YouTube ‘Like’ button bug makes it disappear

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the YouTube Like button disappears, it’s usually a UI rendering issue caused by cached site data, blocked scripts/extensions, a corrupted app session, or—less often—an account or eligibility constraint.

This guide walks through the fixes that consistently restore the Like button on desktop browsers, iPhone, iPad, and Android, with exact steps and the order that prevents you from wasting time.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

No matter your device, start with the fast checks first—some “bugs” are just a temporary state caused by login/session or an ad blocker interfering with YouTube’s UI.

What the YouTube Like button bug looks like (and why it happens)

The symptoms tend to look the same across platforms: the Like (thumbs-up) control vanishes from the row under the video, and you may also notice the subscriber/interaction area looks slightly “off” (missing icons, truncated button row, or delayed UI).

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Most causes fall into four buckets:

  • Stale or corrupted cache/cookies (site state loads incorrectly, so UI elements never render).
  • Blocked scripts from extensions, ad blockers, privacy tools, or “reader mode” tweaks.
  • App session glitches (YouTube app keeps a bad session state until you force-close/restart or reinstall).
  • Eligibility/account restrictions (rare, but possible with restricted mode, age/content gating, or sign-in state).

Before you change anything: fast checks that rule out common causes

Before you clear anything, do these quick checks. They’re fast, and they often fix the problem without deeper troubleshooting.

  1. Refresh the page (desktop) or fully close the app (mobile) and reopen YouTube.
  2. Confirm you’re signed in to the channel where you expect to like videos.
  3. Switch network (Wi‑Fi ↔ mobile data). A broken captive portal or DNS filtering can affect embedded scripts.
  4. Try a different video (same channel and also another channel). If the Like button is missing everywhere, it’s local to your app/browser. If it’s only one video, it’s likely that video’s page state.
  5. Check Incognito/Private mode on desktop. If the Like button returns in Private mode, cache/extensions are the culprit.

Fixes on desktop browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari)

On desktop, the fastest route is usually clearing cookies/site data for youtube.com and removing any extension that injects scripts into YouTube pages.

Clear cookies and cache for youtube.com

This targets the exact storage YouTube uses, rather than wiping your entire browser profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open your browser settings and go to Privacy / Privacy and security.
  2. Select Cookies and site data.
  3. Search for youtube.com and delete its cookies and site data.
  4. Optionally clear Cached images and files for that site if your browser offers site-scoped cache controls.
  5. Close and reopen the browser, then sign in to YouTube again and reload the video page.

Disable ad blockers and content scripts

If your extension blocks trackers or “unnecessary scripts,” it can accidentally block UI elements tied to the Like control.

  1. Open the extension menu (e.g., AdBlock/UBlock/Privacy Badger controls) and pause it for YouTube.
  2. Reload the video and check whether the Like button reappears.
  3. If you use multiple extensions, disable them one at a time until the Like button returns.
  4. Also check custom scripts like “enhanced YouTube UI” or “dark theme” extensions—some inject CSS/JS that can break the action bar.

Try a clean browser profile (no extensions)

If you don’t want to guess which extension is interfering, test with a known-clean environment.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  1. Create a new browser profile (Chrome/Edge) or use a dedicated browser (Firefox vs Chrome).
  2. Make sure extensions are off.
  3. Go to YouTube and open the same video.
  4. If the Like button is back, re-enable extensions gradually in your main profile until it breaks again.

Update the browser and restart

UI rendering bugs sometimes correlate with outdated engines and broken updates.

  1. Update your browser to the latest stable build (for example, Chrome/Edge are typically updated monthly).
  2. Restart the browser completely (close all windows/tabs and reopen).
  3. Reload the YouTube video page and test the Like button again.

Fixes on iPhone and iPad (iOS / iPadOS)

On iOS/iPadOS, the YouTube app relies on a WebView/UI layer that can get stuck. Force-closing and session resets are often enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Force-close and relaunch the YouTube app

  1. Swipe up from the bottom (or double-press Home on older devices) to open the app switcher.
  2. Swipe the YouTube app away to force-close it.
  3. Wait 10 seconds, reopen YouTube, sign in if prompted, and open the same video.

Update iOS and the YouTube app

  1. Open App Store → search for YouTube → update.
  2. Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install any available iOS/iPadOS updates.
  3. After updating, restart the iPhone/iPad once, then retest the Like button.

Log out/in or sign out of the YouTube channel

  1. Open YouTube → tap your profile icon (top right or in the menu).
  2. Select Sign out.
  3. Close the app via the app switcher.
  4. Reopen YouTube → sign back in → open the same video.

Reinstall the YouTube app (last resort)

If the UI is consistently broken on multiple videos, reinstalling can clear the corrupted local state.

  1. Hold the YouTube icon → Remove App.
  2. Reinstall from the App Store.
  3. Sign in and test again.

Fixes on Android

Android issues often come from the app cache, a broken app session, or a WebView component mismatch.

Force-stop and clear YouTube app cache

  1. Open Settings → Apps (or App management).
  2. Find and open YouTube.
  3. Select Force stop.
  4. Select Storage → Clear cache (not clear data yet).
  5. Reopen YouTube and test the Like button.

Check for system WebView / Chrome issues

YouTube’s in-app UI uses rendering components that can break after system updates.

Update the YouTube app and restart

  1. Open Play Store → YouTube → update.
  2. Restart Android.
  3. Open YouTube and reload the problematic video.

Reinstall the app if UI stays broken

  1. Uninstall YouTube.
  2. Reinstall from Play Store.
  3. Sign in and test again.

Account, video, and eligibility gotchas

Most disappearing Like-button cases are local to your device, but there are eligibility conditions worth checking—especially if the bug appears only on some videos.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restricted mode and signed-in state

  1. Confirm you’re signed in on YouTube.
  2. On Family/managed devices, check whether Restricted Mode is enabled (or ask the device owner/admin to check).
  3. Try liking a different video while signed into the same account.

Age/content restrictions and gated viewing

Some videos can show different UI when content is age-gated or region-affected. If the Like button is missing only for certain videos, test a widely available public video from another creator.

Temporary UI degradation (session state)

If YouTube partially loads (video loads, but actions don’t), session state is often the cause. Log out, clear cookies/site data, or force-stop/relaunch—those actions reset the UI layer.

Workarounds when the Like button won’t return

While you troubleshoot, these options help you verify whether liking is possible at all and whether the issue is UI-only.

Try a keyboard/UI interaction path (desktop)

On desktop, sometimes the control exists but is hidden by layout glitches. Try resizing the window (make it narrower/wider) and reload the player.

FAQ: YouTube Like button bug makes it disappear

Why did the Like button disappear all of a sudden?

Usually it’s a UI state issue triggered by stale cookies, a blocked script from an extension, or a corrupted session in the YouTube app. Refreshing/restarting and clearing youtube.com site data often fixes it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does YouTube ever remove the Like button permanently?

YouTube can change the UI layout for specific audiences or roll out temporary interface variations. If the Like button comes back on another device or in Private mode, it’s almost always a local rendering issue.

Will clearing cache or cookies delete my subscriptions?

Clearing site cookies typically doesn’t delete your channel subscriptions, but it can log you out. You can sign back in to restore everything tied to your account.

What should I do if the Like button is missing only on one video?

Try a different video from the same channel and another creator. If only one video is affected, check age/content restrictions and verify you’re signed in.

Can network filtering or VPNs cause the Like button to disappear?

Yes. DNS filtering, VPNs, and captive portals can interfere with YouTube’s scripts and UI rendering. Test with a different network and disable VPN temporarily to confirm.

Bottom Line

When the YouTube Like button bug makes the Like button disappear, the fastest reliable path is: restart/force-close, then clear youtube.com cookies/site data (desktop) or clear app cache/reinstall (mobile), and disable extensions that may block YouTube scripts.

If it still doesn’t return, use Private/Incognito and cross-device testing to determine whether the issue is local to your browser/app or tied to account/video gating.
