YouTube Live 1080p Settings for Prerecorded Streams: Bitrate, Resolution and Keyframes

For a prerecorded program sent as a YouTube Live broadcast, set 1080p bitrate by codec and frame rate, use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and keep live-ingestion settings separate from ordinary upload settings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you’re playing a prerecorded video through an encoder as a YouTube Live broadcast, set the stream to 1080p and choose its bitrate by codec and frame rate: YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for H.264 at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 60 fps. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where available. These are live-ingestion settings—not the settings for uploading a regular YouTube video.

Recommended YouTube Live bitrate for 1080p

YouTube’s live bitrate recommendations depend on the codec and frame rate, not resolution alone. The figures below are for the video bitrate YouTube receives when a prerecorded program is sent as a live broadcast.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Live input Codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

Use the recommended value if your connection and encoder can sustain it. A minimum is a lower bound in YouTube’s table, not a quality target; operating at minimum may leave less room for fast motion or complex scenes. YouTube’s recommended bitrate ranges are keyed to the codec, ingestion resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s live encoder settings also advise testing with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast and watching stream health while live.

Match the stream to the prerecorded source

Resolution and frame rate

Set the encoder’s output to 1920 × 1080 and, when practical, use the source video’s frame rate. A 30 fps source generally belongs on a 1080p30 output; a 60 fps source can use 1080p60 if the encoder and connection can sustain the higher recommended bitrate. This is practical guidance based on YouTube’s ingestion table; YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate table just for prerecorded programs.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.

Sending a lower-frame-rate source at 60 fps does not restore motion detail that was never recorded. Conversely, lowering a 60 fps source to 30 fps reduces the temporal smoothness viewers receive. Choose the output that fits the material rather than selecting 60 fps solely because it is available.

Video codec and rate control

YouTube’s general live encoder guidance accepts H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video and recommends CBR (constant bitrate). Select the bitrate from the matching row in the table above. Encoder and platform support can vary, so use a codec your encoder can produce and your chosen ingest workflow accepts; H.264 is a widely supported option.

  • Color: For SDR, use Rec. 709.
  • Transport: Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s encrypted extension to RTMP, when your encoder offers it.

These are YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS encoder recommendations. Confirm the encoder’s labels and available options in its own interface; settings names and locations differ by software or hardware.

Leave enough upload bandwidth

Your internet connection must carry the entire outgoing stream, not just its video track. Add audio and any backup feed to the total, then allow at least 20% headroom above that total. YouTube advises that outgoing bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends this margin. For example, a 14 Mbps video stream plus audio needs more capacity than 14 Mbps; do not treat the video figure alone as the connection target.

  • Test upload capacity in advance, preferably under the same network conditions you expect during the broadcast.
  • Use a reliable connection and avoid saturating it with other uploads or traffic during the stream.
  • Run a test with comparable movement and audio, then check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages.

A speed test is only a snapshot; fluctuations, competing traffic, and network quality can still affect a live feed. If the stream reports instability, reduce other network use first. If needed, lower the output bitrate while staying at or above YouTube’s minimum for the selected codec and frame rate.

Live broadcast versus ordinary video upload

“Pre-recorded stream” can mean either playing a finished program out through an encoder as a live broadcast or uploading that file as a standard YouTube video. The bitrate recommendations differ because the first is live ingestion and the second is file encoding.

Workflow 1080p recommendation What the figure applies to
Send prerecorded video as a YouTube Live broadcast Use the live table above: choose by codec and 30/60 fps. The incoming live stream bitrate.
Upload an SDR video as a regular YouTube video 8 Mbps at 24, 25, or 30 fps; 12 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps. The uploaded video file’s encoding, not live ingestion.

For regular uploads, consult YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations. Do not substitute those upload values for a live broadcast’s ingest bitrate.

Set up and test the live feed

  1. Choose the workflow. Use live ingestion if viewers should see the prerecorded program as a live broadcast. An ordinary upload uses the separate file-encoding recommendations above.
  2. Configure the YouTube live event. Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and obtain the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. Interface labels may change, so follow the current controls shown in YouTube Studio.
  3. Enter the destination in your encoder. Select RTMPS if available, then enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming destination fields.
  4. Set the output. Choose 1920 × 1080, match the source frame rate where possible, select a supported codec, and use the corresponding recommended bitrate from the table. Set CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, suitable audio, and Rec. 709 for SDR.
  5. Test before the broadcast. Use footage with movement and audio comparable to the program. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, inspect stream health and messages, and check that audio and picture remain in sync.
  6. Start the event deliberately. Starting encoder transmission and making the event public are distinct actions in many workflows. Confirm the event’s visibility and start controls in YouTube Studio before relying on viewers being able to watch.

YouTube’s encoder overview describes software and standalone hardware encoders as options; dedicated hardware is useful for productions requiring external audio/video equipment or a more advanced setup, not a universal 1080p requirement.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for prerecorded programs

Using a prerecorded file does not exempt a live broadcast from YouTube’s rules. Before scheduling it, make sure you have the rights to the video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s policies on copyright and monetization. A live feed may be interrupted or restricted if it includes material you are not permitted to broadcast. YouTube may also assess a channel’s originality and reused material separately from the technical quality of its stream; meeting bitrate settings does not guarantee eligibility for monetization.

For a recurring or looping program, verify that the material is authorized for repeated broadcast and that the stream accurately represents what viewers will see. Check current YouTube guidance for your situation, since enforcement and eligibility decisions depend on the content and channel.

Troubleshooting 1080p live streams

Symptom Likely issue What to check or change
Stream health reports insufficient or unstable bitrate Available upload bandwidth is too low or fluctuating, or other traffic is competing. Check total outgoing bitrate and the 20% headroom margin; reduce competing traffic, test the connection, or lower the encoder bitrate without going below the listed minimum.
Video looks blocky during movement The bitrate may be too low for the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, or content. Use the recommended bitrate for the exact codec and frame rate, and ensure the connection can sustain it. Test with comparable motion.
YouTube reports keyframe or encoder configuration problems The keyframe interval or another output setting may not match YouTube’s guidance. Set a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds); verify codec, CBR, resolution, and frame rate.
Encoder connects but the event does not appear live The stream may be reaching the server, but the event has not been started or made available as expected. Check the selected event, its status, stream key, visibility, and the relevant start/go-live controls in YouTube Studio.
Audio is missing or out of sync Audio encoding, source routing, or the prerecorded file may be at fault. Confirm the encoder is sending AAC or MP3 audio, inspect the audio input/routing, and test playback and synchronization before the event.
Transmission stops unexpectedly The connection, encoder, or YouTube ingest session may have dropped. Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube’s stream messages, restore the feed, and confirm whether the event needs to be restarted in Studio.
