YouTube Live Bitrate for 1440p 60fps Prerecorded Video

For 1440p60 YouTube Live, YouTube recommends 34 Mbps with H.264 or 24 Mbps with AV1/H.265. Learn the minimums and the encoder and network settings that go with them.

For a 1440p60 YouTube Live stream, set video bitrate to 34 Mbps with H.264 or 24 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. YouTube’s listed minimums are 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These are live-ingest recommendations: the fact that the video was prerecorded does not change the bitrate guidance when an encoder sends it as a live stream.

Recommended 1440p60 YouTube Live bitrates

Choose the bitrate according to the video codec your encoder sends to YouTube. YouTube’s current English-language live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists these figures for live ingestion:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Codec sent to YouTube Recommended video bitrate Listed minimum
H.264 34 Mbps 8 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 24 Mbps 6 Mbps

Source: YouTube Live encoder settings. The minimum is not the recommended target; aim for the recommendation when your encoder and stable upload connection support it. YouTube does not establish in this guidance that one of these codecs will look better for every creator, so compatibility and reliable bandwidth are practical factors in choosing between them.

Why a prerecorded video uses live-ingest settings

If an encoder sends a prerecorded file to YouTube as a live broadcast, YouTube receives an encoded live stream. Use the live-ingest bitrate for the codec and resolution sent by that encoder, rather than substituting the settings for uploading a video file.

  • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

The distinction matters because YouTube separately recommends 24 Mbps for 1440p SDR uploads at high frame rates. That figure concerns encoding a prerecorded file for upload, not live ingestion. Source: YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

Encoder settings that matter

Bitrate mode and keyframes

  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends for live encoding.
  • Keyframe interval: Set 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Codec: Confirm the codec actually sent to YouTube; use the corresponding row in the bitrate table. Encoder menus and available codec support vary, so check the selected output settings rather than assuming the source file’s codec is the ingest codec.

YouTube’s guidance covers RTMP and RTMPS streaming and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, when your workflow supports it. Consult the encoder’s YouTube output settings for the server and protocol options available to your setup.

Upload bandwidth and stability

YouTube advises keeping 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total stream bitrate. For a 34 Mbps video stream, that arithmetic means roughly 40.8 Mbps of available upload capacity before accounting for other traffic. This is an implication of YouTube’s headroom guidance, not a separately published YouTube target. If audio or other streams share the connection, allow for their bandwidth as well.

A connection that briefly reaches the needed speed but fluctuates may still interrupt a broadcast; YouTube notes that network disruptions can break a stream. Use a stable connection and avoid saturating it with unrelated uploads or traffic during the broadcast. Ethernet can be a practical option where available, but YouTube does not require it or specify a particular cable type.

Set up and test the stream

  1. Check the output format. Configure the encoder for 2560 × 1440 resolution and 60 frames per second, then confirm which codec it will send to YouTube.
  2. Set the ingest bitrate. Use 34 Mbps for H.264 or 24 Mbps for AV1/H.265 as the recommended video bitrate; the respective listed minimums are 8 Mbps and 6 Mbps.
  3. Set rate control and keyframes. Choose CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s stated maximum of 4 seconds.
  4. Check the connection. Ensure available upload capacity leaves YouTube’s advised 20% headroom beyond total stream bitrate, and limit competing network use.
  5. Run a representative test. Include audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast, then check YouTube’s stream health and messages before going live. YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

Copyright and prerecorded content checks

Having a prerecorded file does not exempt a live broadcast from YouTube’s rules. Before scheduling or starting the stream, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other included material, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and copyright requirements. This bitrate guidance does not determine whether content is permitted or monetizable, and it does not establish that a particular prerecorded format meets YouTube’s reused-content or monetization policies.
