Quick Triage: Identify What Is Failing
Before changing anything, spend 30 seconds figuring out the symptom. “Not working” can mean different things, and the right fix depends on where it breaks.

Also check whether the issue affects one device or all devices on the same network. That single detail often tells you if the cause is local (your device/app) or external (network/service outage).
8 Easy Ways to Fix YouTube Kids Not Working
Start with the first option below. Each step is designed to be quick, low-risk, and effective.
1) Check if YouTube Kids is down
If the service is having a problem, no amount of troubleshooting will help. Check a status site (or social feeds) for reports of YouTube or YouTube Kids outages.
If others are reporting failures around the same time, wait it out and try again after 15–30 minutes.
2) Force-close and relaunch the app
Apps get stuck when background sessions hang or resources fail to initialize. Close the app completely, then reopen it.
iPhone/iPad: swipe up from the bottom (or double-click Home), find YouTube Kids, swipe it away, then launch again.
3) Confirm your device date/time and restart
Incorrect time settings can break authentication and content loading. Make sure date/time is set automatically, then reboot the device.

iOS path: Settings → General → Date & Time → turn on Set Automatically. Then restart.
4) Switch networks (Wi‑Fi ↔ mobile) and disable VPN/DNS filters
Network issues are a top cause of “videos won’t load.” Test on a different connection to isolate the problem.
Try one of these quick changes:
- Switch from Wi‑Fi to mobile data (or vice versa).
- Temporarily turn off VPN apps.
- Disable custom DNS/ad-blocking services (often set on routers or via apps).
5) Update YouTube Kids and your operating system
An older app build can stop working after backend changes. Update the YouTube Kids app first, then update the OS if updates are pending.
iOS: App Store → search YouTube Kids → Update. Android: Play Store → YouTube Kids → Update.
6) Clear cache/data (Android) or offload/reinstall (iOS)
If the app’s stored data is corrupted, clearing it often resolves endless spinners, black screens, or repeated loading.
Android: Settings → Apps → YouTube Kids → Storage → Clear cache (try first). If still broken, use Clear data next.
iOS: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → YouTube Kids → Offload App (or Delete App) → reinstall from the App Store.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
7) Recheck parental controls, profiles, and permissions
YouTube Kids behavior depends on the child profile and parent settings. If a profile was removed or rules changed, the child may see an empty home screen or unexpected blocks.

- The child profile still exists.
- Content settings match what you expect.
- There are no recent changes to profile age/content filters.
8) Remove blockers: storage limits, battery saver, and content restrictions
Even with the right app and network, device limits can break playback. Check storage and background restrictions.
Look for these common blockers:
- Low storage on the device (apps may fail to cache video).
- Battery Saver / Low Power Mode (can restrict background activity).
- Device-level content restrictions (Screen Time, Digital Wellbeing, “restricted mode” equivalents).
Device-Specific Fixes
If the generic steps above didn’t solve it, these platform-specific moves target the most common failure points for each device type.
iPhone and iPad (iOS)
On iOS, the fastest “works most of the time” sequence is: confirm time, update YouTube Kids, then offload/reinstall if it still won’t load.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Settings → General → Date & Time → enable Set Automatically.
- Update YouTube Kids in the App Store.
- Update iOS if prompted (Settings → General → Software Update).
- Force-close YouTube Kids and relaunch.
- Settings → General → iPhone Storage → YouTube Kids → Offload App → reinstall.
Android phones and tablets
On Android, cache corruption and OS background restrictions are common. Clear cache first, then escalate to clear data.
- Settings → Apps → YouTube Kids → Force stop (then reopen).
- Settings → Apps → YouTube Kids → Storage → Clear cache.
- If it still fails: Clear data (you may need to set up profiles again).
- Update YouTube Kids and Android system updates if available.
- Disable battery optimization for the app if your phone aggressively restricts background activity.
Amazon Fire tablets and Fire TV
Fire devices can struggle with app updates, storage limits, or network settings inherited from child profiles and parental controls.

Smart TVs and browsers
Many users assume YouTube Kids works identically everywhere. On TVs and certain browsers, you may be limited by app versions and device OS compatibility.
- Update the TV’s system software (Settings → Support/About/Software Update).
- Update the YouTube Kids app if your TV has it, or update the YouTube app if that’s what’s installed.
- Restart the TV and router.
- Disable VPN/DNS filters and retest.
- Try the same network on a phone to confirm it isn’t purely a network problem.
When the Usual Fixes Don’t Work
If YouTube Kids is still failing after the 8 easy fixes, you’ll need to narrow down whether it’s a specific profile, a content restriction rule, or a persistent network/auth issue.
Work through an error-code style checklist
Even without an official error code, symptoms behave like patterns. Try matching what you see to the most likely cause:
- Spinning/buffering forever: network filtering, DNS issues, or outdated app build.
- Crash on launch: corrupted install; reinstall is usually the fastest fix.
- Home screen empty: profile/content rules or permissions blocked by device restrictions.
- Only one child profile broken: profile settings mismatch or corrupted profile data; try recreating the profile.
Try a fresh profile and re-auth the parent
When profile data gets inconsistent, switching profiles can “prove” whether it’s local to one child account. If the issue is isolated, create a new child profile and test again.
For parent-managed setups, confirm you’re signed into the correct parent/household and that the profile is active.
Report the issue with logs/screenshots
If you need support, gather evidence: device model, OS version, app version, time of failure, and a screenshot of the error screen (if any). That speeds up diagnosis.

Common Mistakes That Make It Worse
- Changing multiple settings at once: you lose the ability to tell what fixed it.
- Skipping OS/app updates: YouTube Kids can require backend-compatible app builds.
- Clearing data everywhere: on iOS, “reinstall” is typically enough; on Android, clear data is the last resort because it can reset settings.
- Ignoring storage: low free space can prevent downloads and caching, causing perpetual loading.
Comparison: Clear Cache vs Clear Data vs Reinstall
These three actions are related but not interchangeable. Here’s what each typically changes.
| Action | What it affects | Best for | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear cache | Temporary files and cached media | Endless spinners, playback stutters | Low |
| Clear data | App settings, local profile data, stored state | Persistent crashes or repeat “something went wrong” | Medium to high (may require re-setup) |
| Reinstall / Offload & reinstall | Entire app install package and local app state | Broken installs or major failures after updates | Medium (re-download app, may reset state) |
FAQs
Why does YouTube Kids keep saying videos can’t play?
The most common causes are network filtering (DNS/VPN), outdated app versions, or corrupted app cache. Try switching networks and then update the app; if it persists, clear cache (Android) or offload/reinstall (iOS).
Does YouTube Kids work offline?
YouTube Kids generally requires an internet connection for streaming. If your device shows offline errors, confirm Wi‑Fi/mobile data is working and try another network.
Will clearing cache or data delete my child profile?
Clearing cache usually won’t delete profiles, but clearing data can reset local app state. If you’re on Android, consider clearing cache first; on iOS, offloading/reinstalling is typically safer than full manual data deletion, but it can still require re-auth or profile refresh depending on setup.
My child’s profile is missing or content is blocked—what should I check?
Use the parent PIN screen to verify the child profile exists and check content settings. Also confirm device-level restrictions (like Screen Time on iPhone/iPad) aren’t overriding app behavior.
Is this a problem with the app or my network?
If YouTube Kids fails on multiple devices on the same network, it’s likely network-related. If it only fails on one device, it’s more likely app state, OS settings, or storage.
Bottom Line
When YouTube Kids is not working, don’t start with complicated changes. Begin with quick triage (is it down, does only one device fail), then work through the 8 easy fixes: app relaunch, correct time, network test, updates, and targeted cache/data resets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
