WhatsApp’s Live Photos support is real, but the “beta” headline is outdated. Meta announced on September 29, 2025 that WhatsApp users could share Live Photos on iOS with movement and sound. The earlier beta test explains the old reports; it is no longer accurate to describe the capability as beta-only. Playback can still vary by device, app version and platform.
What WhatsApp Live Photos support does
An Apple Live Photo combines a still image with a short motion segment captured around the shutter press. That segment can include sound, so it is not simply a GIF or a conventional video.
Previously, sending one through WhatsApp could flatten it into an ordinary still image, or you had to export it as a video or GIF first. Native support lets WhatsApp share the richer capture more directly. Meta describes the feature as sharing Live Photos on iOS with “sound and movement.” Meta’s announcement does not claim that every recipient or device will reproduce the experience identically.
Is the feature still in beta?
From testing to an official announcement
- Earlier reporting described Live Photos as an iOS beta feature available to selected testers.
- On September 29, 2025, Meta officially announced Live Photos sharing on iOS, alongside Motion Photos support on Android.
- As of August 18, 2026, the best-supported description is an officially announced WhatsApp capability, not a beta-only experiment.
A third-party report still presents the feature as limited to beta testers, but that conclusion predates or conflicts with Meta’s later announcement. See the historical beta coverage at Position Is Everything.

Meta has not published a universal WhatsApp version cutoff, minimum iOS release, or rollout schedule in that announcement. A feature can therefore appear at different times on different accounts or builds.
How to send a Live Photo from an iPhone
The expected workflow uses WhatsApp’s normal media picker. Labels can differ slightly between app builds.

- Open the WhatsApp chat where you want to share the image.
- Tap the attachment or media button beside the message field.
- Open your Photos library.
- Select a Live Photo rather than an ordinary still image.
- Review the preview, add a caption if desired, and tap Send.
This path is described in earlier reporting at Position Is Everything. The official announcement confirms the capability but does not promise a permanently fixed button name or a dedicated Live Photo badge.
What the recipient sees
Compatible iPhone clients
On a compatible iPhone running a WhatsApp build that supports the format, the message should appear as photo-like media with access to the captured motion. Playback controls or gestures may not match Apple Photos exactly.

Older or unsupported clients
An older or otherwise unsupported client may show only the still frame, fail to animate the media, or present another fallback representation. There is no documented universal fallback rule covering every WhatsApp release.
Android, web and desktop
Apple Live Photos are captured natively on iPhone. Meta separately announced Motion Photos for Android, but that is a related format rather than proof that Android reproduces every Apple Live Photo feature. An Android recipient may receive the media while seeing a different presentation, such as a still or converted clip. Web, desktop, group-chat, forwarding and saving behavior can likewise differ by current client and processing path.

For an important message, send a test to the actual recipient or choose a format with more predictable compatibility.

A Live Photo sits between a still and a deliberate video: it adds context without requiring you to record and edit a longer clip.

Limitations and privacy checks
Preview more than the key frame
The seconds around the shutter press can contain nearby conversation, people entering the frame or other activity that is absent from the still image. Play the motion and listen to the audio before sending. If you intend to share only one frame, send a standard photo.
Do not assume original-format preservation
WhatsApp may process media during sending, forwarding, saving or export. The available announcement does not establish original-quality preservation, identical audio retention in every workflow, or a universal behavior for backups and restores.
Choose the format for the recipient
- Use a Live Photo when the brief movement adds useful context and the recipient is likely to use a compatible iPhone and current WhatsApp version.
- Use a still when compatibility, speed or a predictable single frame matters most.
- Export or record a video when the moment is longer, needs editing or must work on services that do not recognize Live Photos.
If a Live Photo does not animate
- Confirm that the sender selected a Live Photo from the iPhone Photos library, not an exported still.
- Update WhatsApp on the sender and recipient devices through their respective app stores.
- Try a direct one-to-one chat on a current iPhone before testing forwarding, desktop or web viewing.
- If motion or sound is still unavailable, resend the still image for reliability or export the Live Photo as a conventional video.
These steps cannot guarantee identical playback across platforms because Meta has not documented a single compatibility rule for every client.
Bottom line
WhatsApp Live Photos support began as an iOS beta test but was officially announced by Meta in September 2025. iPhone users can use the regular media picker to share the short movement and sound captured with a Live Photo. Treat cross-platform playback as version-dependent, preview for unintended audio or motion, and send a still or video when compatibility and control matter more than preserving the Live Photo format.
