcast: the setting controls how the encoder and YouTube handle starting and stopping, while ending a stream is an action in the stream workflow. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a universal maximum runtime.

- Open YouTube Studio and create or select your stream. Use the stream’s URL and stream key in your encoder, following YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Review Auto-start & auto-stop in the stream settings. Choose the behavior you intend for this broadcast; do not assume it is a runtime timer.
- If you choose Reuse settings, inspect the copied options. YouTube says the previous stream’s auto-start and auto-stop selections are copied when you reuse settings. Confirm they suit the new stream rather than relying on the prior configuration.
- Test before the event and monitor it while live. YouTube recommends testing and watching stream health and messages. Live Control Room displays stream status and duration.
How to end an encoder stream
Scheduled stream
For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s workflow is to click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. Use both actions when ending the scheduled broadcast; stopping the encoder feed alone is not the complete scheduled-stream procedure described in YouTube Help.

Encoder feed
YouTube’s general encoder instructions say to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream. If you are using a scheduled stream, follow the additional Live Control Room step above as well.
Do not confuse auto-stop with archive or DVR limits
YouTube’s archive and DVR guidance describes separate behaviors, not an auto-stop trigger. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Separately, it warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. These statements do not guarantee archiving at or beyond 12 hours, and they do not mean a stream automatically stops at 12 hours.

- The stream starts or stops differently than expected: Review Auto-start & auto-stop in the current stream’s settings. If you reused settings, check the copied selections.
- The encoder has stopped, but the scheduled stream is not fully ended: In Live Control Room, click End Stream and stop sending content from the encoder, as YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow instructs.
- You expected the stream to end after a set number of hours: The cited setting guide does not describe a duration-based auto-stop timer. End the stream using the documented encoder and Live Control Room workflow.
- A very long stream is not archived or viewers cannot rewind: Check the separate YouTube archive and DVR guidance. Automatic archiving is stated for streams under 12 hours; DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours.
- You are unsure whether the broadcast is healthy: Test before going live, then monitor stream health, messages, status, and duration in Live Control Room.
