For a YouTube Live stereo stream, set audio to 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. For 5.1 surround, use 384 Kbps at 48 kHz; with RTMP or RTMPS, 5.1 audio must use AAC. If the warning remains, check its exact wording: bitrate is only one possible cause.

These are YouTube’s recommendations for live encoders, not its separate guidance for uploaded video files. YouTube lists CBR as the bitrate-encoding mode for RTMP/RTMPS. Its HLS setup guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as audio codecs. Check the settings for the protocol you are actually using rather than assuming every codec option applies to every protocol. Identify what the warning is reporting
A Live Control Room audio warning may identify an audio bitrate that is too high or too low, an incorrect sample rate, an unsupported codec, missing audio, or multiple audio streams. These are separate issues: changing bitrate will not fix a sample-rate or codec problem, or audio that is absent or duplicated. Read the complete warning before changing encoder settings. YouTube describes these distinct error types in its live streaming error messages.

Correct the encoder configuration
- Read the precise warning in Live Control Room. Note whether it names bitrate, sample rate, codec, missing audio, or multiple audio streams.
- Confirm the channel format. Choose stereo or 5.1, then set the corresponding YouTube bitrate and sample rate from the table above.
- Match the codec to the protocol. For RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC or MP3 for stereo; use AAC for 5.1. For HLS, check YouTube’s HLS-specific codec guidance.
- Check the audio output itself. Confirm that audio is present and that the stream does not contain extra audio streams if the warning identifies stream count as the issue.
- Test before the event. Send audio and movement similar to the planned program, check the preview and stream health, and review any warnings. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its live streaming tips also recommend monitoring stream health and reviewing messages.
Protocol considerations for a continuous stream
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live delivery. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency, according to YouTube; it also has its own setup requirements. The audio recommendations remain 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz for stereo and 384 Kbps at 48 kHz for 5.1, but configure the codec for the selected protocol. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings and HLS setup guide.

Common causes and fixes
- Bitrate warning: Set the audio bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for stereo or 5.1; do not assume that changing video bitrate addresses an audio warning.
- Sample-rate warning: Check the encoder’s audio sample-rate setting and use 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1.
- Unsupported codec: Verify the ingest protocol and choose a compatible audio codec. RTMP/RTMPS supports AAC or MP3 in YouTube’s guidance, while 5.1 over those protocols requires AAC; HLS has separate listed codecs.
- Missing audio: Check that the selected audio source is active and that audio is reaching the outgoing stream.
- Multiple audio streams: Inspect the encoder or production output for additional audio tracks and address the stream-count warning it reports.
- Warning returns during the show: Check Live Control Room’s current warning and stream health rather than repeatedly changing settings without identifying the reported issue.
