If your YouTube Live stream buffers while you’re broadcasting over Airtel broadband, first determine whether the problem is the stream reaching YouTube or viewers’ playback. For a creator-side problem, compare the stream’s total outgoing bitrate with sustained upload capacity, leave headroom, and check the encoder’s bitrate, resolution, frame rate, CBR mode and keyframe interval. Wi-Fi, other network users and the encoder can also contribute; the symptom alone does not show that Airtel is at fault.
First identify where the buffering happens
Creator-side ingest trouble
If YouTube’s Live Control Room reports a poor or unstable stream health status, or the stream itself pauses or drops, investigate the connection sending video from your encoder to YouTube. The important comparison is the stream’s total outgoing bitrate against upload bandwidth actually available to the streaming computer.

Viewer-side playback trouble
If the broadcast looks healthy in Live Control Room but only some viewers report buffering, the issue may be on their playback path, device, Wi-Fi or chosen latency mode. Changing your encoder bitrate alone is not guaranteed to fix playback trouble for viewers.
YouTube’s guidance notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. If viewers are affected, test the available latency setting in YouTube’s live stream settings and weigh playback stability against the need for real-time interaction. YouTube also advises viewers with slow internet to use a device within router range and reduce interference. Manage live stream settings · YouTube system requirements and supported devices

Check encoder settings against YouTube’s recommendations
Use YouTube’s recommendation for the exact codec, resolution and frame rate you are sending. The figures below are YouTube Help’s published configuration guidance, accessed in 2026—not measurements of Airtel performance. They are not interchangeable with settings for uploading a recorded video.
| H.264 live configuration | YouTube bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
These are video bitrate recommendations. Allow for audio and any additional outgoing stream when calculating the total your connection must sustain. YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Its full table varies by codec, resolution and frame rate, so consult the current live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance if your configuration is not shown here.

Set bitrate and rate control
- Use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube recommends for live encoding.
- Compare the encoder’s configured video bitrate plus audio and any backup stream with sustained available upload, not download speed.
- If the connection cannot support the selected setting, reduce the bitrate or resolution to a level it can sustain. A lower stable setting is preferable to a higher one that repeatedly exceeds available upload.
Check keyframes, codec and frame rate
- Set keyframe frequency to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube says infrequent keyframes can cause buffering.
- YouTube’s live guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm that your encoder and chosen configuration match the current YouTube guidance.
- For a 30 fps stream, a two-second keyframe interval corresponds to one keyframe every 60 frames; at 60 fps, it corresponds to every 120 frames. If your encoder asks for an interval in frames rather than seconds, set it accordingly.
YouTube’s error guidance states: “Currently, keyframes are not being sent often enough, which can cause buffering.” Check Live Control Room messages as well as encoder settings. Live streaming error messages
Measure upload headroom, not just broadband download speed
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. A download-speed result does not establish that upload capacity is sufficient. Include the primary stream, any backup stream and audio when estimating the outgoing total; other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce what remains for the broadcast.

- Run an upload-speed test from the streaming computer, ideally while other heavy network use is paused.
- Compare the result with the total configured outgoing bitrate. Keep YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom rather than setting the stream at the full measured upload rate.
- Repeat the test at the times you normally broadcast. Airtel notes that speed-test results can vary with time and location; review upload, ping/latency and jitter rather than relying on one result. Airtel internet speed test
Separate Wi-Fi problems from broadband problems
Run comparable tests with the streaming computer connected to the router by Ethernet and over Wi-Fi. YouTube says a wired connection may help; Airtel also recommends checking router placement and configuration. A clear improvement on Ethernet points toward the local wireless path, but it does not prove that Airtel’s wider network is responsible or rule out other causes.
- Keep the computer and test conditions as similar as possible when comparing wired and wireless results.
- Consider distance from the router, interference and other household network use when interpreting Wi-Fi results.
- An Ethernet cable is an optional way to make the comparison; the required cable length and available ports depend on your setup. It cannot correct an ISP-side capacity problem.
If repeated wired tests at relevant times show upload below what your stream needs, contact Airtel broadband support with timestamps, test results and the encoder bitrate you were using. Airtel broadband support

Use a repeatable test before changing settings during a broadcast
- Record your current codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, CBR mode and keyframe interval.
- Test before going live with representative audio and motion. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages while testing, and note the time of any warning or interruption.
- Change one variable at a time. If upload is insufficient, lower resolution or bitrate; if YouTube reports infrequent keyframes, correct the interval; if Ethernet improves results, investigate the Wi-Fi path.
- Repeat at the time of day you intend to stream. A single speed result cannot establish sustained performance at another time.
YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder guidance provide further setup and test advice.
Common causes and what to do
| Symptom or clue | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health warns of insufficient bandwidth or the stream drops | Total outgoing bitrate versus available upload, including other network use and any backup stream | Leave the recommended 20% upload headroom; lower bitrate or resolution if necessary. |
| YouTube reports keyframes are too infrequent | Encoder keyframe interval | Set two seconds, and do not exceed four seconds. |
| Ethernet works better than Wi-Fi | Router distance, placement, configuration and wireless interference | Use the more stable path or address the local wireless conditions; the comparison alone does not establish an Airtel network fault. |
| Only some viewers buffer while stream health is good | Viewer connection, device, Wi-Fi and stream latency mode | Test latency settings against the need for real-time interaction; ask affected viewers to check their playback connection and router range. |
| Wired upload remains below the stream’s needs across repeated tests | Time-stamped upload, ping and jitter results, plus total encoder bitrate | Share the results and broadcast times with Airtel broadband support. |
