The rollout was planned for iOS and Android over the following weeks, so “will receive” is no longer current wording. The change refreshed the app’s look and home-screen categories; YouTube said it did not change the app’s content, parental controls, or safety features. The announcement did not cover the YouTube Kids website or TV experience.
What changed in the YouTube Kids app?
YouTube described the update as a visual refresh, not a complete rebuild. It introduced new colors and icons and a cleaner, smoother-looking mobile interface. The home screen’s category controls also received a new presentation, helping users browse topics such as learning, gaming, and music. YouTube’s December 2024 announcement did not report usability-test results or measured performance gains, so easier discovery is a possible benefit, not a demonstrated outcome.
Some families may find familiar controls or navigation less obvious after a layout change. Feedback on the announcement included complaints that parts of the new layout were less intuitive for younger children, including concerns about text-based queues and fewer visual cues. That is user feedback, not evidence that every family encountered the same problem.
Which devices were included?
The announced redesign applied to the YouTube Kids mobile app on iOS and Android. YouTube explicitly said the web and TV experiences would not change as part of that update.

That distinction matters in households using more than one screen: the same service can look and navigate differently on a phone, browser, or television. The announcement did not say that a mobile redesign would also change a Chromecast-connected display or another TV interface.
Did the redesign change parental controls or safety?
YouTube said the existing content, parental controls, and safety features would remain. Its YouTube Kids product page lists controls that include parent-approved content and collections, age-based content levels, a timer, and video blocking. The mobile redesign announcement did not describe adding or removing those controls.

A new appearance is not a safety upgrade, and it does not mean every video has been newly reviewed. YouTube says it uses automated filters, human review, and parent feedback to help make content family-friendly, while acknowledging that no filtering system is perfect. Parents can continue using content settings, blocking and reporting tools, and supervision; YouTube’s 2017 announcement about kid profiles also recognized the limits of filtering and encouraged parents to flag content they considered unsuitable.
Why might a family see a different design?
YouTube said the redesign would roll out over the weeks after its December 10, 2024 announcement; it did not provide a current device-by-device rollout tracker or a complete changelog for every later app version. The announcement therefore confirms the planned mobile rollout, but does not establish that every account worldwide currently has an identical interface. App version, device, profile, regional availability, and staged or account-level rollout may all contribute to differences.

- You are using a browser or TV app: those experiences were outside the announced mobile redesign.
- The app may be outdated: check for a YouTube Kids update in the Apple App Store or Google Play, then close and reopen the app.
- You use child profiles: confirm the intended child profile is active; the home screen can vary with the child’s profile and age-based experience.
- The interface still differs: YouTube did not publish a universal troubleshooting path or a current rollout checker, so a difference alone does not establish that something is broken.
What should parents review after an app update?
The redesign was not announced as a change to parental settings, but it is sensible to confirm that the child is using the intended profile and that the family’s existing settings still match its needs.
- Check the child’s age-based content level.
- Review any parent-approved content or collections.
- Confirm blocked videos and timer settings are as intended.
- Check that viewing is happening in the intended app and on the expected device, particularly on a shared TV.
These are checks of existing controls, not new settings introduced by the visual refresh.

How is this different from YouTube Kids’ 2017 interface update?
In November 2017, YouTube announced kid profiles and age-tailored designs: younger children were shown less text, while older children could see more content on home screens. That was a separate feature from the 2024 visual refresh, which focused on the mobile app’s appearance and category presentation. YouTube’s 2025 account of YouTube Kids’ history also distinguishes the dedicated app from supervised experiences on the main YouTube platform. A supervised YouTube account is an alternative family setting, not the same product as the YouTube Kids app.
