For a 4K (2160p) 60 fps YouTube Live feed, use 50 Mbps with H.264 or 35 Mbps with H.265/HEVC or AV1. Those are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest bitrates, not recommendations for encoding a finished video file. YouTube’s minimums are 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for HEVC or AV1. [YouTube Help]
Recommended 4K 60 fps live bitrate by codec
Choose the bitrate that matches the codec your encoder actually sends to YouTube. The figures below come from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, current guidance accessed in 2026; they apply to the incoming live feed.

| Ingest codec | YouTube-recommended bitrate | YouTube-listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
Use the recommended value as your starting point, rather than treating the minimum as the target. The available guidance does not establish a universal quality ranking between these codecs; choose based on what your encoder supports and whether your connection can sustain the required bitrate. Set up the outgoing live feed
1. Confirm codec and resolution support
Set the encoder to 3840 × 2160 resolution and 60 fps, then confirm which codec it will send. YouTube lists RTMP or RTMPS transport and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; it recommends RTMPS. The bitrate must match the selected codec’s row above. [YouTube Help]

2. Use constant bitrate and keyframes
Set rate control to constant bitrate (CBR). Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. [YouTube Help]
3. Allow enough upload capacity
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, and notes that other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to your stream. For one 50 Mbps H.264 feed, that guidance works out to about 60 Mbps of usable upload capacity (50 × 1.2); this is a calculation from YouTube’s recommendation, not a separate YouTube-published threshold. What changes when the video is pre-recorded?
A pre-recorded source does not change the live-ingest bitrate target: configure the outgoing feed sent to YouTube using the live settings above. Do not substitute finished-file upload figures for the live encoder values.

YouTube’s separate finished-video upload recommendations for 2160p at 48, 50, or 60 fps are 53–68 Mbps for SDR and 66–85 Mbps for HDR. Those numbers concern encoding a video file for upload, not sending a 4K60 live feed. [YouTube Help]
For a continuous pre-recorded broadcast, YouTube’s verified encoder list includes Gyre as a cloud option for 24/7 streaming, including 4K at 30/60 fps. The same list includes AWS Elemental MediaLive, a broadcast-grade service supporting live streaming up to 4Kp60 HEVC. These are options, not requirements; check that any encoder or service supports your chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and RTMP/RTMPS workflow. [YouTube Help]
