Use YouTube Studio to monitor a live stream as it happens, then compare its discovery, audience size, viewing depth, and participation after it ends. No single number explains performance: a peak concurrent-viewer count, for example, is most useful alongside watch time, average view duration, and traffic sources.
Where to find YouTube Live analytics
During a stream
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, monitor stream status and real-time audience signals. For encoder streams, the documented metrics include concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, and average view duration. Mobile interfaces may show a different set. Treat status and stream health as production diagnostics; audience metrics describe how viewers are responding.

After a stream
- On desktop, sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content, then select Live.
- Select the stream you want to review and open Analytics.
- Use the relevant report or, when available, open Advanced Mode to compare or export data.
The post-stream snapshot may include views, subscribers gained during the stream, total watch time, peak concurrent viewers, duration, average view duration, and reactions. Video-level Analytics can also offer audience retention, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, devices, peak concurrent viewers, and chat messages. Which metrics appear depends on the report, filters, device, and interface. You can filter content as Live, On demand, or Live & on demand; Studio’s layout and options can change.

Think of performance as a viewer journey: appeal, engagement, then satisfaction. These are diagnostic stages, not proof that a particular metric caused a viewer’s behavior.

A practical workflow to improve the next stream
- Choose a comparable baseline. Select prior streams with similar topics, formats, promotion, and duration. Avoid treating a change as meaningful if the comparison also changes several other conditions.
- Check discovery and packaging. Review impressions, CTR, and traffic sources. If impressions are present but CTR is comparatively weaker than your own relevant streams, test a clearer title or thumbnail promise.
- Check reach and starts. Review views and “How viewers find your live streams.” Note whether changes in browse, search, suggested, or other sources coincide with the result.
- Check viewing depth. Compare average view duration, watch time, and retention. Investigate where viewing changes against the stream’s agenda or transitions, then choose one adjustment to test.
- Check audience shape and chat together. Put peak and average concurrent viewers beside chat activity and viewing-depth measures. A busy chat is not a substitute for evidence that people stayed to watch.
- Record one change for the next comparison. Note the topic, format, start time, duration, and the single change you are evaluating. Use consistent filters and date ranges; Advanced Mode can help compare or export where available. This is a practical testing method, not a YouTube-mandated protocol.
A compact tracking sheet can use four groups: discovery (impressions, CTR, traffic source), audience (peak and average concurrent viewers), depth (watch time, average view duration, retention), and participation (chat messages or chat rate). Keep duration and format visible so you do not mistake unlike streams for a fair comparison.
When reports appear, and why numbers can differ
YouTube says live-stream metrics can appear in Analytics within minutes after a stream ends and can be downloaded as CSV. Live Control Room and YouTube Analytics are not interchangeable readings: Analytics data is based on Video ID, is processed and despammed, and measures different information. Treat the live display as an in-progress view and Analytics as a separate post-stream report.

YouTube does not establish a universal “good” CTR, concurrent audience, or watch-time target in the cited metric guidance. Compare with your own relevant channel history rather than applying a made-up industry threshold. Some audience details, such as geography, traffic sources, or gender, may be limited, and not every report or breakdown is available to every creator.
How to isolate vertical-stream analytics in a dual-format broadcast

- In Studio, select the ended stream and open Analytics.
- Open Advanced Mode.
- Choose Playback location as the breakdown.
- Select a period longer than the first 24 hours.
- Select Vertical live feed.
